I honestly almost can't believe the support this horrible decision has received. It's INCONVENIENT. it really is that simple. It's a loss, for no real reason, of major convenience. Aux in cars. Headphones without charging. Charging and headphones separately. The list goes on and on. I don't want to use Bluetooth. Ever. I never have and I most likely never will. Millions upon millions also do not. This change is not needed. The list of cons far outweigh a small increase in battery life and phone thickness. What is wrong with you all?
If you don't want to use Bluetooth that's your choice . All I ever use my 3.5 headphone Jack for is with the buds so if it's now just wireless my daily usage doesn't change at all.

Charging while listening to music? Seems pointless to me. Why would anybody need to?

If it makes the phone far louder could care less if it's there or not. Better to have wireless earbuds than the annoying wires that you have to deal with now

Well stated.

But there are already rumors that the mechanical homebutton and silent switch will disappear.
I know, my point is...It IS up to Apple. You said "if it were put to Apple they would...". The market doesn't determine what comes next with smartphones. Apple does. Apple tells the world what it wants, before the world even knows it wants it.

Looks like my iPhone 6 will still be the best iPhone during the next 2 years, I'm fine with that.
It already hasn't been the best iPhone for nearly a year. Nice try though.

I think it looks pretty good, I don't get why the camera bump bothers so many people. As long as they include an adapter for the headphones I'll be happy (more thinking about the 2017 iPhone, I'm not planning on getting this year's model). Seems increasingly likely that this is the design for this year even though people continue to deny it.

Why the wart bother so many people ? because I am paying $1000 for a phone and I expect it to be perfect. the phone should be 1mm thicker but flush, smooth like great design should. Tim are Jony are both 2 tools, they should be replaced asap, their time has passed.

Lol at anybody still saying if you don't want to use Bluetooth that's your choice. As if Bluetooth is some tech standard that everyone has adopted to, it's toolish and unnecessary to me. I don't need it. I won't invest in it. How can you honestly defend Apple removing an industry standard? Don't you see how absurd that is?

You guys are missing the fact that there are dual speaker grills which mean stereo sound/louder speaker output. Ill ditch the 55 year old head phone jack ANY day for that. Get a $30 adapter which won't be included and call it a day, this is an Apple iPhone, these types of feature deletes and enhancements are expected and much needed to move forward in tech.

And then forget that adapter/headphones when you leave the house and go out of town. The convenience of being able to pick up a cheap 5 dollar pair of 3.5 mm jack headphones at any convenience store will be gone.

thats your own damn fault for forgetting them then..why be forced to waste money because you couldn't put something in your bag?

As long as we're moving the digital audio conversion outside the phone, why not move imaging out of the phone? Cameras all have wifi built in now to communicate with the phone wirelessly. Apple clearly can't design a phone with a flush camera lens, so how are they going to keep making the phone thinner without removing the camera? Lenses are a technology that is 2700 years old, I say GOOD RIDDANCE. it's time someone shook things up by removing the feature altogether and forcing the consumer to buy external solutions. 360 degree cameras will be the future anyway and you all are wasting your time with the camera built into the iPhone. Don't fight progress! Sure it's inconvenient in the short term, but one day, when you're walking around with your messenger bag full of iPhone parts/adaptors that all speak to each other wirelessly, you'll say, "How did I ever live with a phone that wasn't a pile of external parts just to accomplish what used to be a single device?"

/s

Hardly a joke though... The Mac Pro is now a mess of external devices.

You're saying this because if you've ever forgotten your Lightning or your 30-pin cable, you weren't able to easily find a replacement?

There was a time when the 30-pin docking cable was easier to find than a USB cord. That's the power of over half a billion Apple customers using iOS devices.

I would be stunned to find that once the 3.5mm Jack is removed that cheap, Chinese made Lightning earbuds won't be available someplace convenient in the event you forget your headphones on a trip. They may not be $5, but I'll bet they won't be more than $10. But then again, that's the price of convenience. And over time, the price will come down -- there was a time when there was no such thing as a pair of $5 headphones anywhere.

you are tired and boring. Industry standards mean nothing to me. Apple creates industry standards. 1 billion iOS devices. Who is in control? Not the rest of the market I can promise you that

Agreed!

1mm thicker = flush lens, we keep the 3.5mm jack and guess what, we could get more battery life. Sounds good to me, but Apple is on some kind of religious/cult quest to shave fractions of a mm ... I think economists call it the point of diminishing returns.

Samsung is very narrowly behind Apple now, actually. And last I had read, their customer retention rates who are likely to upgrade within Samsung is also within a few points of Apple, in the 80%'s. Also headphones extend to far greater things than phones. Car jacks. CD players. Televisions. Etc. etc. not everyone is going to want Bluetooth, and not everybody will want to be forced to carry around both, it's a horrible decision ...

People must have bigger problems if listening to music kills your battery that fast

some people do work for a living outside of an office environment, away from a means to charge phone. I get home and phone is at 5-10%, I'll want to charge it so it is ready for next day and sometimes I may want to relax and fall asleep to some music while it is charging.

Of course it is, I'm not perfect. No one is forcing anything but I'd rather shell out a few bucks for a pair of cheap headphones if I so happen to forget mine than go without on a plane.

So i'm guessing this is a big deal for you thats fine and I get that given the reasons you have stated. You sticking with the iphone then long term with your current phone or looking at other options?

Try streaming movies to your phone off Wifi on a long flight. Don't worry though, if the battery dies, just unplug your lightning headphones and plug into the in-flight entertainment's 3.5mm... Oh.

On another note, I work in both publishing and filmmaking. The executives I know in these industries carry around multiple battery cases and external batteries because they are always on the phone, usually through wired headphones with a mic. I've seen a guy take out 4 Mophie cases to find one with juice.

I do food photography for cookbooks. Sometimes my shoots are 16 hours long and I stream podcasts as I cook/style/photograph all day. The second half of the day I've got a battery pack in one pocket, the phone in the other. I own Sony Lightning headphones, but I haven't connected the lightning cable in months and this is one of the reasons. (Also because they require charging for Lightning use. Also because they sound worse for voice when using their DAC... Harsh, sibilant vocals. Also because the volume controls on the phone and my Apple Watch are not compatible when using these $300 Lightning headphones).

I also do cinematography for indie film. My headphones need to be able to plug into my camera, my field monitors, and external sound recorders. I'm not switching cables in the field if I go to reference an earlier shot off Dropbox, etc.

This is no small standard here. I have more invested in headphones than Apple's ecosystem. Like I said, I even have Lightning headphones, and they're my favorite to use... through the analog output... As that is when they sound the best and work correctly. They're a version of Sony's flagship headphones, so they're amazing... The DAC was just tacked on though and is best left bypassed.

Yes that's exactly what you do. You swap your Lightning cable for a 3.5mm cable, or you slap on a cheap adapter (I wouldn't be surprised if airlines carried a few for sale). Or if this is an issue you travel with a hybrid cord that allows you to be ready for whatever situation you're in. It may be slightly more bulky than a single connector cord, but at least you're prepared.

On another note, I work in both publishing and filmmaking. The executives I know in these industries carry around multiple battery cases and external batteries because they are always on the phone, usually through wired headphones with a mic. There will be new cases, some with built-in 3.5mm adapter jacks. Some will also have Lightning pass through. If you executives are running through Mophies that fast every day, they're probably buying new ones every year anyway to maintain top battery life. Worst case is they buy a headphone cable with a Lightning pass through. Oldest trick in the book. I really can't believe people are still worried about how they will charge their phones while listening at the same time, and this is without even getting into rumored alternative charging methods.

You're using headphones that weren't ready for "Prime Time". When Apple releases their Lightning headphones, they will redefine the rules like they always do (having kept the best goodies for themselves), likely solving all the problems you currently have with your Sony headphones, particularly the control interfaces (assuming Sony followed apple's guidelines exactly and didn't deviate for their own proprietary needs). Not all Lightning headphones will likely require charging. To the extent they do, they'll be able to plug into the same battery packs you're already using for the phone. I'm also expecting a Lightning pass-through on many headphones allowing a charging cable to be daisy-chained through the headphones, if not a pass-through connector on the cable itself.

I also do cinematography for indie film. My headphones need to be able to plug into my camera, my field monitors, and external sound recorders. I'm not switching cables in the field if I go to reference an earlier shot off Dropbox, etc.

See the airplane problem. You'll likely have a cable with a hybrid connector for work, as well as a bag full of adapters for various things as backup anyway. I can recall the days when most field sound equipment had 1/4" Jacks, and switching between sources meant going from 1/8" to 1/4" in some cases. The solution there was to put 1/4" to 1/8" adapters in the device I needed to use, so it was always ready for the 1/8" plug. I'd think something similar here would be in order. A cheap 3.5mm to Lightning adapter left in the device will make that easy. I can even imagine a situation where wireless dongles on each device can be switched through with an adapter/receiver from anywhere.

This is no small standard here. I have more invested in headphones than Apple's ecosystem. Like I said, I even have Lightning headphones, and they're my favorite to use... through the analog output... As that is when they sound the best and work correctly. You are complaining that Lightning headphones you bought before Apple introduced their solution have a DAC tacked on as an afterthought. That's not Apple's fault, that's yours. And certainly cannot be used to judge what Apple is going to do, or what the options will be like after Apple removes the headphone jack. If Apple fails to meet your professional needs, then you are certainly entitled to go elsewhere. But the vast majority of Apple's customers don't have your unique use cases, nor your expensive collection of headphones. And common sense about what's possible solves many of the problems you've conjured up for yourself. Indeed, for every major port change Apple has introduced over the years, there are plenty of customers who can claim they have more invested in legacy hardware than Apple's ecosystem. And at some point they will have to choose to switch to something more stable or pay the price to stay with Apple. In your case, it may be a much harder decision than you think, if as I suspect, all major phone makers eventually drop the headphone jack as well.

It costs a company a $4 per connector fee, For apple to do sweet FA, When they get rid of the Port, they will have a complete monopoly over wired headphones for Iphone.

And by monopoly Of course I mean every single god damn company will be forced to pay apple their slice of the pie.

And you might laugh at 4 dollars, however times that by the hundreds of millions of people that will buy the iphone and be forced to either buy a new pair of head phones or a 50 dollar adaptor (I joke).....

Apple won't have a monopoly. You're forgetting about Bluetooth, which as I understand it, is what they would prefer people to use instead of wired headphones. You can get pretty inexpensive BT headphones today, so I think a lot of people will do that. Also, dont rule out Apple including an adapter for this model to ease the transition.

As I mentioned before, Apple doesn't care about these puddly adapters. Your point makes no sense - if they do this incosiderately, they will just make their own products less desirable and their services harder to enjoy. Both of these markets are far more critical to Apple right now. If, as seems likely, there is a transition, I expect for them to try to make it as simple as possible so as not to hinder efforts to sell more devices or Apple Music subscriptions.

Yeah also I can't use my $350 awesome headphones on it anymore I will need to get some crappy beats poop.

lol have you ever seen apple include an adapter to ease the transition? That has literally never happened. They just make you buy the $50 adapter.
