This is a bit disconcerting for me.

Why update the white MB first unless you are planning something really different for the alu ones?

Seems a strange move to update one processor and not the other. Also a price drop on UMB is out of the question.

Will they be rebranded? Will their price go up? At least we know SL is definitely not being released at WWDC, would make no sense to release new lappy just days before.

It seems that Apple has given the whitebook the "green finger" treatment- The white MacBook now meets Energy Star Version 5.0 requirements and is rated EPEAT Gold, compared to Silver rating on the previous model. Not that interesting, I know, but it brings the whitebook closer inline with the UMB.

I think what happens is the 2.0 UMB gets dropped and the 2.4 gets bumped to 2.53 to match the slowest MBP. A FW800 port gets added and the price gets bumped. I dont know if discrete video gets added because I'm not sure if the thermal envelope of the uMB 13" can handle it. If it can, then I'd expect it to get whatever the baseline 15" MBP has.

Then a 2.4Ghz white MB gets added for $1199 or something like that.

Perhaps, though me personally I really can't see another white MB being added to the range!

Also Forgive me, but I cracked up the first time I heard the re-branding rumor, and it's certainly not getting funnier as time goes by. I just don't believe that'll happen. The unibody macbooks will remain as such. If I'm wrong, and they do get re-branded, shame on me, but really, right now I'm just laughing at this.

But yes, I definitely believe the unibody macbooks will be seeing a spec bump of some kind.

@ OP: Totally unexpected, funky find!

This is getting as bad as choosing a version of Vista.

Choosing the right version of Vista for yourself is bad? Having trouble reading the checked boxes at the back of any vista retail box, to see which features each version contains?
Don't know what's bad about that - took me around 5 seconds to decide once I had a box in hand.

Oh wow, I just got a 2.0GHz one on Saturday! Can anyone confirm the policy of take it back to Apple to get the newer model within 14 days of purchase? Where is this actually written?
You're entitled to return it and get your money back within 14 days of purchase

From a business stand point it does to have just two lines (VS the "three" that our out now). You would only need to make two motherboards: 1 for the white macbook and 1 for the new "pros". There already is little distinction between the current unibody MB and MBP other then processor and firewire.

Why not just have 13 and 15 inch MBP's like they used to and have the white macbooks fill in the lower gaps. Almost like going back in time ....

Because it would alienate the buyers who value the 17" MBPs?

And because not all buyers who want a macbook want the ancient design of the white one, now that the unibodies are out.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, and alas we'll see soon enough what's actually happening. The theory still makes me laugh though, I"ll stand by my opinion that I can't see it happening.

I had to register just to add my own "arg" -

Bought myself my first Macbook on the 18th, but not from the Apple store. I took advantage of the MicroCenter rebate of $150 and they have a 15% restocking fee ... I am talking myself into the fact that it was still a good deal at $849 ... Of course, being new to Apple, I didn't know about the iPod rebate, but I can't really upgrade my 32Gb Touch to anything newer ... At least for a few weeks.

Awwh dangit! Only bought mine beginning of April, am SO bummed right now.......

No, wait, no I'm not. Still happy as I can be :D Barely an upgrade, have an external drive anyway. Don't think this should affect many people.
:) Same here, I bought in April 3rd, was shocked for a bit this morning with the upgrades to the "newer" whitebook, but then really, I paid only $800 after rebate, spent it on RAM upgrade & accessories; no ipod needed, no complaints, a bit regret, over it by now & sure am a happy camper like you are. So we're the 2nd generation new whitebook huh :D
Cheer.

how does the lowest end unibody compare to the white macbook? with the update of the white macbook, the performance difference should decrease between the two.

i am just curious. do i go with the unibody macbook with the faster ram and the better screen or do i go with the white macbook with the faster processor and the extra money in my pocket?

thanks for your help!

I have got an early 2008 model, 2.4GHz, 160GB Hard Drive. How better is this new model, in terms of overall speed, and general usability than mine.

Are you about pure processing power? Would the extra $300 be a big deal for you? Can you wait for an imminent unibody MacBook update?

The extra features in the unibody machines like an LED display, glass trackpad, and much sturdier, aluminum casing make the unibody MacBook a great machine. But, only you can decide if the difference is worth $300. If it is, you might as well wait until the unibody MB is updated with the same, if not faster, processor as the white MacBook.

How so? It's just a name .... The current aluminum MB's are essentially MBP's now. I don't see any difference re branding them as MBP's and keeping them at the same price points. If anything it's more confusing now having two "macbooks" : aluminum and plastic.

I would agree with you but the fact they just updated the old macbook makes me think they have no plans to get rid of it soon.

My only thought is they can't get the manufacturing cost of the current unibody MB's down far enough to get them at lower price points .. hence the white macbook. Apple likes having hefty price margins ....

Depends on what you use it for. I have the same thing as you (with upgraded 4gb Ram and 500gb drive though).

Subsequent macbooks are probably better at gaming even with the 2.0ghz CPU because of the Nvidia Graphics. Although you and I have the faster 2.4's, we only have the X3100 graphics chipset. Also, this new one has faster ram.

We're still in good shape! I feel lucky to get my 2.4ghz really cheap just before they took that option away.

Great, I already have 4GB Ram, just need to upgrade the hard drive. This computer is great in terms of performance, as it actually is faster than my 2 year old aluminum 2.0GHz iMac. I just do not want my Macbook to become obsolete too fast, as i hopefully one day want to put the Macbook in a trade for the then current Macbook Pro. :)

Ram got a boost too, it went from 667 Mhz to 800 Mhz, why not 1066 like the rest of the units, seems odd to me since there is not much of a price difference that you add a new fast CPU and bigger HDD, but you only bump your ram so slightly, this is one of the main things that make the units work better, the CPU is 1066 so why not the ram, it would only add about $50.00 to the unit and well worth the dough, also all their MB and MBP should all start out at 4GB I do not know anyone who doesn't bump it to 4 GB and they are losing $ to other memory companies for that.

Sometimes I just don't understand the Forbidden Fruit
