Wow, these MacBooks certainly have not been put on a diet. They've piled on some considerable weight & fatness since the last generation! Weren't the M1 series of chips supposed to enable smaller and lighter designs? Or at least, better battery life and thermals within the existing ones?
They could've absolutely made these slimmer, but they chose not to and opted for performance with no throttling and good battery.
Calling that video “extensive” is a stretch. ?
Considering the circumstances surrounding the yet-to-be lifted embargo it's a fair choice of words.

morons cried incessantly about having unnecessary HDMI ports back, as well as SD card readers, though the latter i can give a pass to.

but yeah, lets have HDMI back even though USB-C can easily take care of what an HDMI port would do, but in a much smaller and more efficient form factor.

those people are to blame, and they should be ashamed of themselves.

The thickness of the machine surely gives the design room to grow to support the next 3-4 M chips. I don’t expect Apple are going to make an entirely new chassis every processor revision.

As I said before these new MBPs LOOK thicker! We know they technically are but the appearance given their new ugly chassis design makes it look thick, clunky, and ugly. Let’s not forget how much heavier it is.

Jesus, if some of the comments in this thread are not supposed to be a joke, some people really just buy the most expensive computer they can despite never actually needing the power involved, I guess? I cannot believe how many people here are complaining about a laptop designed for pro use cases being large enough to have a high-performance mode, additional ports, and a vastly better battery life.

The MacBook Air is thataway. Why are you complaining about a product that is clearly not designed for you?
Bet you couldn’t say the same if it was Dell releasing a laptop like the new MacBook Pro with a notch, the irony is strong on macrumours.

Yep, and adding a notch when there is a bezel also ruined this design. I get that M1 needs cooling but it seems to me Apple really just dropped the ball on design.

I am sorry. That's just my personal opinion. But I really don't find it good looking. In fact I find Apple really lazy. Now I am not saying: oh change the design every two years like some cheap Windows laptop. But geez. My Powerbook G4 looked exactly the same (except for the keyboard). And that was 15+ years ago. It's also gotten quite thick and big. Irrelevant when used as a pseudo-desktop. But for people who actually take it out every day, I honestly find it too big and too thick compared the 15 and 16"ers of yesteryear.
They're equally portable and can easily be taken anywhere. It's essentially the same size and thickness as the last 16 inch. The only difference is the now thoroughly outdated 16 inch had a taper to hide it, but the weight is almost identical.

Got my M1 Max early. Wow look at the thickness compared to older MacBook Pro. And the space gray is dark on these new MacBook Pro’s ?

The design is perfect. I think you're just upset that with the annoucement of these, your old MBP was made irrelevant overnight.

I’m guessing that before long there will be an option for the OS to disable that “notch” area for those that are annoyed by it, effectively providing a larger mostly-black bezel ares, and leave it enabled for those who like the extra vertical space it provides by moving the menu there.

Apple desktop computer thickness: .45 inches

Apple notebook computer thickness: .66 inches

?
Yes, it's funny, but unfortunately physics is like that. iMac has M1 so far which is one small chip going up to 15W and doesn't need much cooling in comparison to M1 Pro and M1 Max with up to 30W with CPU and up to 60W for GPUs cores which need to be cooled for sustainable top graphic power. 15W vs. 90W is a big difference.

That's incorrect.

2008 Macbook Pro 15" = 5.4 pounds
2008 Macbook Pro 17" = 6.8 pounds
2019 16" Macbook Pro = 4.3 pounds
2021 16" Macbook M1 Pro = 4.7 pounds
2021 16" Macbook Pro M1 Max = 4.8 pounds

and

2016 15" MacBook Pro = 4.02 pounds.

Anyone going from that to the Max is getting a 19% increase in weight.

Bet you couldn’t say the same if it was Dell releasing a laptop like the new MacBook Pro with a notch, the irony is strong on macrumours.
That... doesn't relate at all to what I'm responding to? (And I really don't care about the notch. Every design has its considerations, and I think on balance I'd rather have a well-positioned or better webcam than a smaller bezel and worse, as is the tradeoff that Dell has made or makes now. You're literally sacrificing no screen real estate compared to previous MacBook screens even with the notch. It makes very little sense to me to complain about it.)

The irony of you complaining about MacRumors as a whole as fanboys while posting on MacRumors seems a bit more strong to me.

It's not ports. Previous (perceived-to-be) thinner MBpros had these resurrected ports.

The best answer to all "Thick" comments is to show the measurements. Numbers don't lie. But looking at pictures, one can easily be fooled.

Is that Elvis testing a new MBpro? ;)

2015 15” MacBook Pro was 0.71”
2021 16” MacBook Pro is 0.68”

It’s a combination of the ports re-adding some thickness and the squarer edges making this appear beefier than it is.

The reality is the complaints are truly pathetic. This notebook fixes practically every complaint of the 2016 design. The response is simply proof Apple fans love only one thing more than Apple, complaining!

Reading the posts it's seems like there is a growing market for 16" M2 MBP in the tapered body style of previous MBP 15" with HDMI and SD card. Listen Apple make two version one with touch bar and one without and it could be 2022 MBP hit.

But... maybe rather wait unless people will get delivered those new ones and then maybe they change their perceptions again. You never know :)

The new Macbook Pro is the most beautiful design I've seen, especially in the side by side with them open.

It makes the old ones look outdated.

There isn't. The old MBP is inferior in all ways and it is the basically the worst received Apple laptop in history. You just have a few people here complaining because their old laptop was made irrelevant overnight (the people who wasted money on one in 2020).

Perhaps on the video/picture comparison there was 2017 15" MBP which is 0.61 inch thin but without HDMI.

I have nothing to add to this discussion, other than to say that watching that video, between the calming voice of the foreign speaker, and subtle background music, nearly put me to sleep... and I'm not trying to be a smarty-pants. It literally made me drowsy.

You are 100% correct. I’m not a pro but I will probably buy the 16” specifically for its screen size. I still think it’s clunky, thick and ugly.
And I’m saying, as shocking as this may sound given apple’s recent uses of the “pro” moniker, that you, the casual user with cash burning a hole in their pocket, are not the target audience for this machine. Those of us who are the target audience are very excited.

You’re basically buying a diesel truck because you wanted a bigger car, complaining that it’s more chunky and that DEF takes up space, and then sneering at builders/contractors/truckers/etc because they like it

I wonder if this thickness will allow easier upgradability. Will be interesting to see the breakdown from ifixit.
The promo images on Apple's website clearly show that virtually nothing about this machine is upgradable. Everything you might want to upgrade is on a chip that's part of the motherboard. Nothing is simply "plugged in" to the motherboard.

Except the new one is half a pound heavier

Irrelevant? Hardly....

Your opinion, but most beautiful design you've ever seen, really?

Outdated and irrelevent seem to be 2 of your favourite words ... did you learn them today?

Yes, I think some people want the larger screen but don't need the power of the Pro. Just the base 14" M1 Pro is supposed to match or slightly outperform the fully-speced 2019 16" Intel MBP. The power is off the charts. Not everyone needs that.

Next year would be the time for them to introduce a 16" MacBook Air with the M2 and a thinner design.

Wow, I watched the re-uploaded video. It looks so smooth and sharp! Beautiful simple design! I think you'll love it guys when you get it in your hands.

And the mouse pointer hiding under the notch, that's hilarious! So much fun with these notebooks already :-D
