Pretty sad state of affairs that the police need to ask them since they can't deter crime. lol

That said, I was able to retrieve my son's e-bike because of Airtags. I located it, called the police, and got it back. Unfortunately could not get the robber.

The electronics in the car don't use a lithium ion battery.
You do you...seems like an odd concern lol. We put one in my Grandfathers car to keep track of him (starting to have memory problems but still loves to drive) and it's been fine for the last year and a half through 100 degree days and -20 degree Michigan Winters.

Yes

Lived there, and not even the dirty sketchy city, was a victim to felony level larceny, the police couldn’t be bothered, and I had the case on a platter, emails from all parties, I was working for a lawfirm at the time and even they said it’s clear cut, cops just said “that’s a civil matter”

That’s about when I was onboard with defunding 80% of police

But I promise if I didn’t have a valid “inspection” sticker I wouldn’t make it a week before a cop would stop me post haste, that whole state is a scam, and “the city” is the epicenter

If NYPD wants you to do something, 9.9 times out of 10 it’s in your best interest to do the opposite

When my car was broken into and I had thousands of dollars of my possessions stolen, which makes it a felony, I couldn’t get one pd in the region to do anything, and get this, I had the thieves fingerprints. They could have made an arrest, recovered my belongings, some of which irreplaceable, and probably other peoples stuff too. But you know if it was one of them, their car that got broken into, there would have been a swat raid at the suspects house within the hour.

By giving out AirTags it seems they are encouraging people to take matters into their own hands as I doubt they’ll help someone unless they are famous and/or rich.

Is there a way to disable the sound notification so that a thief wouldn’t be able to find it?

500 AirTags is not a lot. It’s about getting people to take some level of responsibility and making a suggestion. Deterrence include cameras, crime prevention through urban design, visibility, communities working together. AirTags is a way to get stuff back, rather than a deterrent. I have been to literally thousands of break-ins in my career, and the majority of people say, "I don’t care about catching the person, I just want 'x' back".

If people want to deter car theft, there are ways to disable the car. This is about getting expensive property back.

Sure, an AirTag may help recover a vehicle - but 500 AirTags in NYC certainly won't be enough to create a word-of-mouth or newsworthy deterrent from theft.

I just cannot imagine that any police force actually wants civilians to be using AirTags or any gps device *where the consumer is in control* - to keep track of their stuff and calling 911 to give live (often delayed) updates on the location of their 2016 Hyundai.

Also, just a general rule #1 when it comes to free stuff. If a cop is giving it away, you don't want it. There's a reason all the police departments were giving away ring doorbells, and it wasn't for YOUR safety.
How many air tags should the police give out then. Zero or ?

I'm not suggesting they do or do not give them away. If the goal is as stated, 500 is too low to have a noticeable/measurable impact on actual theft - obvi, these are my opinions based on my logic - of course, we knew that already. But, apparently, it is press-conference worthy.

This would most definitely void the warranty. So, do at your own risk. However, voiding the warranty on a $30 product and giving me a fighting chance to retrieve my vehicle, if needed, due the thief having a harder time finding the AirTag is totally worth it in my book.

Classic car I spent years restoring > cheap AirTag

It’s simply ether marketing or something more nefarious

Just store the AirTag out of sight in the trunk or under the carpet where the sun can't reach. The average operating temps of the CR2032 battery is about -20C to 70C (158f), so if the car environment gets hot enough to blow up a CR2032 battery that's hidden out of sight from the sun then you have far more to worry about.

Plus according to Panasonic they do CR2032s that operate at -40C to +120C, so temperatures aren't a problem.

It’s no surprise the airtag is more popular than tile, given its integration with the apple ecosystem and the US having a high iPhone adoption rate.

This is quite the turnaround from 2021 when the police were blaming AirTags for car thefts. The implication is that although the airtag has received relatively little news coverage of late, it has nevertheless been slowly but surely gaining adoption amongst its users.
