Two things about this ad:

1. That piano tune is very annoying

2. Apple depends on Ms office to be 'professional' as their own suit fails on a professional level, and now Ms calls them on this. Good for Ms, Apple shouldn't be so lazy if they push in that direction. I mean Numbers professional without pivot? Yeah...

Wrong already. Pixelmator. However, I'll continue...

Pixelmator is your pro app? Guess I've been schooled. Cloud replacing usb storage for large production files? Of course, what was I thinking.
For the record, when will full adobe applications be coming to ios? Before you write "never, and i dont care" consider how unconvincing your position is.

I think the front page of this post with the side-by-side of the devices says plenty for me. There is no comparison on the screen. The iPad Pro is larger, higher Res, higher brightness/Nits, better color (Producing 121.9 percent and 111 percent of the sRGB color spectrum, respectively, the screens on the 9.7-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros cover more colors than the Surface Pro 4 (99.7 percent)). The Surface keyboard is an Option as well at $129. And maxed out at 128 RAM, the Apple is cheaper. And the battery of the iPad is so much better. So get what you personally need, but saying that one is like a real laptop and the other is just a toy or media consumption device is simply not based in fact. And this article gives a pretty fair comparison, spoiler , the iPad reviewed better. And I am sure other reviews will put the Surface on top. But the real point is that the iPad is a valid option for mobile computing.

More specifically, the iPad is a tablet and the Surface is a laptop without the requirement for a physical keyboard.
Denial here getting desparate. "It NOT a tablet. its a touch laptop with a tablet interface and touch apps that does not require a keyboard". You can argue SP is not competive as a mobile device, but saying its not a tablet is obfuscation

This is weird. Microsoft had moved away from comparing the Surface to iPads (comparing it to Macbooks instead). The SP4 failed as a tablet, so basically it's a laptop where you have to buy the keyboard separately. (to their credit, they "fixed" it with the Surface book).

But now this? Keyboards have existed for iPads since the original (any bluetooth keyboard would work). It doesn't detract the fact that it's a tablet. Those looking for a tablet will always find an iPad to be a better experience. For those looking for a laptop, regular ultrabooks can be had for cheaper than that SP4, and you don't have to pay extra for the keyboard.

The Surface Pro 4 is a unique product, and it has its niche. I don't think going back and comparing it to the iPad is a great strategy. Oh, and making fun of "apps" on iPad where you have Office on it as well? Not good for the Office team.

Seems like an ad made only for the fanboys.

Explain why you just ignore the pen functionality, which is the defining quality of the device

I'd say they're right about all that stuff in the ad, though for everything said I thought, I don't care.

Granted I just use the iPad Air 2 for the usual simple stuff, light photo stuff, recording BS demos in GarageBand that I can work on later on my iMac. And writing a blog in Day One while having the Photos app running in split screen. This I use the Microsoft keyboard for, which works absolutely perfect because there's nothing to connect. The only thing I would maybe miss a laptop for is occasionally mixing on a laptop using GB or Logic, but that's no big deal really.

I personally don't see myself buying a laptop again. Your milage may vary, but Apple isn't totally wrong when they talk about iPads being PC replacements. It just depends on who you're talking to.

Of course it's a computer, it's not a laptop is what it's not. Sorry to be pedantic. I love my big iPad Pro, never bought it to be a work computer and would never use it as one. It is my portable TV, magazine replacement, web browser, email, Facebook etc device. How many uses does a device need before it's worth buying?

It sounds great for all those uses, I don't disagree.

But then why is Timmy and Co. saying it can replace all the computer tasks most people do? That is the bull that has everyone pissed off. Timmy said "I think if you're looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one?" That's the flippant stupidity that has a lot of people so upset.

It has a pen (which has its niche use), but for end user's daily usability and as shown by pretty much Microsoft's advertising materials, it has to have the keyboard, and it is still sold separately. I have actually quite many people using SP4 around me, and they all use it as a laptop, not as a tablet with pen. Some even leave the pen at their homes.
So yes, the pen is useful for a niche segment. In the end, as a tablet first, the iPad still offers a better experience, while the SP4 has become into an ultrabook with touch with a keyboard that you have to pay extra for.

Microsoft had made the right strategy by placing the SP4 against the Macbook. Going back to fight the iPad will only expose its lacking tablet experience, again.

Your whole post is wrong. The reality at the end of the day is that for a high end tablet the surface is the clear winner. You do know Apple makes those and are expensive?

Btw did everyone forget the commercials for Apple bashing PCs? Lol

That is why I'm a fan of innovation and not companies. I don't have to deal w loyalty when something better comes along.

Hobbyist software at best - there ain't a pro around using that software in fact I don't know of a single print house that knows anything about Pixelmator.

iCloud. No you're right, it's better to use media because .... Reasons?

That iCloud, real handy on 8 - 12 hour international flights and in sketchy WiFi coverage in hotels (yeah that hotel stuff is advertised as free and that's about all it's worth when it comes to moving files up and down - notice they all charge a premium now for real bandwidth?)

NEXT.

I am looking at this from marketing strategy perspective. Microsoft made a better choice when they decided to position the SP4 against the Macbook. Remember, they did pit Surface against iPad in the beginning, and it didn't do well. I don't think it's wise to go back to that failed strategy, again.

Disclaimer: I didn't watch the ad nor did I read the 17 pages of comments.

I own a windows 10 tablet and yes it does have the same operating system as a desktop windows 10 PC, and yes I can hook up a mouse and a keyboard and I can pretend it is a desktop PC (actually not bad as one), but the Windows 10 operating system sucks as a tablet operating system with is mix and (not) match applications. Event a lot of Microsoft applications are not very touch friendly, having small click targets on buttons and other action elements. Take for example the standard tree view of any Windows application (the one with the little triangle to expand and collapse). Attempting to expand one is a game of hit and miss. Couple this with the fact that some tree views have other action items surrounding the triangle, it is a lot like a sniper taking out a foreign leader standing between two covert operatives at 500m with a crosswind.

On the other hand, the apps on the iPad are designed with touch in mind from the beginning. Yes, the iPad is not a desktop computer running a desktop operating system. It is a touch based computer running a touch based operating system.

Apple did PC bashing, in the past. They have then moved on in terms of marketing strategy.

Microsoft did pit the Surface against iPads before, and it didn't work. With the SP4, they pit it against Macbooks, and it is more fitting. Going back to iPad-envy does not seem like a wise move.

I have an SP4 mind you. Just because one have a criticism on one thing, doesn't mean one is a fan of the opposite.

I own Apple products yet I am about as far away from being a fanboy as possible. Go figure.

Long time Macbook Pro user, just bought a Surface Pro 4 recently, it wasn't a hard decision. The Macbook Pro is more refine but for a touchscreen device that can take notes and do work, the iPad Pro never had a chance. I might pick up a base model of the iPad Pro still for dad, since he is retired ...

Surface Pro actually makes both the Macbook and iPad Pro obsolete because one doesn't have touch input versatility and the other doesn't have trackpad/mouse support and they both lack the professional software ecosystem of Windows.

This seems like a pseudo-religious distinction. Surfaces don't decide how they will be controlled, users decide how they want to address the device. I have some complaints about the Surface, but have never found it confusing. May the tablet gist be with you.
Oh it is religious! Very religious. There is this ideal of a "magic screen" you hold in your hand and direct manipulate with your own ten fingers. It's completely silent and light, blazing fast with incredible battery life. You don't even think about it, there is a full computer behind it? It's just you and the screen alone in the universe. Amazing how close we've come to paradise with the iPad. And then comes the devil and tells you: "But mine is better, because it has a trackpad." "PC does whaaat?" Don't you get it, tablets are great, because you don't ever need a trackpad. Never! Indirect mouse pointer movements are for losers. That's what we did in the stone age of computing, before 2010. Everyone even suggesting, Surface might be a good tablet, should burn on the stake. That is how religious this is. Witch!

I highly doubt people who run devices like Surface Pro care about millions of stretched out phone crapplets when they can run professional software like OrCAD, SolidWorks, ANSYS Mechanical FEA, etc. They can still run phone crapplets on their phone so the iPad Pro is a redundant tertiary device.

And I retort by saying that I doubt the majority of people using a SP4 are using any of the prorgans you mentioned.

You're not supposed to write novels in the cell of a spreadsheet. Of course it's always the entire string. That's by design!

I can perform that task in OS iNumbers but not iOS iNumbers and that's what the discussion is about - it's all about the incompatibility of the iWork suite between the 2 operating systems.
