I'm not suggesting they do or do not give them away. If the goal is as stated, 500 is too low to have a noticeable/measurable impact on actual theft - obvi, these are my opinions based on my logic - of course, we knew that already. But, apparently, it is press-conference worthy.
As above. Logic demonstrates this won’t reduce car theft. It helps in recovery of a stolen car. Plus this is as much about advertising that people can use these to help themselves. It’s not enough to have any noticeable effect on the 2 million cars in New York.

As has happened in this thread. It creates a conversation about it, and excepting those here who hate the police, it’s a good thing to have conversations about these things.

It’s no surprise the airtag is more popular than tile, given its integration with the apple ecosystem and the US having a high iPhone adoption rate.

This is quite the turnaround from 2021 when the police were blaming AirTags for car thefts. The implication is that although the airtag has received relatively little news coverage of late, it has nevertheless been slowly but surely gaining adoption amongst its users.
How could AirTags be blamed for car theft? I don’t understand that.

It’s a test. If it proves to be cost effective way to recover property, more funds might be allocated for additional AirTags.

This would most definitely void the warranty. So, do at your own risk. However, voiding the warranty on a $30 product and giving me a fighting chance to retrieve my vehicle, if needed, due the thief having a harder time finding the AirTag is totally worth it in my book.
Absolutely. It's astounding that someone wouldn't understand this.

Not sure you understand how AirTags work. They’re tied to your Apple ID, only you can track your AirTag (unless you give someone your Apple IR credentials - which if you’re giving the police you’re info than you’re just being dumb).

You can’t bind an AirTag to more than one Apple ID, so it’s not like the police could bind the AirTag to a NYPD Apple ID, and then give it to you and act like it’s not already bound to an Apple ID.
I am not sure you know how electronic, state-sponsored/state-actor surveillance works.

IC-level, PHY-level, or just even basic "well, we know the BLE identifiers for these devices we gave out and we literally have comms devices on every intersection and block that can sense the address in real time" is par for the course.

Snowden's leaks were 10 years ago and highlighted these, and 10 years is an eternity...you have no idea how pervasive and invasive these systems are if you don't think AirTags, etc are exploited left and right outside the Apple ecosystem/control. Apple's encryption is not going to help here, at all.

They may "just" be a police department, but I guarantee you the NYPD has the resources to do this very, very easily. And they've certainly shown the willingness/gall/disrespect for civil liberties, too. Not a good combo.

You can’t even share an AirTag with an iCloud family member, no way it can be shared with NYPD.
Dude, back in 2013 state sponsored actors were compromising phones (much more sophisticated, delicate, and hardened devices than an AirTag) at the hardware level, do you really think 10 years later state-sponsored actors can't easily do the same thing to basically just a glorified microcontroller?

Some guy in his spare time with zero state-sponsored apparatus did rooted his AirTag. I guarantee you your AirTag is "shared" with any agency of any scale that so desires it, without Apple even in the loop on that "sharing".

Let's not forget the NYPD is an enormous entity with significant links to US federal LE agencies and even the DoD. And they don't have the best record when it comes to civil liberties, either.

You do know that police aren't the courts don’t you?
It's all part of the criminal justice system. What incentive do cops have to pursue things like theft when the pieces of **** who commit crimes are walking free days later with a slap on the wrist? Crime is skyrocketing in almost every major metro area due to garbage policies in the criminal justice system led by DA's that are soft on crime. Chicago is a prime example. The loop used to be a safe place, I got engaged in Millenium park at midnight 10 years ago. I wouldn't even think about going there at night anymore.

New York Police advertising for Apple, LOL. How come they didn't advertise for Tile or other GPS-enabled tracking companies? A little sketch!

However, I do keep an AirTag in my car at all times. It does come in very handy. Love AirTags!
Because the other trackers don’t have the same abilities. Apple’s tracker uses millions of iPhones to anonymously relay its location while also providing systems they allow users to easily send data to the police when needed. Tile is not the same.

I got fed up with my family and friends constantly getting tracking alerts. Just about everyone in my kids classroom gets them also, so I can't put one in the backpack anymore just out of sheer decency to others. Apple ruined a good thing with that knee-jerk reaction to the 3 stalking cases that surfaced in the media.

Hopefully another company will come up with a good solution that isn't trying to white knight the .000001% of the population that is being "stalked".

Or...maybe just maybe, we could be tough on crime again instead of releasing criminals back onto the streets almost immediately.
Yea, my wife’s car got broke into at a hotel she was at for a work conference. All her personal belongings taken. A few months later they caught the guy with her MBP and of course, he is a career criminal. Got a call from the ADA asking if my wife would make some type of recommendation so he could get into some type of rehab program. So, basically, he’ll get into the program and avoid jail, then he will resume activity and just work harder to not get caught.

They could do their jobs…

You don’t see doctors throwing up their hands and refusing to treat gunshot victims because legislators can’t do their jobs…

Radical idea though expecting cops to do their jobs.

the electonics in the car like the radio survivie just fine

Until they rip it out, which happened to me.

Crime is skyrocketing in almost every major metro area

Annual government surveys from the Bureau of Justice Statistics show no recent increase in the U.S. violent crime rate. In 2021, the most recent year with available data, there were 16.5 violent crimes for every 1,000 Americans ages 12 and older. That was statistically unchanged from the year before, below pre-pandemic levels and far below the rates recorded in the 1990s, according to the National Crime Victimization Survey.

A minority are lazy and not doing their jobs, just like any workplace. The vast majority of police do their jobs for the right reason. But what do I know? I was only in the Police for 36 years. It's so much easier to knock them instead of having the courage to do it.

If you're serious about doing this beside to open it up and disable the speaker. Then hide it in a place that's relatively secure. (not the cupholder!)
