That's what I said when I found out that the PS4 is not really backwards compatible with PS3 [as Sony claim] and will not play actual PS3 discs.
And nor will the Xbox One, which is entirely understandable because they used a completely different processor architecture, hence the reason there are no X360 or PS3 emulators on PCs or Macs. The PS4 and XO are essentially PCs now.

Wifi expandable storage - I skipped to last post but have people talked about this?

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but I read the first few pages of posts then skipped to the last. Popular thread! I find SD card expansion irrelevant - I only use SD cards for my camera but would rather have an Eye-Fi SD card even for that.

Why have one SD card in a device when you can get an external wireless SD card reader, wireless flash drive, wireless hard drive, or wireless SD card/hard drive/flash drive enabler? All of these devices allow you to stream to multiple devices - Macs, PCs, Android phones, iPhones, iPads, tablets of any sort, etc. They all have WiFi, and only some of those devices have SD card readers. If 2 people want to watch the same movie on an SD card they have to move the SD card from one device to another, if the device has an SD card slot that is. With all these wireless devices multiple people can stream from one device.

These all seem like superior solutions to an SD card slot. They create their own Wifi hotspot and are fast enough for my needs, so who cares about an SD card slot? Never use em in my Mac, have only ever used them for a camera.

This commercial is nothing more than a last attemp by Microsoft at saving a failing product.

In a few months Windows 8 has sold more copies than Apple has sold copies of MacOS and OSX combined, over the course of decades.

Is that really your definition of a "failing product"? If so, what label do you ascribe to Apple's OS efforts?

Well...

• iPad Mini is $329, iPad full is $499, not $599.
• Who needs to zoom in or out on the home screen?? It just is for a list of apps and items.
• SD cards are useless for most people, and I'd hate to pay for such a feature. You can transfer wireless or with an adaptor.
• iOS 7 will multitask.

Once again, Microsoft needs to obfuscate and misrepresent. How about what you can actually DO on the Windows Pads? Like, what helps someone be productive or entertained?

I'm sure you can get windows 8 tabs for under $329.

The storage might've been 32gig, not 16gig...
Maybe you want more stuff on the home screen rather than wasted space for big icons?
Volume switches are useless for most people, yet you don't complain about them...
It isn't true multitasking still...

One again, Apple fans need to obfuscate and misrepresent. How about what you can DO on the Windows Pads, aside from Microsoft office out of the box? Like, what helps people be productive or entertained aside from Netflix, files, etc.?

It was a good advert from a humor point of view and the fact it upset people. Don't like these types of ads? Switch to PC.

Multitasking: see iOS7, announced this week, and the Side by Side app

ios7 multitasking:

http://www.apple.com/ios/ios7/

Side by Side app like Samsung's multi-window view, available for years on the App Store and perhaps where Samsung got the idea:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/side-by-side-dropbox-support/id386528623?mt=8

This does bring up.. what IS Apple doing for multitasking? Nothing. You would think they would offer some kind of multi app view on the iPad.

Windows 8 sales: supposedly 100 million? But those are "sell-in" numbers meaning Microsoft managed to convince resellers to buy lots of their stuff. Are they selling? Some are, some aren't.

Mac computer sales: 50 million since Q4 FY'10 then I got tired of counting but the graph will show you what I mean. This is a sell-through number. This doesn't count upgrades to Lion or Mountain Lion either, just new Macs.

http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/04/13/apple-macs-analysts-estimates/

Your claim, which includes the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and includes Macs sold with new OSes, full installs of Mac OS from the same timeframe, and upgrade copies sold, is therefore false.

In a few months Windows 8 has sold more copies than Apple has sold copies of MacOS and OSX combined, over the course of decades.

Is that really your definition of a "failing product"? If so, what label do you ascribe to Apple's OS efforts?

Source? That is a ridiculous claim.

And yet....
Dell and other Surface tablets are barely making a dent in market share. "Ain't nobody got time for that!"

The iPad, like the iPod, is iconic. Oh yeah, it's a damn good device that meets the needs of consumers.

The most sad part of all is that the iPad has sold more than Microsoft will ever think about selling. You just can't compete with Apple.

You guys are hilarious. If this was the other way- an Apple ad shooting differentiation zingers at Windows tablets- this thread would be full of gushing greatness: "how creative", "so true", "Apple marketing like it used to be", "genius marketing", etc.

I like Apple as much as any of you (and feel no love for Windows) but give credit where credit is due. They're making some punches in these ads that resonate with average Joes. Getting Siri to do the talking is borderline brilliant: it sounds like Apple iDevices envy Windows iDevices. That's killer marketing creative. Whoever came up with that piece of the overall idea should get a bonus or raise.

I know this brings out the "Defend Apple at all costs" troops but those with more objectivity should look at this for what it is: competitors trying to differentiate on at least some desirable benefits. If this gains some traction, maybe it will motivate Apple to respond by incorporating some of those advantages. Frankly, I have believed iDevices should have an SD card slot from the beginning and would love it if this kind of thing could motivate Apple to make that particular thing happen.

Competition is good. It can make even Apple take actions that at least some of us Apple followers desire. Finding fault with everything the competition has is a recipe for status quo. Personally, I'd love an SD card slot and real multi-tasking. Both would make Apple devices that much more useful. I don't want to go get those things elsewhere but I would like those benefits to come to the devices I want to own.

This times a thousand. I swear, I've never seen such blind and borderline religious devotion to anything in my entire life. You folks at the MacRumors forums really take the cake.

Compared to the rabid illogic of AppleInsider, this place seems rational and balanced.

By that rationale, I should get into the ball bearing business.

So the ultimate measure of success of a company is number of units sold? I submit to you, then, that Microsoft should stop making software and get into the ball bearing or hamburger business. Surely Microsoft could grow its unit shares that way. I know McDonald's is over 100 billion served, and who knows how many ball bearings they could sell - Unit sales FTW!

"I don't need it therefore nobody else does"?

An SD card slot would be incredibly useful in an iPad.

It's obvious why Apple wouldn't allow it, but you don't think it would be a good idea to be able to load some of your apps, or music, or a pile of movies, onto an SD card for a long trip? Or pop the card out of your camera to load up the photos into iPhoto (without the need for the third piece of hardware, the Camera Connection Kit)? Or load up Office documents to read and edit?

Interesting points. Not many people agree with them. I don't think the zoomability of the home page on Windows 8 is anything but a design choice. Microsoft's problem is they don't make any.

Someone tell Microsoft's Advertising department to actually talk to each other to send a clear message...

When samsung has ads like this for Galaxy where they say it's better than iPhone and having the Windows phone ont eh sidelines not taking part in a fight of who's phone is better because they "know theirs is"

But then when it comes to tablets, they do the very same thing? Personally, ads like this are embarrassing for the companies that create them. It shows that they know they aren't as good and instead of fixing the product or making it better, they try to find gimmicky features that are crap and point that it's better with slimeball marketing.

Let's be real. 99% of the world uses a smartphone (most of them iPhones) for taking photos with a photo syncing service a la 'Camera Upload' in Dropbox. With iDevices you have Photo Stream. Zero work has to be done to transfer those photos.

For the 1 time a year your average user needs to plug in an SD card into an iPad, there is the Camera Kit. Don't make it seem like it's impossible.

Yes but apple greed at wanting to charge $$$$ for storage has pushed away the gullable trend-followers: the iPhone crowd that came to apple simply because it was the new hip cool thing. Apple became conceited and as purse string ballooned, gluttony ensued! The only main reason they wont allow sd storage nor usb is they want you to pay more $$ for larger storage - where on certain android devices, you can opt to have a lower storage device, with the luxury of popping in a SD card if one is travelling away from home. PS streaming large chunks of data, especially abroad is really not feasible in the real world!

I own everything apple - however, the only way i find my ipad useful is beacuse it is JB; thinking of getting the note 3 next; love the macbooks and imacs though!

Who the **** wants to zoom in the home screen? It's all gimmicks except for the SD card. That's a legitimate feature that the iPad could use, and not for cameras but for upgrading the storage.

Exactly... It's the same with most products that rival apple

Last I checked, they were making fun of Apple-Android fanboy warism. That was making fun of Apple (and Google), as is this. I don't think anyone defends Microsoft like fanboys of the other two OSes. I might be wrong but I haven't seen it.

The ad is for the Surface tablet, not Windows 8.

would win me over if I had any Microsoft experience. however i have all mac and iPhone apps so it would be stupid for me to switch right now. Cheaper and "newer", iOS has been the same for so long.

hahaha....awesome ad.
funny and effective at the same time, good to see the apple-microsoft rivalry in TV ads.

No because they really do not make sense. SD Cards are just one more thing to keep up with. The smaller they get the harder it is to do so. Now you have to also keep up with an adapter to make your SD work in the tiny Micro port. It would make more sense to have a camera adapter that can access your camera directly. Now many cameras have wifi and iOS software so there is no need to connect it at all. The other manufactures do this in order to check a line on the list. If there were a great demand for it, Apple would have included it. They would know from all of the camera kits being sold. The space is better used as is and leave the option for those that want it.

You're talking nonsense! There are millions and millions of DSLR cameras on the market, millions sold every year, to millions of photographers, and all utilise SD cards. There are also numerous photo apps and many people that use iPads to load images from cameras via the SD card adaptor ... but more likely MANY more if it had a slot built in like 99% of all other tablets (because as I said above, Apple don't include one PURELY because they can make more money 'forcing' people to pay more for iPads with more memory and/or buy their adapter ... It's NOTHING to do with lack of demand, as proved by every other manufacturer including them!!!)

Your post is just another of those 'I don't use it so no one else does (or should!) so it shouldnt be included' ... In other words, selfish and thoughtless and without merit because not all are like you!!!

I bet to you my signature is the equivalent to me insulting somebody's religion. It still amazes me that I saved over $1,000 for essentially more powerful hardware.

You mean you chose to not spend a $1000 to upgrade to a computer with a better OS with fewer viruses, better build quality, better customer support with a larger accessory base and more consistent day to day operation.

That's fine. Those improvements aren't worth $1000 to everyone.

I personally would rather have a football field made of AstroTurf than have the lawn mower with the biggest engine
