Commercial was very niche. I feel like they are missing the segment of smartphone consumers who are potential GS4 customers but don't necessarily care about all those features.

This part of the ad was a bit over the top, could have cut it out to make the ad shorter.

I don't get it (not trying to be mean) but if you want to share a picture do you go up to each person and S-Beam it to them individually? What if they don't have a GS4 or are unavailable? Do you wait to share?

I only ask b/c due to social networking and other factors, people are taking billions of pictures a day, can you imagine everyone S-Beaming everything to each other?

The worst part is iPhones have more pictures taken with them than any other device so most pictures can't be bumped. (Frowny Face)

That phone looks pretty neat. If the iPhone 5S doesn't wow me I'll switch to that.
(currently running a 4S)
I'm not big on mobile games, I've got a 3DS and Vita for those, so the amount of apps doesn't really interest me. So long that the core experience is good, I'm good.

NFC does it without network. how do you not understand that. the IR inthe s4 controls the tvwithout network or needing a smart tv. also please name one killer thing ios has that android doesn't. don't just say ios

Yeah so it is great when you are mountain climbing and want to bump with your climbing buddy but when you bump his phone you knock him loose from his hold and he falls to his death.

Yes. Reminds me of those "I'm a Mac" ads.

Again that was making fun of PCs in general and not a particular company like say Dell... Okay they also poked fun at Windows but on the other hand promoted the use of Office on Mac.

Add a 32 gig SD card for $20. Problem solved.

Not really as apps can only be saved to the internal storage, not the SD card.

According to all reports.

The worst part is iPhones have more pictures taken with them than any other device so most pictures can't be bumped. (Frowny Face)

I really don't see the point of this for most users who are unlikely to share THEIR photos, just set it to upload to the cloud for all to see.

My guess is the next iPhone update in the 2nd half of the year will include the latest CPU, WiFi and BT. More RAM (if needed) and maybe bigger storage, I do hope NFC is included and better cameras. I don't see a change in screen size until the 6 next year.

One of the advantages apple has is they can advertise apps and os features. Samsung is stuck with hardware and tack on software only.

http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/24/4257254/samsung-galaxy-s4-review:

"I don't like holding this phone, and I can't overstate how much that informs the experience of using it. It makes an awful first impression, slippery and slimy and simply unpleasant in your hand. My white review unit is completely smooth and glossy, with a subtle checkered pattern that looks textured but is neither grippy nor textured anywhere on its body. Even the silver band around the sides, which is obviously supposed to look like metal, is plastic. Everyone I showed the GS4 to frowned and wrinkled their nose as if it smelled bad, before rubbing their fingers on the back of the phone and then handing it back to me"

"The HTC One is a powerful, feature-rich device that is also beautiful and classy, while Samsung's handset feels like an overpowered children’s toy."

Ok the verge is just about the most bias site there is. Also thats nothing but one persons opinion of the feel of the device. How it feels to one does not make for a bad review. Ive seen many a video with people seeing the S4(videos not made by samsung btw) for the first time with glowing reviews. If you liked the S3 then you will like the S4. If you didnt then they wont. That does not make it a bad phone and I wouldnt call that being unkind. Also its funny how you left out all the positives inbetween those 2 quotes. Also again they give a low to design because its plastic. Plastic is no cheaper then aluminum and in many cases stands the test of time better.

The App Store with over 700000 apps fir anything

The play store with out 500,000 apps for anything

Because Samsung can't advertise Apps? or perhaps they just choose not to.

Samsung isn't stuck with anything.

Yeah so it is great when you are mountain climbing and want to bump with your climbing buddy but when you bump his phone you knock him loose from his hold and he falls to his death.

That's like the time I dropped my all glass iPhone 4, and the shards flew around nicking the carotid artery of a school bus driver, causing her to lift her hands up off the wheel to grab her neck in a vain attempt to stop the bleeding, which caused the bus to careen out of control and drive off the side of a cliff, killing everyone on board.

...cept for 'lil Billy, who now suffers from PTSD.

Wow...so I'm supposed to be impressed by being able to answer my phone by waving my hand over it or a text the same way (which is basically just a software thing that can be added in a day by Apple if they wanted via the sensor).

That's all Samsung has?

Bumping phones...never impressed me. The remote? Already have it via an 'app'

Yeah - this happens all the time.

How about a more likely scenario. You're somewhere where there's no signal and/or wifi. Like a subway station. Or several blocks in Manhattan for example where both wifi and 4G (or any signal) are unable to penetrate the layers of concrete and steel.

Or how about those that simply don't want to eat away at their data plan.

I do love how those who don't have a feature try to insist how useless it is to make themselves feel better. Well my phone doesn't have it - so I don't need it. Great for you.

Takes too long for people to adopt new technology (whether it is the technology or barrier to entry). This marked the first time smartphone sales passed dumbphone sales. For example, there is so much ground to be made in mobile payments. Not just NFC payments. But on the topic of NFC payments, it is pretty widespread, but people are just not adopting the technology at a fast, recognizable pace.

And on a similar note, all the augmented reality stuff Google is doing is pretty nifty too, but it'll take a long time for that to mature and for people to get on the train.

I am keeping a wary eye on google glass. When I heard a developer had made an app that takes a pic when you blink (after getting past hope it requires an extended blink) I thought this will be interesting.

Still not sure the device and utilization is where we will end up but it is an interesting direction that could cause a great upheaval in the mobile market.

Do you absolutely need that 'photo' ASAP? Can't wait till you get home to send it over WiFi? It's a nice feature (better then music bumping) but hardly game changing/defining.

----------

Does your app require wifi or data? Yeah. Thought so.

It requires WiFi...which the majority of people have in their house with a smart TV. Yeah. Thought so.

Do you absolutely NEED the 1,001 apps or functions of a smart phone? No. They are nice to have. And you never know. The one time you want or need it - it's there. Who said it was game changing or defining. They used it as a differentiator in an ad and people here are trying to say that Samsung is making fun of the iPhone or its customers. No - they just differentiated their product. Like Apple does with "retina", Siri and a slew of other things no other phone has.

And as for using wifi - yes it works. So does the IR transmitter. I hardly see how HAVING one in the phone is a silly idea. Is it a game changer - no. But it's a nice feature.

You know what else people have in their homes? TV remotes. Why use a cell phone at all? :)

----------

True but I'm pretty sure the majority of people that have Wi-Fi don't necessarily have a Smart TV.

and this too.

exactly how is the verge biased? Especially when lately they've been sucking Google's **** on a regular basis.

It's a feature that, were it on the iPhone, at least 3/4ths of the people here would be screaming about like they were an awkward teenage girl at a Beatles show in the 60's.

ohhhh maaahhh GGAAAAWWWDD! DID YOU SEE THAT? BUMP! THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING! APPLE DID IT AGAIN!

edit: though to be fair, this only would've been the case during the Steve Jobs era. These days, you're equally as likely to have someone pop up and go "this isn't revolutionary at all! The board needs to fire Tim Cook".

At what point does this advert poke fun at the iPhone as the title suggests?

I see Samsung highlighting the functionality in the S4 that the iPhone lacks - and that is not poking fun at the iPhone.

Some of the functionality of the S4 is useful , for example gestures to answer a phone call is extremely useful. As is NFC , in this case to transfer photos.

To sync with a bump on iOS install the Bump app (sync between iOS, Android AND Mac/PC — Free).

The problem is not everyone knows about them, and have them installed - so isn't automatically useful. Additionally, the bump app scales down photos.. so there are limitations. BUT who knows - the bump feature on the S4 may do the same thing. saying that, I'll probably give this a try since it also supports file transfer to the Mac as well. Thanks for sharing the link.

Suspect again (or guess again) that it works perfectly well with most TV models and with most other devices. Because the S4 uses IR to communicate.

That is one of the things that killed me when I switched to an iPhone. I was used to my old Palm devices, including my Treo, doubling as a TV remote control. I liked my 3GS for about a day and a half, until those sorts of deficiencies started to show up with increasing regularity. I'm glad to see phones are now going back to having an IR capability.

I welcome back the feature too :)
