I live my surface pro 4. Extreme portability, fast and just works. I don't have any issues with tablet mode, and the pen is great. It's not as good a tablet as an iPad Pro, but then again the iPad Pro isn't as good of a computer for my needs. Different strokes for different folks, as is always the case.

Yeah Im not saying its a terrible device, its well made and I do like the design and the stand.

There is a difference tho between "I dont have issues in tablet mode" and the iPad touch experience.

The secret is you cannot make a device that is top of the line in both categories.

A macbook pro or proper windows 10 laptop runs rings around the surface as a laptop and as a tablet it really is useless. Windows app store is a ghost town, even android tablets are better.

One of my friend has a surface 3, and he loves it, but even he says that tablet mode makes you cry.

The SP4 beats any laptop in portability, especially with the integrated keyboard cover. IMO, of course. My wife uses it in tablet mode, and she doesn't cry. :) So again, different experiences for different folks. The full windows keyboard is what distances the SP4 ahead of the ipad pro. That being said, I like emails and browsing on my ipad, but when I have to do windows stuff, out comes the sp4.

I think apple could if they made an macos/ios hybrid

I use it as a tablet--its great. How's that macbook pro pen fuctionality? The windows store has fewer apps. but really--what am i missing?

Go to amazon or reddit and read comments sometime. A lot of people really like this device. There is good and bad in Surface 4, but I think the hybrid concept is sound

There is absolutely no issue with the tablet mode. This device is amazing. I haven't touched my retina MacBook or the iPad since I bought the surface.

Except they'd either have to have some Frankenstein solution with processor or move one OS to the other, which would really kill the app advantage. Oh, or they could do virtualization and kill battery life.

The SP4 must have done a lot to stop Edge from revving up the fans and just generally making the thing a heater.

Fair enough. I would still argue the portability bit.

Yeah I do like the device as well actually, believe it or not, on papers it sounds great. Its well made and the stand is awesome.
In reality tho it run windows, has an almost non existent app store and is not optimised for touch. Its a compromise in every aspect, even the laptop bit is not top of the line.

Hybrid devices are not the way to go IMO, and I am glad apple is not trying that madness. OSX on a touch screen would suck so badly.

I have a SP3 and for my needs, its definitely superior then the iPad. I want an iPad Pro, but like the commercial that this thread is about, I need certain things, which the SP gives me, but sadly the iPad Pro doesn't.

So far, its been a solid computer, but I will say I do miss the simplicity of OS X. I had trouble connecting to wifi at a the place I was staying a few weeks ago. My MBP (I brought that too), would connect no problem at all, the SP3 had issues which I finally resolved but it was a headache to be sure. I brought two computers, because I needed to work, and my kids like to use one as well.

Why do you assume people are lying. Isn't it possible some of us like the tablet mode? In fact, I'm responding to you right now on my Surface in...(gasp!)...tablet mode. It works fine.

Shouldn't Microsoft advertise the features that Surface has instead of bashing out the competition?
my exact thoughts !!!
shows they feel they are still behind still when they have to try to sound better than something they say is not competition ?

both have pros cons

Because its the truth

Depends what you use it for in Tablet mode.

Personally the following :

Netflix
Mail
Internet
Kindle
Office
Photoshop
MangaStudio
BitWig Studio
Note taking

These are all optimised for touch and all work perfectly. A simple regedit fix unlocks all the advanced power saving so you don't have the processor ramping up and fans spewing out heat.
the kickstand makes it a perfect graphics tablet.

So yeah, for myself and I'm guessing many many others the Surface Pro is an excellent tablet / laptop / desktop..

Go figure.

Wifi issues and Surface seem to go together a lot.

For consumption such as surfing the internet people prefer a browser that can render all sites properly. Chrome desktop is the best while Safari desktop and iOS are usually the worst.

https://html5test.com/results/desktop.html

How about listing actual sites that Chrome renders right and Safari doesn't?

Correct that is why I said at the beginning they tried to compete w the iPad but win rt failed hard and they had to unify everything. Nevertheless it feels solid and well built; feels more deluxe than any Apple portable device I have owned. The flap to hold it is overrated though since you can't adjust the incline. As far as the ratio surpringly I like it for reading more than the 10" w the more standard ratio format. Good for movies as well.

IMHO SP4 is a better overall tablet than the iPad Pro. If all you care about is using the pencil then the iPad would be a better choice. If apple brings a $500 10" tablet w pencil support then it can bring more excitement to the tablet line and more sales.
I rather have more than 3 hours of battery life...surface is a mess as a tablet....and i have had 3 surface 4s and all of them were buggy and with low battery life...thank goodness for my iPad Pro 9.7 and my ipad pro 12.9...otherwise i use a real laptop if i need something that the iPads can't offer but never again a Surface Pro ....

Tim? Shouldn't you be working on a keynote? Or was that it for this year?

What good is all the battery life in the world if your work can't get done on an ipad pro? (My comment only as I need a windows computer for my daily work life) As I said we like our sp4, don't need to take all that stuff on vacations. One sp4, one ipad and two phones, we're all set. And the sp4 fits nicely in a small carrying case.

For a lot of people. Why do you think they always have a good six months of "firmware updates" to fix wifi issues after every Surface release? ;)
Not for nothing, I do love my SP3, its been a rock solid computer (aside from the intermittent wifi issues).

In fact, I'm looking to get the the SurfaceBook, a more powerful "laptop" and it has the ability to be used as a tablet.

Yeah, don't misunderstand me either. Despite every small complaint I have about my Surface, it's still amazing. I do wish they'd steal PiP from the iPad Pro, but that's just me.

Ok, and you keep living in your bubble pretending windows 10 is a good touch experience.
I'm not living in a bubble and I find windows 10 to be superior in a number of ways to iOS. Addmitedly, I don't use my SP3 in tablet mode much, but I do use it that way. Sometimes with excel opened up and using it as a tablet.

Aside from my intermittent wifi issues when I travel (wifi has been rock solid at home), the SP3 has been a great computer

I've largely stopped using my iPad, and the only iPad I have is a mini, so I don't think I ever used PiP. I'm not saying its a bad feature but its one that isn't really available to me on the iPad side so I can't miss what I never used.

With that said, I do think its a nice feature
