The new gen Macs blow away the legacy Intel models. And I have (and love) the older Macs you speak of.
I think it’s the other way around, those new iMac are significantly lighter and the old Intel iMac blew a lot more air. Those old Intel iMac could blow those new iMac right off the table, and there was no way those new iMac could even budge an old Intel iMac. 😋

The M3 chip is widely expected to be fabricated using TSMC's 3nm process for performance and efficiency improvements compared to the current, 5nm-based ‌M2‌ chip, which debuted in June 2022.
Did anyone else notice this? Does this mean that the M3 will actually be built on the existing 5nm line? 😋

scary low ram and storage
They only have to address that in the 13 inch MacBook Pro update as all the rest of the MacBook Pro are already at 16Gb of ram or more. However, knowing Apple, they will only bump the 13 inch MacBook Pro to 12 Gb.

Build quality: You are dead wrong here. The 16" design is far ahead of the 2011-2015 design. My 2011 MBP had serious issues with the design leading to the screen being replaced twice due to damage on the screen from the keyboard. My 2016 MBP lasted until I got a 2021 M1 Max machine and I sold it in near-pristine condition despite never babying it. My M1 Max looks and works as brand new and will be sold as that when I replace it with an M3 Max next week.

OS: Nothing particularly wrong with Sonoma. It is not clunky and the UI is not based on the iPad in any way. Some of the helper apps now take cues from iOS (settings for example) but that is not UI. Those apps work fine and are rarely used. I take it you have not spent any significant time with the latest versions of macOS or you would know this. You admit to using an ancient system.

Timmy: Who cares. He is not the one designing the systems and likely has very limited input. He is not hands-on like Steve was. It is a loss to not have Steve in the processes but so far things have been fine.

Usability: You must be joking. My Core i9 MBP ran so hot under a light load that it would become totally unusable. Everything, and I mean everything, runs much better on the M1. This includes x86_64 apps. Apple Silicon was a long time coming and everything about it is better. Have fun with your lap warmer.
I love my M1 Max 16” MBP, which is the best laptop I’ve ever owned; however, I do believe the build quality on the new machines is lighter than the older aluminum models. The metal just feels…thin on the bottom. The old ones never felt that way and were built like tanks. That said, this has been a stellar performer so far— it just feels like they use lighter materials

By blow away, I assume you mean they're much faster which is true.

The overall build quality is complete crap. They feel like garbage to the touch, there's so many design and build flaws that you're lucky to get 3 years out of one. Compared to my 2011 which is still going. I guess that's on purpose though, a computer in use after 12 years means lost money for Apple (even if it is good for the environment).

You're forced onto the newer OSes. The current state of MacOS is horrendous, aside from all the well-discussed bugs here, they UI is clunky, it's a broken-down version of the UI designed for iPads with their touch screens and it just doesn't work on a computer.

Timmy took out an ad campaign to brag that he doesn't even know what a computer is. He famously said he doesn't even know why anyone would buy a computer. Mac has clearly been led for the past 7-8 years by someone who doesn't know what a computer is for or why anyone would buy one.

They may be the fastest macs ever made but the design and usability is utter garbage and has been since before Apple Silicon came along.
funny because the first Apple Silicon device isn’t even 3 years old.

Hmm... So Kuo is saying that Apple will release a 13-inch MacBook Pro (the one with a Touch Bar) with the basic M3 chip, but no MacBook Air will be released. How can that be? The MacBook Air is Apple's best-selling Mac, and Tim Cook prioritizes maximizing profits. So why would Apple not release a MacBook Air? Especially with the holiday shopping season starting in one month?
yeah according to the Buyer’s guide we should expect a chip update now.

It’s time to swap my 2014 MacBook Pro 15 to a m3 pro 14. 9 years old in November, so not bad timing 😃
Holy schmoly!

Just a couple of recommendations as a 16" M1 MBP user:
- To beat the notch, set your wallpaper to plain black, and use dark mode. This renders the notch invisible. Then it becomes a good thing, as you realise that instead of having a large top bezel due to the camera, you now use the space in that bezel as your menu bar.
- I found the audio to be fantastic for playing music, but for spoken voice, I find it a horrid muddy, muffled, artificially bass heavy mess. I fixed that with a 3rd party equaliser. I don't know a good one to recommend that is simply an equaliser and nothing else, as I use Audio Hijack, which has a swath of excellent functionality for routing the sound inputs and outputs of the applications, and the MBP hardware, with all kinds of filters and recording abilities. You can create a bunch of "sessions", and switch between them via the status menu bar, thus I can easily switch between the standard audio setting when playing music, or a filtered audio to reduce the bass for spoken voice. I really recommend Audio Hijack, and it is a one off price, but it is overkill if you just want an equaliser, so I'd hunt around for an alternative if that's all you want.

Apart from that, it is an epic machine, with overkill power, and a looooong battery life. When I go to work in a cafe for a few hours, I don't even bother taking my charger.

This is true. Apple Silicon Macs suck at doubling as space heaters and white noise machines. Truly a great loss.

Apple may be planning to launch new Mac models announced at its "Scary Fast" event on Wednesday, November 8, MacRumors has learned.

scary-fast-apple-event-feature.jpg

At the start of the month, MacRumors reported that Apple was proceeding with plans to announce at least one new Mac model in October. Apple yesterday announced its "Scary Fast" event for Monday, October 30, featuring a Finder hint, which virtually confirms the arrival of new Macs. Now, related information provided to MacRumors suggests that new Mac models could launch on Wednesday, November 8 – nine days after the "Scary Fast" event.

While Apple product launches often take place on a Friday, there is precedent for Apple opting for the first Wednesday in November following an October event. For example, at its "There's more in the making" event on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, Apple announced new iPad Pro models. The machines launched on Wednesday, November 7 – eight days later.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that Apple's upcoming event will focus on new MacBook Pro models with M3 series chips, which could include the 13-, 14-, and 16-inch models with the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips. In addition to these machines, a new iMac featuring the M3 chip is also on the table for announcement at the event.

The M3 chip is widely expected to be fabricated using TSMC's 3nm process for performance and efficiency improvements compared to the current, 5nm-based ‌M2‌ chip, which debuted in June 2022. It will also likely feature an all new GPU with hardware ray-tracing, first introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro's A17 Pro chip last month.

And for the typical Mac user coming from any of the previous M-series chip they are going to say I don't feel any difference in performace. Apple hit the point of diminishing returns for their typical user with the M1 chip. Now if you're doing professional level video work then you'll notice performance differences.

My current laptop 2015 MBP Retina that is the best laptop ever and it pains me to think the machine will become a backup in the drawer to never be used. M3 Max is going to be a day one upgrade so I can finally play BG3 at max settings on a 5120x1440p screen and open more than 2 tabs of Chrome.

The M3 was needed like, well, yesterday. Remember all of the rumors that we'd have the M3 in spring 2023? As I recall, I considered that kind of aggressive but IMO fall 2023 is kind of late.

No mind, however, since late is better than never. This should put Apple back in the performance race with AMD/Intel but what I really want is a Mac mini with the M3 Pro and at least 64GB of RAM. But, if I have to wait until 2024 for the latter or if they max out at only 48GB of RAM I may need to go for a Mac Studio (lucky for Apple, not so much for my bank account).

Actually, I guess a top Mac mini is about the same price as the entry-level Mac Studio so I guess I still haven't made my mind up about which to get. Quite frankly RAM capacity is about the only driving force behind upgrades today, or at least that's been my experience with both Macs and PCs.

Unfortunately, RAM price and capacity is kind of the Achilles' heel for Apple Silicon. Their memory architecture has some definite advantages, but price and maximum capacity are wanting.

But, as for the M3 it is definitely needed.
