More reliable is always better. I have to believe, though, that if they're updating the UI, that we'd have seen something in a release by now. Even if it can only be turned on via some hidden preference.
The seeds of Leopard all had the Tiger UI until WWDC 07 for an October release.

I'm guessing it'll be the same, WWDC demo and new seed with new GUI, October release.

Rule is; unless you want the gamble, join the party at 10.X.5

Thats a long wait to join the party.

i cant wait for SL. I do hope they tweak the interface, i want something a bit fresh looking, nothing wrong with the current look tough.

i am holding back my macbook purchase as far as possible in hope that i can qualify for a free update.

i read that SL will be out sometime late Q2 or early Q3 '09, but i need to get a new laptop in March for uni. Do you guys think i would qualify for a free update?

BTW, i notice that for the 10.4 & 10.5, Apple released them on my bday - 29 April :)

I would say no. When leopard came out I think they started qualifying people for a free upgrade 30 days before it came out. I don't expect it to come out till after WWDC tho.

exactly what I was thinking. Though, 10.5.6 is getting there. I think 10.5.7 will be even better (as one would hope) but it's quite important to remember that. When 10.5.0 came out, people were going crazy about stability.

A lot of Tiger specific software wasn't compatible with Leopard and it cause a lot of big issues. That is one of the reasons that people claimed the Leopard launch was a disaster.

You could make the arguement that the Vista launch had the same problem due to third party drivers causing issues, but at least in the case of Leopard a fresh install without the software would work properly (it did in my case).

Snow Leopard? Is that for the Mac? I thought this was iPhoneRumors.com! Come on, it's all about the iPhone now... we don't need no stinking Macs anymore.

Hey, Arn should make an official iPhoneRumors.com with all iPhone-only rumors. That would ROCK!

Is this the one (10.6) that will make better use of multi-core machines?
If it is, I too wish they would release it.
Coming from the PC world originally, it is quite different to see this kind of release. Windows was never done that way (that I know of). But then again Windows never charged for their updates (service packs). OSX is cheaper to buy in the first place though...

Rich

Only 4 months to go now. I hope people that sell hardware products are busy updating their drivers for the new SL64 Kernel. EyeTV I am looking at you!

10.x is not a "service pack".

10.x.x are the "service packs". 10.x are new OS'.

No, 10.x.x are not service packs. The simple fact is that OS X has its own release/price structure. Trying to translate it into the way Microsoft does Windows releases is meaningless.

The article said Snow Leopard was the code name...

Isn't Snow Leopard going to be the release name?

ex.
When developing vista the code name was long horn and release name was vista..

Does anybody know what video cards will be supported for the GPU acceleration? I am doubting that my HD2400XT will be supported...
ATI's HD2xxx series already supports GPGPU functionality using their proprietary CTM framework and Brook+ language. ATI has said they are abandoning proprietary methods in favour of standards like OpenCL and DirectX 11 Compute Shaders. Technically the HD2xxx series should be OpenCL capable, it's whether Apple decides to release drivers that support it.

I've actually asked one of ATI's Steam product managers whether the RV5xx series GPUs like the X1600 and X1900 will support OpenCL. They can't confirm anything although they are focusing on recent and future GPUs first, but they would look into it. As a historical point, the X1600, X1800, and X1900 were really the first consumer use of GPGPU since the first Folding@home GPU client was made for the X1xxx series. In comparison, nVidia's 7xxx series was deemed too slow for them to release a client. I could see Apple not releasing OpenCL support for the X1600 and X1900 to avoid nVidia 7300 and 7600 owners complaining.

I just hope 10.6 fixes my mail.app issues. I will gladly pay for that fix.

Maybe you can fix it already. Don't know what your problems is , but i don't read anywere about specific bug on MAIL. Try to delete preferences files or simply fixing permissions.

Can't be any worse than 10.5.0, which thanks to the once popular Application Ehancer, caused me to lose my entire purchased iTunes library upon install.

That was a bad day I've tried very hard to repress.

Mail wont quit when I shut down. Sometimes I have to force it to quit so I can shut down. This only happens about 30% of the time. the other 70% of the time I have no problem.

I second, there are no Mail.app "bugs". There are plenty of people that cannot for the life of them configure it correctly. That's for sure.

i really hope they improve finder... something like "explorer" for windows would be nice... tabs would also work.....

I'd love to get Tiger's spotlight functionality back.
Like the categories and some more view options in the results so I can sort by file size and whatnot.

Right now, spotlight is rather clumsy and there's no way to do detailed searches.

The ONLY problem is if you try to shut down, it won't quit sometimes?

Welcome to Leopard. Random applications can cause this to happen fairly often. Not sure what it means that its Mail every time, but I've had a variety of 3rd party apps do this, especially Vuze.
