If TetherMe charged previous customers another $2, I would consider it a bargain.
I never bought MyWi, although I was tempted when I won my ipad. I'm curious what's going to happen to the people who make the program. Will they be forced to drop their prices or will they fade into obscurity?
I wonder if it'll be a free upgrade for current owners or if it'll be a paid update for everyone like MiWi did with 4.x... either way no complaints from me, $2 is VERY reasonable, I felt so disenfranchised after I spent $20 on MyWi then a month later was "asked" to spend $10 more to "update" to the current version just released. :)

Intelliborn has a few more pretty good programs. I doubt they're going anywhere.

What exactly is it about it being native that makes it better than what mywi offers?
Stability and integration.

MyWi is more customizable though (antenna power).

The bottom line is that it offers huge advantages. For me, at the very least, it offers WPA2 encryption instead of WEP (because of ad-hoc vs infrastructure). Intelliborn has never been able to hack the WiFi chip. This will probably open it up because the driver will already be present.

When I clicked to buy on my 3g iPad, I got the message:

"Unable to purchase; this product requires an iPhone"

Anyone else?

Why do you need an iPhone to buy this????

EDIT: nvm. Guess ONLY the iPhone will feature the personal hotspot. iPad and other iDevices will not.

Anybody who updated to the latest version of TetherMe notice a two-tone beep from your iPhone every 30-60 minutes?

My MyWi beeps twice when it receives a connection via USB (I use USB tethering most of the time)

Gonna buy this now, one I mainly use USB tethering, two for 4.3 ;)

Does it beep every once in a while when it's still plugged in over USB? It's getting a bit annoying having it beep every so often. I can't seem to find a way to disable it...

Do you have 'Alert On Connect' set to Off?

Actually, I found that option in MyWi (it's installed, but I don't use it) and disabled it. That seems to have made the beeping go away.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Not sure, Only use it for 30-40 mins at a time, mainly in classes.

So here is a question, although probably one we will not know the answer to for a while yet. Since this enables the "native" tethering hot spot option built into 4.3, do you all think companies like AT&T or Verizon will be able to detect that and then charge you for it?

I mean, this is different than what I understand MyWi to do, so just because most of us who use MyWi have never been charged does not mean it will be the case with this new way.

Thoughts?

Tetherme has been working fine for a long time using native tethering and noone got charged.
I doubt they will now.

TetherMe has always enabled native tethering on the device, it's just been USB or Bluetooth up until now. If AT&T couldn't detect something using the native USB tethering, I can't imagine they'd be able to detect the new Wi-Fi tethering either.

Ah - gotcha. Thanks. Maybe I'll just go ahead and buy it now since I know that I'll eventually upgrade to 4.3 (or at least I think I will). So I guess the main advantage here is wpa2 vs wep on mywi?

I'd say the main advantage is the order of magnitude price difference.

Even with the price increase once 4.3 comes out, I imagine TetherMe will still be cheaper.
My main issues are with the ad hoc and the insecurity of the faux wifi.

Problem is waiting on JB when 4.3 comes out so the native hotspot feature can be turned on rather than usb tether or bluetooth tethering correct?

where did you hear of a price increase for TetherMe?
As I posted earlier:

Increasing the price of #TetherMe to $2.99 on 4.3+ so long as WiFi continues to work on final due to extra work, still $1.99 for now...

Just to clarify - if you already have it - or buy it soon, there won't be any extra charges to continue to receive updates of #TetherMe
