… You're referring to a different monitor SKU than what I'm referring to. The PA32UCGX launched with the same $5000 price and had the same exact HDR performance: 1000 sustained nits and 1600 nits w/ Dolby Vision HDR and HLG.

The only notable difference was 4K@120hz w/ VRR and custom colorimeter support. So it wasn't a high PPI monitor ultimately desiring more refresh rate with that premium HDR quality for animators and game professionals.

If you only meant that 1600 peak luminance is more than 1200, then just say that. I would argue that having 7x more precise local dimming (not to mention 8K versus 6K) outweighs that difference.

Yes, the ProArt 8K monitor I'm well aware of does not have full parity with the Pro Display to outclass it because of its HDR deficiencies. Nonetheless it's comparable to indeed ultimately rival it vs. equal (and succeed) it with my intended use of the word "rival".

While picture quality sharpness is indeed one of the core traits of a monitory, there's also reproducing and auditing color which for creative professionals 1000 sustained nits and higher peak nits becomes proportionally more important as the diminishing return of sharpness rises sharply after a DPR of 2 ("retina quality").

Especially when it comes to content production pipelines involving premium HDR such as Dolby Vision HDR.

So overall with that clarified, it seems we can concur it's the closest rival but for creative professionals it's an odd compromise towards not fully succeeding itbecause again the HDR quirks.

Regarding reference monitors:

Various creative professionals are actually part of the content production pipeline of premium HDR in which they don't need or have to always use the 4K references monitors (in practice they use a quick detach monitor system or multiple monitor desk with quick detach features to audit/contribute).

There's also various creative professionals who want to do professional quality work with color that don't need necessarily a reference monitor as a daily monitor they reference/audit their work on.

Then there's people who produce and create and want to consume content at professional quality and benefit from the productivity benefits of ideal monitor specs such monitors provide that reference monitors don't always provide for their functionality like the hallmark sustained nits Apple, Asus, Samsung and others provide that's yet to be consistently practical for reference monitors with the function of accuracy they need to provide.
 
…And? The Asus 8K ProArt monitor is ~$8,800. Given the unprecedented specs the Pro Display XDR will have to be an Ultra Retina XDR 32 monitor (Tandem OLED), $6500 is a more than fair price–that'll be a damn good deal.

Many have stagnated at 4K (not ideal after 24" for high pixel density) to move the price floor to $2000-$2500 for entry level ones. Usually that necessitate compromising sharpness (pixel density) and HDR for entry creative professional.

That's been the market for prosumer monitors for over 6 years with the Pro Display XDR able to justify its price accordingly after all this time.

Asus's ProArt 4K 24" OLED with Dolby Vision HDR is $3000 which by no coincidence aligns hy the Vision Pro with a prosumer screen + a laptop APU and other things is $3500.

With or without inflation/tariffs, $6500 would be fair–especially if its 6K/8K with Pro Motion and 12-bit color (possible with Thunderbolt 5's 120Gbps mode).

If Apple released a Tandem OLED 6K monitor.. well I think I would just have to buy it. Even at its utterly ridiculous price tag. I have my M4 iPad Pro and M3 Max 14” MacBook Pro and the iPad screen looks better to me. A monitor with the same screen would be stunning at 6K.

If the new Studio Display had HDMI 2.1, or accepted a converted signal from HDMI to USB-C with DP alt mode without issues, I would get one in a heartbeat. Because even with a native resolution of 5K, I would set the output of my PS5 Pro to 1440p if 4K was blurry, because 1440p is an integer scale of 5K.

But, please Apple, let us plug in more than a Mac.

Im guessing its the same 5k Mini LED that has been showing up at CES from LG and other brands. BIG IF is if there is a 32" model. Not sure if anything at CES matches that exactly.

Wow, this looks so good… the only thing that is lacking relative to the Studio Display is the glossy finish. Otherwise looks promising.

By the way, the 5K AI upscaling means that I can play my 4K PS5 Pro games and get them upscaled to that 5K native resolution? If so, as I said, it looks REALLY promising for those of us looking for a monitor for everything.

EDIT: Is it curved? On some pictures it looks slightly curved, and I’m not into curved monitors.
 
Also, just learned about the MSI MPG 271KRAW16, a 5K miniLED monitor with dual mode resolution, and yes… a glossy finish!

Its flat and the AI is supposed to upscale games to 5k.

Learn from my mistake and don’t bring up HDMI here. And I don’t even want to do what you are doing. I just want to plug my Apple Mac to an Apple display using the HDMI port because that is all I can use.


The issue isn't that HDMI isn't a valid ask but it's simply not going to happen given how Apple views the role of their monitors so its sort of pointless to put much effort into talking about it. Apple does not intend for their monitors to be used with anything besides Apple products. In other-words Apple displays are more like accessories for Apple devices. Its sort of like a magic mouse/magic keyboard could technically be used on nonApple machines like Windows but Apple isn't designing it for that and not intending to sell to that market.

Apple isn't in the traditional display business. They dropped out of it entirely from 2016-2019 and they didn't have an actual affordable version for vast majority of Apple users until 2022. Thats 6 years and tells you how little they view their display business and in that time frame it had no impact to their business as Apple went from a market cap of around 500 billion in 2016 to 2.5 billion in 2022.

Display business is ruthless. You compete not only with LG but with companies like ASUS/MSI..etc with low margins and displays very expensive to service with warranty and just the handling with shipping with the size/weight/fragile nature of them. From Apple's point of view compare a $1500+ display from service/warranty perspective that has glass, weight close to 20 pounds to a Macbook Pro thats under 4 pounds and very durable. Displays are a complete PITA and Apple would probably exit out of the display business completely again if for some reason they were forced to really compete market wide in it.

Apple is basically doing low yields on the displays compared to other brands with extremely high quality control. They are almost certainly getting highly graded panels at the factory from LG Display which is why Apple Studio displays have far better QC than other brands but you pay for it.

So don't get me wrong, its not that wanting these extra ports is a bad idea.....obviously it would be great but its not not happening as Apple does not intend for this to be used outside of Apple devices. With something like the Mac Mini/Macbook Pro..etc having an HDMI its completely different. They are not treating it like some Apple accessory thats to be used in the Apple walled garden. Macbooks will be used in corporate environments that are Windows dominated for example where you might show up to a temp desk and connect in to whatever monitor they have. So the HDMI is for flexibility. A typical company that has to allocate 20,000 laptops might end up with a few thousand Macbook orders. Thats a lot of potential money at stake. There is no way a typical coroprate company is going to spend money on an Apple Display. They are going to be used cheap Dells, HPs and Windows/Mac users will connect into them.

I have the LG 32" 6k. I have no complaints about it. Maybe if it cost more I could feel better about it?

It doesn’t even have Dolby Vision HDR and cannot have parity whatsoever with other Apple prosumer products plugged in:

Macbook Pro, iPad Pro, iPhone Pro, and mirroring the Vision Pro.

That’s undesirable for a very meaningful amount of people who are the primary early adopter audience of a 6K monitor to begin with

So I’m going to return the 4K miniLED KTC M27P6 I had bought during this past holidays before the returning window closes. Despite its advertised HDR 1400, while looking good, it’s not that impressive, and offers a worse experience than the MSI MPG 274URDFW E16M, which I also tested. And also worse brightness uniformity.

Let’s cross our fingers so that this 2026 I’m finally able to get my perfect mini LED motor for both my Mac and my PS5 Pro.

Then almost every Mac having HDMI makes Apple horrible at making products.

For those who don’t know, there is a 27" 5K WikiPost that provides known information in a list format.

All three (including Hisense 27GX Pro) announced 27" 5K 165Hz miniLED are gaming displays with HDMI 2.1, so your PS5 Pro is good there.

You’ll notice one key difference between the LG and the MSI is in the DisplayPort 2.1 support (UHBR20 versus UHBR13.5). Both are good enough for HDMI 2.1 (limited to 48 Gbps), but for full 80 Gbps input you need UHBR20.

I would be wary of inflated claims with regard to peak luminance (brightness), but I think VESA can be trusted, so if a monitor gets the “DisplayHDR 1000” or “DisplayHDR 1400” certification (look for the graphic — VESA will sue manufacturers who use that without being certified), that means it has been reliably tested.

There is a fourth announced option, the HKC M9 Pro, which may be the best indicator of where Apple could go with this. 180Hz ProMotion, 27" 5K MiniLED with Thunderbolt 5 and/or DisplayPort 2.1 (UHBR20). You won’t get HDMI 2.1 input (again, limited to 48 Gbps), but you could maybe get an Apple HDMI 2.1 dongle designed to work with the PS5 Pro, which @Ethosik could also use for their desired purpose.

My own prediction, based on the fact there seem to be two model identifiers in play, J427 and J527, is we will see a refresh at the current price point without MiniLED but with ProMotion and A19 Pro soon, like the same time the M5 Pro/Max MacBook Pro launch. Then, in June, alongside the M5 Max/Ultra Mac Studio, the “Studio Display XDR” will launch with MiniLED and 180Hz.

I think the Pro Display updates are for next year — both possible technologies for that need another year of development @ 32" 6K or 8K. There should be news at Display Week this year, though.

My theory is the MSI is using a BOE panel assembly to reach that price, but it isn’t clear who is making the Zero Optical Distance panels/backlights for the LG and the Hisense. So they might be a bit more, but still below the current Studio Display?

Yeah, I don’t know, I’m sure there are practical reasons for it, but optional higher specs for standards like Thunderbolt and DisplayPort are common. Those then become required in the next generation. HDMI 2.2 is like that, “up to 96Gbps” — 96Gbps is optional, not required. The new standard supports three video bandwidth tiers above the 48Gbps maximum of HDMI 2.1: 64Gbps, 80Gbps, and 96Gbps. Except that, with HDMI, believe it or not, even those aren’t actually required:

I think because you want to also use it with a PS5 Pro, you are making the right choice. The UltraGear especially, if you can live with matte. I don’t think you said what Mac you have, but certainly M3/M4 Pro and above can do it. There is no official information with regard to, say, M2 Pro/Max, but those Macs support HDMI 2.1 so I think it’s likely they can do 5K 165Hz. Not sure about the M1 generation and the base M2/M3, maybe not. They would still run at 5K, but perhaps limited to 60Hz?
