how terrific that the Intel premium that Apple used to have to pay for those chips and thus charge us consumers more to cover it is getting dumped now that Apple is going with their own chips. I'll so appreciate the product cost savings "passed on to us consumers." ? Now where's the Apple card financing option to buy these new cheaper Macs? ;)

Still funny that people believed that Apple would pass on their savings (from not having to pay the Intel premium) to the consumer and give us more powerful Macs for a lower price ??

Instead they turned around and made their computers even more expensive.

Monterey now has the option to keep the menu bar on in full screen, although I found I had to switch full screen off and on for each app to get it to take effect. It works on external displays too
Ah that's really good the know, thank you :)

Yup. And those of us who never use HDMI now have a useless port back. Yay??! I use DP daily and welcome DP 2.0 on the TB4 ports. I only use HDMI for TVs which use it over DP due to patent royalties more than anything.
I’ve never had any interest in using Facetime and would prefer not having the notch but at the same time it doesn’t bother me.

That is always what Apple does with a redesign. Did they expect something else?

When I was watching the announcement, my first reaction when I saw it was "Whew, this thing is thick, lol" You just can't help but notice. I have a 2015 macbook pro and it's arguably better looking. Even so, I still plan on buying a slightly maxed out version of the new macbook pro next year. I have great confidence it will last me another 8 years. I've had 2 macbook pros and never had any major problems with either (and I use my computer literally everyday for several hours) Great investment.

Yep. And in the face of the prior Rosetta transition still somewhat fresh in our minds, I can't believe how readily we slung around "just flip one switch in a compiler" to covert apps. I'm not sure which was funnier. :)

I wonder if this thickness will allow easier upgradability. Will be interesting to see the breakdown from ifixit.

Some of these comments to me are hilarious

Too Thick:
Compared to what? Dell Precision? A Zbook? A P52? Literally *ANY* Workstation? Anyone in this camp need to buy an Air and move on.

The Notch:
Inexcusable, should have had FaceID and I’m almost 100% convinced gen 2 will and the reason it wouldn’t fit in this one has to do with the zone backlighting or the display gets too hot to run a cable on the rear of the panel for the FaceID camera system.

Move From Intel:
I still believe this is a mistake and I question how long Apple still stay on ARM, at least on their own. Meteorlake as well as Zen4 should match Apple APUs, perhaps not graphics wise but they support a modern PCIE bus that will allow for discrete GPUs that will almost certainly be better. Apple needs to resume eGPU support immediately.

Furthermore this new chassis would have addressed all Intel throttling related problems so I’m not seeing the benefit whatsoever. Where is SMT? AVX? Peripheral support? Hell what about ECC????

I would seriously doubt it considering the tight integration of the M1 chips. Perhaps the “thickness” (or at least the change to a more rounded shape) has some benefit in terms of improved airflow and better cooling at lower noise levels, but I doubt that user-upgradability was a serious design goal. Nor is it one that the majority of users really prioritize.

this new macbook is when apple finally listens to their customers. putting back the ports, putting back the function keys, making it thicker to handle the thermals, etc. macbook air is thin and light. macbook pro is thick and heavy. this is how it always should be

They can’t because they do not exist (at least widely produced laptops). Check out the ThinkPad P15 dimensions: 1.24 x 14.7 x 9.9 inches and weighs 6.32 pounds.

The Dell XPS 15 is thicker too: 0.71 x 13.6 x 9.1 inches. It weighs 4.3 pounds.

ThinkPad X1 Extreme: 0.7 by 14.1 by 10 inches and 4 pounds.

MacBook Pro: 0.66 x 14.01 x 9.77 inches

Weight (M1 Pro): 4.7 pounds (2.1 kg)

Weight (M1 Max): 4.8 pounds (2.2 kg)

It’s heavier than some but will have better performance, solid build quality (the ThinkPads are generally great and the XPS is fine), and more. It will run cooler and quieter (I’ve used the Dell XPS extensively and have read the X1 reviews).
Well to also factor display, speaker sound quality, the mics and cameras, battery life, running cool with not much fan noise. People complaining are probably people that just browse and watch Netflix, which just makes it a bit annoying.

So true! All these fools bitching about how 'big' the 16 inch macbook pro is, as if thats their only choice in apple laptops. They have several smaller and lighter options. Whats wrong with these people?
They simply are ignorant to what real work looks like. Most of these folks aren’t in the industry and therefor not exposed to machines like these for daily work. These are the kinds of people working in sales/marketing and use MacBooks as status symbols.

Plus all they know of Apple since they’ve been alive is Jonny Ive’s “lifestyle” brand phase where fashion designers ran the show not real engineers hence the false pariah Intel as being the problem. These people have never sat in front of a real properly built workstation. Now that Apple wants to go down that direction I can understand why they’re confused.

There’s plenty to take issue with these derives with the most egregious being the lack of ECC which is inexcusable in professional environments.

Time goes by, inflation happens... plus these are fantastic... if the price hurts you, get an Air.

All these examples are from just a year ago...

Amazingly apart from the height (9.77 in. vs 9.73 in. on mine), the width and thickness of it is still smaller than my MacBook Pro, so I'll take it!

People, these machines are not toys. They are for producing great products and earning a living doing it. It's not for games. Those that just need to watch videos and post on Twitter and that's all can get an iPad or MacBook Air for a lot less money. People who need serious tools to earn a living don't whine like 12 year olds about price. If you are an enthusiast that likes to buy professional tools that you really don't need, well you're going to have to cough up the dough, Apple isn't going to take a hit to their profits to make you happy.

This was all on the basis that they’d built a traditional non Xeon-SP configuration. The moment I saw 57bil transistors I knew these would be enterprise grade expensive. Hell the M1 Max probably has a BoM above the RTX3090 and has to cost at least $1k by itself to package. Not to mention display costs and RnD.
