The new text tones are only for iPhone 4 (although Apple.com says they are available on "iPhone").

WTF? Why? Is the 3GS now deemed by Apple not 'magical' enough to play certain sounds? Maybe the are too long and the 3GS cant handle them?

That is friggin lame. Apple are starting to do my tits in big time.

Its not the tones I'm bothered about. As long as someone can confirm on a 3GS I should only get 6 tones with 4.2.1 (for some reason)?

What gets up my nose is that a once great company is now just another bully boy and say one thing but do another. There quality control is getting worse, their products are getting worse. They have their fingers in too many pies and as such their innovations are slowing and there seem to be a lot more bugs with everything they do. "Your holding it wrong" No mate. You made it wrong! My bro does nothing but complain about his iPhone 4, its his first Apple product and says it will be his last. Apple arent doing themselves any favours.

Sorry for the rant.

They want to give people incentives to update to the new hardware.

HA!

Thats all well and good but I dont think people are going to pay all that money for 11 more ringtones on a phone that barely works.

It really is ridiculous that Apple doesn't allow custom tones to be used for all these sounds. Maybe in 1.0 days it was excusable to get the phone out the door, but 4.2? Custom tones are long overdue.

Looks like it's time to jailbreak. But yeah, Apple really needs to hop on the train and allow their users to make custom text tones. Come on, it's the best smartphone in the world and yet it can't have simple customized text tones.

I wanna know who the person is at Apple who said "Hey, I think these tones sound good. I'm sure people will like them"....and then I wanna know who the boss was that said "Yea, those are great, lets go with those." Does Apple do anything based on the feedback of their customers??? I don't think anyone was asking for stupid, long, ridiculous tones that nobody in their right mind would use. We want the ability to make our own tones since Apple clearly has no clue

Steve jobs decides what people want and love. fan boys say dumb shizzle like "just live with it "

I would really like to meet the person who said "You know what would be a great a text message alert!? THE TELEGRAPH SOUND!"

It's almost a piss take! The tones are so bad it's like they said... 'we know everyone really wants custom tones but we're going to be different and spend god knows how much developing these absolutely useless tones as a way of saying up yours'

Seriously my 2004 Nokia could have any MP3 as a text ringtone but my £500 2010 latest smartphone cannot? I get about 40-60 texts per day including twitter text alerts which sometimes come together in quick succession. I need something short and not annoying so my workmates don't shoot me!

I have literally never heard anything but tri-tone, all of the others are so poor that most people stick with the default "least awful" tone.

I'd like custom tones so that I can have the Metal Gear Alert tone, so much fun to be had watching others jump when it goes off, then realise they aren't playing MGS

Yea, the new text tones are the dumbest ****ing things they could have possibly come up with for that application. I would like to know what idiot decided to make those abysmal tones and why.

You watch, there tones seem bad right now, but they're actually the best SMS tones ever made and more phone companies are going to stop offering custom tones and include similar awesome tones like Apple's.

People are going to be lining up to buy the iPhone 5 when they find out that it includes even more awesome free tones. Who needs to be messing with text tone installation and management when the awesome ones are already there.

Trust me, these are the only tones you'll ever need.

It seems like Apple designed those sounds in about 5 minutes. This is one of the reasons I am happy I jailbroke. I really like the custom SMS tones in the G.O.C. HD theme and they sound different then all my friends iPhones and are not annoying.

4.2.1 (8C148a). Non jailbroken and updated through itunes last night. Under 'Text Tone' I get: Tri-Tone, Chime, Glass, Horn, Bell, Electronic and None.

What the frig is going on?

Good evening, Mr. Boobs. May I suggest that you consider the possibility that you are on an iPhone 3G or an iPhone 3GS. Mr. Boobs, the new tones were not carried over to these phones by Apple in the newest firmware update. The implication being of course, a small yet subtle hint to you, Mr. Boobs, that your phone is obsolete and that perhaps it is time to acquire an iPhone 4, or at the very least, the means to acquire one if you wish to use these new tones.
