Why spend $300 more for the 2.0GHz unibody MacBook vs the updated 2.0GHz white Macbook? For 200 grams more, with a TFT vs backlit LED screen, you even get a FW port.

Because the build quality on the MacBook (non-Unibody is, and always has been, pretty awful). Those Unibody machines are built to last. Now if they'd just put Firewire 400 back in then I might buy one.

I think everybody should be sorry now, when they questioned few guys who started thread about an expected update on the 27th. Particularly a guy "newbie" who started a thread few days ago, saying that he heard from somebody who works in an apple store that a surprise product is coming on the 27th, and i recall he said "if iphone upgrade is a valentine, the surprise upgrade is Christmas". Thanks newbie for the info :D

This thread.

My source is a leader on the floor and has limited knowledge, however when asking her store manager the reply was "something big is coming. and i dont mean ooh new ipod big, i mean big. if a new ipod were to come out, that would be like valentines day. And this is christmas.

My initial thought was perhaps this tablet PC we've been hearing about? But i would imagine it to be far to early for that, seeing as how (as far as we know) its only been in production for a couple months. Then came the idea of a new iPhone or Snow Leopard, but these were releases already known were going to happen! Im fresh out of ideas as to what "christmas" is going to be, but damn am i excited to find out!

Might explain Best Buy getting these in stock come 31st May...
Maybe Apple will bring Bluetooth 3.0 to the updates to the uMB and uMBP?

I wonder if this means we'll see a speed bump on the unibody MBs. Its not a good business sense to have the low end cheapest model to out pace the next model up.

That thread said something major "like christmas". This is a pretty disappointing christmas if it's only a minor speedbump to a old model macbook...

I hope he's right and there's more to come, macbook pro speed bumps will get me in the apple store tomorrow buying one!

They're still calling the current unibody 13" Macbook new on the site, but maybe they'll bump the curent uMB. The site has the buy a Mac for college promo.
Yup, I expect come WWDC (if not before) we'll see an update to the uMB.

Expect a price increase in the UK when the store is updated. The exchange rate is poorer than it was in October (although thankfully is getting better).

Awwh dangit! Only bought mine beginning of April, am SO bummed right now.......

No, wait, no I'm not. Still happy as I can be :D Barely an upgrade, have an external drive anyway. Don't think this should affect many people.

They bumped the price up in January when it had it's last little upgrade. It basically put it back up to £719 after the price had dropped before Xmas due to the new VAT rate.

I don't expect it to increase this time as the exchange rate is a bit higher than it was in January.

Can someone please explain why they bump the low end- $300 dollar cheaper laptop to make it a totally better deal than a UMB?!? There is no difference than slightly faster FSB.
I so was hoping to get my UMB today:(

Do you guys think the rest will get bumped soon too?

This is a VERY interesting move. IMO it means the Unibodies will get updated at the WWDC, or they will get some features that will differentiate them from the White MB, in line with the rumors about the re-branding.... Hmmm

Aww Schucks

I just bought a unibody mackbook if they update that it will be a little disappointing for me. But what the hell is up with the price of the 500gb drive? I can buy one at full retail price for 125 usd versus Apples price of 200 usd. That is a ripoff even for apple.

The unibodies have to get updated...

My white came with a 2.4ghz processor and then Apple removed that as an option to steer folks to the newer UMB's. In 6-12 months the white will be back to a 2.4ghz.

Edit: I see some great deals coming from retailers on existing 2.0ghz macbooks.

Thats kind of an odd update. And it does make way for a cheaper 2.0/1200GB white MB.

If nothing else it reinforces how expensive the uMBs are to produce. If they can bump the proc in the white MB, but not the uMBs...

I really think things get reshuffled soon with the laptop models. Moving the "pro" boundary down and offering a 2.53 13" for $1699 seems to make the most sense.

I think we will see a small but relevant change at WWDC.

Good news! Now we know the unibodes are getting updated soon.

It's a good thing i told my girlfriend to wait at least til the WWDC passes before buying her whitebook, now we just gotta wait til it's available over here :D

Oh wow, I just got a 2.0GHz one on Saturday! Can anyone confirm the policy of take it back to Apple to get the newer model within 14 days of purchase? Where is this actually written?

Not to hardware, no. Not of the white ones, at least. If there is any stock to the naming convention change, this is it. I don't see it (mainly because there is no point), but we'll see.

I can see this. Hardware always has its own little events, software, well, we can expect something.

However, as tradition has been on the iPhone front, I can expect iPhone hardware this time.
