You don't need to jailbreak to get custom ringtones. However, for text tones you do.Thats why some people jailbreak. I've got custom ring tones I can live with.

New Text Notifications Ridiculously Long?

I thought some of them were pretty good, but the length is just wrong. They're practically ring tones! Geez, cut 'em down by at least half and then we can talk.

Ah, I see. You have to into "edit" with the contact to change the text sound. Not that it matters. Most of them would be very annoying to listen to on a regular basis!

I wanna know who the person is at Apple who said "Hey, I think these tones sound good. I'm sure people will like them"....and then I wanna know who the boss was that said "Yea, those are great, lets go with those." Does Apple do anything based on the feedback of their customers??? I don't think anyone was asking for stupid, long, ridiculous tones that nobody in their right mind would use. We want the ability to make our own tones since Apple clearly has no clue
I agree, the new tones are mostly way too long to be used as text tones. Some of them would be really good if the length was sliced in half. I'm using 'Typewriters' myself simply because it makes me smile when I hear it.
I thought you guys were just whining, until I updated. Every single one is ridiculously long. It's sort of comical, but I really which there was at least one short option. Sticking with tri-tone for now.

I'm quite surprised at the length of the new SMS tones. Perhaps Apple found that most people thought the original tones were too short.
It does seem unusual that they didn't offer a variety of lengths. I'm a little nervous about switching to a new tone -- you never know when you'll forget to switch your phone to vibrate. At least Tri-tone minimizes my embarrassment.
Thoughts? Do you find that the new tones are perfect in length, or would you prefer something shorter?

Long? They arent any different to the TriTone?!
One thing I dont get is why does the Apple.com say there are 17 new text tones when I only have 6?
Baffling. Why are ringtones and text tones different lists? Why can I add to one but not the other? So annoyingly useless.
If people are complaining about the 'long 17 tones' and you're seeing '6 short tones' then MY guess is that you somehow don't have the new tones. Are you on 4.2.1?

The new tones are only for iPhone 4. The other iPhones aren't powerful enough hardware-wise to support the new ones
I hate how companies purposely do artificial software limitations.
4.2.1 (8C148a). Non jailbroken and updated through itunes last night. Under 'Text Tone' I get: Tri-Tone, Chime, Glass, Horn, Bell, Electronic and None.
What the frig is going on?
I have no idea either! Very strange. Maybe try updating it again? Is that even possible?
