I use Transmission with OSX and utorrent with Windows. Transmission just feels like a more polished app for OSX than utorrent does.

But both are good, and slim, and FREE! So I would suggest trying them both and sticking to the one that suits you best.

+1. exactly what i use on osx and windows.

I started off with Transmission, then went to uTorrent and then back to Transmission. There were a few things I tried downloading that would only wouldn't work with Transmission, hence the switch. But I didn't like how with uTorrent, you couldn't specify where you wanted to save a particular file. So I switched back to Transmission and it's been working great.

Transmission also looks really sexy if you enable the Compact View.

All torrents were downloaded for the purpose of the demonstrating the compact view function, as seen in the screenshot, and were deleted after capturing said screenshot.

I like the group options in Transmission.

You can probably do it in uTorrent but I haven't checked.

Transmission most of the time, when i have my macbook in clamshell downloading to an external via esata. Utorrent when i am not at home to an portable usb drive.

Another vote for Transmission.

Keep in mind torrenting itself if not illegal, hell, the iPhone dev team distributes their releases through torrents.

However, if you're talking about torrenting illegaly, then... it's illegal! :p

Transmission is my favorite, where on my PC id get up to 180 k/bs a second using bittorent, Transmission gets upto 230 k/b's. Plus it shows you who is connected to your computer, the ip adress and options to block them too.

I to am a brand new Mac user. Quite frankly I am clueless.
I downloaded transmission and all I have is a mumble jumble of files. Being an ex pc user I was expecting to see a setup file or something that says install. I have a collection of files with extentions that baffle me.
Anything is easy when you know what your doing
But quite frankly I must be totally missing something.
I was trying to download pwnage which was a torrent file.
I then downloaded transmission to download.
I am just stuck at this point

"Installing an application in Mac OS X is pretty damn easy, you just drag it into the Apps folder."
I downloaded transmission and then dragged it to the apps folder. It was not installed and when I open it from within the apps folder I just see a group of files with extensions that are unfamiliar to me. So at this point I have no idea

I used Transmission religiously, but just recently I've switched to Vuze. Let me tell you; it's the best torrent downloader out there. The features it packs are just astounding.

First off, you can search torrents within Vuze, and it searches across several hosts to compile a list of the top seeded and top rated torrents. It's one simple click to download, and I've never had any issues. Now Vuze does prioritize movies and TV shows, but I've had great luck with programs, games and music. If you can't find what you want through Vuze, just go online, find the torrent, and download via Vuze.

The best part about Vuze; you can watch any video format on it. You no longer have to use VLC or XVID; it'll just download the necessary plugins within seconds. It also gives you the ability to use subtitles when you watch movies and wirelessly transfer movies or music to your PS3, Xbox, etc. instantly; so that you can watch on your TV. It will also encode these videos into a format watchable in iTunes and on your iDevices. You can burn DVDs and CDs in Vuze aswell. The interface is simple and elegant as an added plus.

So yeah, if you have all these awesome features + the same usability from transmission, why not use Vuze?

Dude, don't bother with Transmission and the messy process of finding the right torrent. As I said, use Vuze. Just download it and try at the very least.

Vuze runs incredibly slow, is crash prone, and uses a lot of bandwidth (I can't figure out why) and is extremely resource intensive. If you just want to download torrents and have the know how on how to search for them and already have VLC and Perian installed, then Transmission is a great choice.

None of what you said resonates with my experience. In all the time I've used Vuze (8 months), it has crashed twice. As for bandwidth, it consumes what it needs. If you didn't stop the files after you finished downloading them, then yes, they will eat up bandwidth through seeding.

Transmission is fine of course, but many many people have trouble finding torrents online, and the right ones at that.

dude not trying to stir anything up but vuze is garbage compared to transmission or utorrent, its like you might as well just have limewire. its an unnecessary resource hog that should be killed off.

Chalk up another one for Transmission.

And as it's been said, the concept of torrenting itself is not illegal. In fact, some communities use torrents as an official distribution method; Ubuntu Linux distros are commonly downloaded via torrents, for example.

Distributing copyrighted material/media... well, that's another case entirely.
