Only Apple would make this a premium offering. You must buy their $1000+ phone AND have a recurring subscription to get a voice assistant that can do the basics.
Exactly, they won't be able to bring it over the 15, 14 and even the 13 lineup because despite of having the highest RAW performance of any processor, only the newest Apple silicon will be able to support such innovative feature.

As it already happened with the 14 Pro Max that can't use the 24 MP shooting mode.

Will this be limited to iPhone 16 pro? I’m about to jump on a 15 for free through my carrier but as soon as I do, I’ll find out this is limited to a phone I don’t have when I could have just kept my 14 for another year.
I would assume it is limited.

Historically, Apple has always gated “AI” features to new iPhones even when it didn’t seem to make sense. They always then market how much faster their “AI cores” are each release. Lately, that’s been heavily geared to improved processing for photos. Like how the iPhone 15 Pro has enhanced “AI” powered photo processing with identical camera hardware as the iPhone 14 Pro.

Considering how much of a buzzword AI is right now. I see Apple making it a centerpiece to push people onto new phones.

We shall see though…

I wonder if Apple needs to go that route. IMHO I think we would be more impressed if Apple details how things work better versus how they worked before. What good does it say that you are using something AI powered without showing comparisons. They could show this readily by commercials. ;)

so far generative AI has not produced much improvement in spoken comprehension. If Siri improves that and generative AI can be stripped down to better translate spoken AI into actionable commands that would be impressive. But so far generative AI has not bridged this gap. Would love to see Apple do it.

two things:
- there's no such thing as a free iPhone 15.
- your 14 is still a plenty good phone.
You are correct. It will be about $130 out of pocket after buying an SE and taxes. I’ll get $160 instant credit along with $640 in bill credits. Also, ~$450 for selling the 14.

In fairness, it becomes about the shareholders from the moment a company goes public. It’s just a slippery slope, and we’re far enough down that companies are struggling to even pretend they still care about what is right for the customer. Apple still does a better job than most at pretending. My echo shows me ads I can’t turn off right out of the box.
Good news…most long term successful companies are successful because doing good for customers leads to Good share holder outcomes. Very few companies that Can long cater only to one or the other and succeed.

AI on iPhones will most certainly "require" a new co-processor chip, named something like "Intelligence Engine", and thus force you get an iPhone 16 or newer (or 17, or any other model beyond 15, if that's the one that gets it).

It's going to be "on-device", so that they don't rely on a server. And, more importantly, on-device so it can roll out several many generations of it over the coming years, having the AI improve on subsequent iPhone models.

It'll be a lot like "resetting" all the progress Apple has made to the iPhone CPU over the years, with big leaps between each iteration of the "Intelligence Engine" co-processor chip.
Processor is not as important for generative AI as gigantic amounts of memory swapping around. Likely it will be done off device unless Apple abstracts the essential bits somehow and minimizes them.

And not doubt iOS18 will limit generative Siri to Apple apps and that "magically" open it up to developers in iOS19...

It’s called “dogfooding” and it makes sense. Gives them time to clean up and refine APIs, based on their own internal experience, before making them public and permanent.

Better to take the time to get APIs right than have to refactor or replace them after a few years. Or worse, just be stuck with a crap API forever.

I do wonder how AI can (in the mid to long term) be reconciled with the ubiquitous call for more sustainability.
It’s not exactly a secret how much energy AI data centers are using. So especially from a company like Apple I would like to see some kind of statement on that. Or are we just going to pretend this is good and absolutely essential use of insane amounts of energy?

Microsoft were recently pushing “ads” on the Xbox Home Screen to encourage users to save energy - while the company itself is massively pushing their AI crap. Like my individual savings of energy could possibly make any difference with that background. But sure, I’ll unplug my Xbox when I’m not using it.
Yeah, add that to the fact that I generally don't need AI in my life for my normal day to day stuff. I just kind of don't want it. I'm sick of computers trying to guess what I want to be honest. MS office is the worst at this, I'll spend more time trying to fight the automated actions than it would have taken me to just do the thing I wanted manually. AI is like another step in that direction of guessing wrong all the time. If it can't be correct 99.9% of the time, I'm not interested.

A Siri that worked as well as Chat GPT 4.0 and handled all the iOS stuff would be worth money to me. I hate upgrading the iPhone but I'd pay an arm and a leg for one that did that. But I'll believe it when I see it. For years I've been hoping Siri would just catch up to Alexa.

Hopefully this could be what saves Siri, as unlike the other assistants, it's so far behind the rest it's not even funny
Siri is a "D-" student that has not kept up with the other, "D+" students. None of them are particularly good, so any real improvements would be welcome.

Apple is preparing to preview a new version of Siri with generative AI and a range of new capabilities at WWDC, according to a post on the Korean social media site Naver from a user with a track record for posting Apple rumors.

According to developer sources speaking to the operator of tech news aggregator account "yeux1122" on Naver, Apple has recently made progress with integrating generative AI into Siri using its Ajax-based model that Bloomberg's Mark Gurman first mentioned in July. The new version of Siri apparently touts natural conversation capabilities, as well as increased user personalization.

The new features are believed to be available across devices, suggesting that the new version of Siri will retain conversation information from one device to another. It is also said to feature a new "Apple-specific creational service," which might relate to the previously reported Siri-based Shortcuts capabilities rumored for iOS 18.

Apple is purportedly working on linkages for the new version of Siri to connect to various external services, likely via an API. Finally, the report suggests that some of Apple's new AI features may differ based on subscription service status, but it is unclear what shape this could take.

A recent forecast from Deepwater Asset Management similarly claimed that Apple will bring generative AI to Siri this year. The Naver blog account has a mixed track record for forecasting Apple's plans, but some of its claims have proven to be significant. For example, in March 2022 it accurately revealed some details about the third-generation iPhone SE ahead of Apple launching the model. In October of the same year it also accurately predicted that Apple would delay the release of new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models until early 2023.

At this point, Apple just needs to ditch Siri for something with a completely different name and design.

It's like OJ Simpson trying to rebuild his credibility after all these years.

And the sad part is, unless something has changed in a recent update, your expensive iPhone (and mine) can only have one timer running. Whereas my $30 Alexa in the kitchen can have multiple.
Hey Siri, set a 3 minute pasta timer.
Hey Siri, set a 9 minute egg timer.
Hey Siri, show all timers.

Siri in 2024 still feels like it felt in the 90s.

Useless and essentially nonexistent.

If it gets revealed at WWDC, it probably is for current devices. They‘re not going to spoil iPhone 16 exclusive features at WWDC (at least not something as big as Siri not sucking).

Probably. Won’t be the first time Apple restricts a new feature to the newest devices to entice upgrades, even if older hardware can do it.

Annoying, but that’s what it means to be a publicly traded company.
Yeah, why can’t my 14 Pro be updated to give me the option of 24mp photos? I have to assume by Apple’s lack of technical explanation why this isn’t possible that it probably is possible, but they don’t want give it to us.

Unless there’ll be two versions, one of which will be exclusive to the 16.

i’m wondering if there’s any chance we’ll hear a boost to Siri when the Vision Pro gets announced in a few weeks. After all, vision, pro will need Siri among other things in order to work, and the Vision Pro team originally did not want Siri to be connected to the Vision Pro Because it was so undependable.

Will be wonderful to see Siri improve. Siri desperately needs a revamp.

Apple, PLEASE, for the love of H100's, when I am the ONLY male in the house (with a very deep voice), don't have Siri ask once (or more) per week, "Who is speaking?" This, more than anything, drives me CRAZY!!! It just reinforces how completely STUPID Siri is!
You can't expect intelligence from A.I. that goes against the very meaning of artificial.

artificial
− made in imitation of a natural product
1 (adj.) in the sense of synthetic
2 (adj.) in the sense of insincere
3 (adj.) in the sense of fake

synthetic

− something resulting from synthesis rather than occurring naturally

insincere
− not feeling, believing, or meaning something although you pretend to

It's not real intelligence, it's fake intelligence!
Not sincerely intelligent, pretending to be intelligent.
There's no intelligence occurring naturally in artificial intelligence synthesis.
