Now for $2, we will be able to have a WiFi hotspot for up to 12 users with WPA2. I assume this also means it will be infrastructure instead of ad-hoc. Byebye MyWi (at least for most people!)

This makes it so you won't have to pay the carrier tax for using it.

    Awesome.

The only reason I got MyWi is I thought only WiFi can tether multiple devices.
But turned out TetherMe can provide multiple internet connection through bluetooth (I am on iPhone 4, iOS 4.1).

This is pretty cool, I would like to now more about it, my understanding was that the Driver for the wifi chip did not supported Infrastructure, so if they actually did it that means they overwrote the drivers which is a big deal, I wonder how stable it is and also big big kudos since rewriting the driver is not a small thing, and releasing it for $2...nice.

    Up to 12 users? Wow.
The stock personal wifi is up to 5 right?

In mycountry they dont charge you for tethering. So i have no problem :D but i still understand the anoyence of the extra charge. But i didn't know they charge you for that in the us.

Actually, this just uses the stock Personal Hotspot feature. The main thing this does is activate it so you don't have to pay the AT&T/Verizon "tax"

Just looked at it again. It's actually 13 because that's apparently the size Apple made the subnet (13 available IP addresses for wireless clients)

So does that mean that the stock feature it is in fact enterprise? I haven't seen anything about it just curious I haven't really had the chance to download 4.3 yet (I know shame on me, cut me a slack i've been sick :p)

So this will modify the factory tethering to add more functionality and features right? It's not a whole separate app?
I didn't think the stock wifi hotspot had wpa security. Great stuff.

If the new drivers are in fact infrastructure and it support wpa2 them I think we should see a nice update of MyWi with a nice features, as I said before I love to have control over the Tx Power and maybe some routing features like port forwarding, DMZ and other, which if in fact the driver were updated we should be able to see on the next revision bringing the value to the app. I always said that competition is great

That's interesting, I didn't realize that it actually made modifications beyond just being able to activate it without carrier approval. That's pretty awesome.

    Here is the complete changelog.

Really glad to see this. Does the "tetherme" also add the APN editing functionality and MMS settings like the old tetherme did? It's great for using the phone off ATT and being able to edit the APN\carrier settings as needed :)

I wonder if it'll be a free upgrade for current owners or if it'll be a paid update for everyone like MiWi did with 4.x... either way no complaints from me, $2 is VERY reasonable, I felt so disenfranchised after I spent $20 on MyWi then a month later was "asked" to spend $10 more to "update" to the current version just released. :)

UPDATE: Saw ulbador's post that it does in fact add the 4.2like editing feature, woohoo!

This is out now, and the program is still $2, so I'm doubt they will charge an update fee later.

Wow, if this is delivering what it promises I won't be buying MyWi. I'd prefer to keep tethering stock.

Anyone with 4.3 want to try it out?

That's part of the reason I never actually bought MyWi. Well that and the insecurity of it.

WEP only was definitely a put off for me as well. You may as well not have security.

Does tetherme only work via bluetooth? If so, isn't that a huge disadvantage vs. mywi? I've been using mywi and it works ok but I had some problems with my computer losing its connection to my phone. I'm not sure if it's my computer that's the problem or mywi though.

If you are on 4.2.1 or less, it works with Bluetooth or USB. With 4.3, this turns on the personal hotspot feature.

Ah - gotcha. Thanks. Maybe I'll just go ahead and buy it now since I know that I'll eventually upgrade to 4.3 (or at least I think I will). So I guess the main advantage here is wpa2 vs wep on mywi?
