My Logitech Harmony remote's have cost as much as $350. Of course, the thing lasted four thirteen YEARS.
I've only recently replaced it with the Harmony Elite (still $300). Works amazing.
Obviously, I don't have to use the Apple Remote very often, so won't be getting it, unless I get a new Apple TV.
....and sadly, Logitech has officially exited the remote market. I immediately ordered another 665 from BB when I heard the news so I have a spare.

Same. I had to really talk myself into buying the Harmony Elite. That $300+ price tag was a hard pill to swallow. Along with that the rechargeable battery isn't exactly easily customer replaceable. Logitech banks that customers will just spend another $350. I chuckle at some here complaining about the Apple remote being $60.

Wait, what? When did this happen?
Who or what is going to replace them?! They're not just the standard, they're THE remote people. I suppose they're thinking people will just use their phone, similar to how they have their Harmony app. To me, it's just not the same.

This new Apple TV won’t be a volume seller. So all that extra engineering on field testing, interference, communication etc has to go into the budget. The device already communicates with the Apple TV and over IR to supported component devices. It has a rechargeable battery. I’m sure Apple weighed the costs. Adding a tag is the simpler solution.

With all that said, I prefer using my phone. You have to be a real masochist to want to type in passwords like this is 1998.
Wait, you’re serious? Good for you that your phone that works great as a remote. Most people prefer something with physical buttons. And typing in passwords? I stopped that when Apple released the first Siri remote and spoke my passwords. No need to peck at anything.

Honestly, how many people would lose the remote to justify that extra battery-sucking tech?

Remote is bigger now, too.

Non-issue.
Maybe a non-issue for you. But for many many others it absolutely is. It’s not that we don’t know where the remote ends up. We generally know it hasn’t left the room but I can’t tell you how incredibly frustrating it has been over the last several years having to search all the cushions and under every seat on the couch. A quick way to precisely find it is exactly what was needed. And Apple whiffed this one.

Wow. That’s one ugly remote. Looks really dated too. Maybe they were going for that retro vibe. If so nailed it.

ive had to buy a Apple remote before because family members lose it.
I haven’t looked at the hardware yet but if it’s close to the old 4K I’ll buy that one.
better remote on the old one.

Plus I gather the new remote you can’t game with now. So now I need a controller laying about just to play basic games?

I can’t even imagine an other option than small Apple devices with U1 chip embedded on board. iPhones, AirPods, remote and so on should be lost proof out of factory. I will never tape an air tag on my remote.

What if I don't want tape on my remote?
I've had a Tile attached to my Apple remotes as long as I've had an Apple TV (years). I don't have tape. Tiles used to come with some sticky adhesive, not unlike the 3M Command Adhesive strips. That's what I'll use to attach Apple Tags to my remote (removable Command Adhesive dots/squares).

By the way, I also put a Tile on each of my Harmony remotes.

Every Apple device that doesn't have the U1 chip (iPhone SE, iPad Pro, etc) is a missed opportunity for Apple. I have the new iPhone SE and am getting the new iPad Pro, but obviously I won't be buying AirTags (was going to but . . .).

Are you really going to lose your remote so bad that you need a $30 ultra-advanced wireless beacon to find it?

Apple never goes the extra mile. Never. Eventually they will. They’re always miles behind.

And they showed missing remotes at the bottom of the couch!
Lol, I missed that the first time. Thanks.

How frequently do people lose their remotes and keys?

Do you really need AR to help you know to look in the couch?

It's either between the cushions or under the couch. Takes less than 30 seconds to find.

I've spent hours looking for my remotes, keys not so much. Take it to my desk, kitchen or elsewhere to control things (usually music) while I'm on the computer, cooking, or doing other things. Things get moved around and remote gets covered. An hour later when I'm looking for it is it on the couch, desk, kitchen, or ...?

Apple doesn’t know the meaning of exciting updates anymore

The Apple TV calibration feature is pretty darn exciting. Professional calibrations cost 100's of dollars.

I've only recently replaced it with the Harmony Elite (still $300).

The elite price has increased almost $100 since it was discontinued. Best buy had it for $350 ($50 over original price), now its $380. There is one ebay listing for $685!

I still have a remote in my house I still cannot find. I would love for it to at least beep or play a sound for me so I could find it.
Was telling my mom about the coming color adjustment wizardry for Apple TV and she told me her remote is AWOL too. This would have been a much lived feature.

not having it feels like a kind of planned obsolescence. Apple does this thru design and feature updates.

the gesture remote is total garbage and I can't get it to synch up with my apple tv so glad they got rid of it. As far as not being able to find my remote with this new one.... wtf are you people doing with your remotes that you lose them?
