I think the idea here is that the Airtags are a little more serious than for things you are likely to only ever to lose within the same room. The overall scale of the Find My network is large and something Apple likely worked on a lot, and so instead of reducing it to a remote-finding gimmick Apple might be redirecting attention to its larger purpose and application.

That's all great - but why could it not be used for both?

The Apple TV is such a small update and they add u1 why exactly, the iPad Pro should have as if it’s stolen you can track it down with it off

I wouldn't be surprised if that ATV refresh had been ready for a year and this is why it has no hardware consideration for the new find my features.

I don't really think it's that "new" to be honest.

AirTags were rumored to come out I want to say almost a year (maybe more) ago now.

I think perhaps Apple is respecting our time here... imagine booting up the app, syncing location of the remote then following directions to its location an arms length away when you could have just looked around under pillows and between the lounge. Technology isn’t supposed to make us lazier. If you are really accident prone then by all means attach an AirTag to your Apple TV remote, but I don’t think Apple wants you to do that.

I thought for sure it would have this. Apple usually thinks through everything, and this seems obvious when they kept it so thin that it will get lost constantly. I’ve got mine in a silicon case that makes it thicker and easier to grip and I still lose it the most out of everything I own.

Same here. The case helped quite a bit, but it still gets lost very, very easily.

"Apple is perhaps expecting ‌Apple TV‌ users to add an AirTag to the back of the ‌Siri‌ Remote, which would allow it to be tracked via the ‌Find My‌ app." Now that is pretty silly. OK if you want to, but what is wrong with putting your remote away when you are done with it? Works for me, same place all the time. Try it with all your goodies, saves a lot of time and frustration in your life.

How frequently do people lose their remotes and keys? Honestly I've never been unable to find my remote for more than about 10 seconds. It'd take longer to launch an app than the couple seconds to check around the couch, there it always is.
For me, keys and wallet are the things I misplace itermittently so I’ve been using a tile for quite a while to find them.

What tends to happen is most of the time I know where they are. However, sometimes they are inside the weird part of the couch or some other random spot and the time spent looking for them would make me late. Now I’m not late anymore so the trackers have been good for me. Maybe you don’t want to always pull up the app, but when you really need something quick, it’s there to find stuff.

Fixed it

You don't think the $60 remote price could perhaps cover the testing and certification costs?
lol
This new Apple TV won’t be a volume seller. So all that extra engineering on field testing, interference, communication etc has to go into the budget. The device already communicates with the Apple TV and over IR to supported component devices. It has a rechargeable battery. I’m sure Apple weighed the costs. Adding a tag is the simpler solution.

With all that said, I prefer using my phone. You have to be a real masochist to want to type in passwords like this is 1998.

The Apple 4K story was the most disappointing announcement here. No gaming story. No U1 in the remote? Two generation old chip? I mean, I'll still upgrade but ....eh?
two generation old chip - still faster than everyone else though and does what it is supposed to do, so do you really need a Geekbench score of 7700 to watch tv and movies?
