That may be the case, but you'd think that out of his countless staffers one or two would say "hey, they are holding a presser on Friday. We don't need to release this."

That's not a reason to not write it. Do you wait to hear what they say, listen to them just repeat what they've already stated, then issue the letter, and wait again for some kind of response?

No, i don't think so.
The letter might have been written a few days, even a week or so ago. Just issued it right now.

He's a Senator, his letters are written, then typed by someone else, then edited and then issues. I'm sure it doesn't happen in just a few hours.

I'd have to respectfully disagree with you. Sure, there is a process that a letter goes through before it is officially released, but come on... This is not a State of the Union speech we're talking about here. It was a very simple and to the point letter. I would guess it took no more than a few hours from start to finish.

Senators don't only deal in problems that are on a "world scale". They deal with the issues their constituents care about. He is probably getting letters from people in his state about this issue, and he decided to be pro-active.

You guys act like he should be flying around the world with a cape on. It probably took him 20 minutes to write this letter, and I think it's a really good letter. I'm sure he got back to all these imaginary "world problems" right after that, don't worry.

Calm down.

It's "sunk" effort.

The work's been done, so might as week just publish it....
That sorta thinking??

I'm not saying that's the case, just trying to be rational. (And giving the guy the benefit of doubt.)

He can't do both? How long do you think it took him to dictate this?

It's not about doing both. I'm sure it didn't take him long but what exactly is the point of this? What benefit is this to people struggling in this economy who probably can't afford an iPhone in the first place.

I don't care what side of the spectrum he's on. This was stupid.

why doesn't he write a letter to every other business that messed up. people are just going too far with this and its getting ridiculous.

dear general motors:

please stop making cheap cars that people don't buy and then asking us (the government) for money and still travel first class or in your private jet or not take a pay cut/bonus cut when you can simply call someone over the phone and take a pay cut to help save your company.

ps. we should of let your company fail for your stupid mistake.

love,
new york senator.

FYI, GM does not make cheap cars !! I'd rather get hit in an American car than in a Japanese car..Go get your facts straight

How is this any of his business in his position as a senator? It's a private business selling products to private individuals, it's not a safety issue, people aren't being ripped off, if they don't like it they can return it. I think he is just trying to get some free publicity and appear to be on the side of the people. I'm glad I don't live in NY with idiots like this.

Please, you have no idea what Schumer has done for consumers over the years and the great job he's done for New Yorkers. He's been one of the pioneers behind eliminating "cold calling", and sales calls in general. People complained and he helped NY'ers rid themselves of the issue. You'd be lucky to live in NY, it's a great state with great people with lots of pride for the great town. And this is coming from a native Los Anegelino.

This Schumer guy is on a roll. He's been a real trooper for consumer rights and protections lately.

When is his term up? :p

I'd rather he address more important issues like unemployment and this god awful economy.

At the end of the day, Apple represents such a minute issue. I don't understand what the **** this guy is thinking.

Have you ever heard of "Low-hanging fruit" as a work term?

Grabbing some publicity for himself off of this (and probably hoping it does get Steve Jobs to release more info) really took no more than a few minutes of his time, most likely. Especially if he was already interested in technology/the iPhone 4. If it took more than a day from start to finish to write/proof/publish this, it was only because of it getting emailed back and forth and being in a queue of other emails.

If the lack of jobs was such low-hanging fruit it could be solved with a letter, it would be done by now.

I love Apple products. The death grip issue has not been a problem for me. However, the senator is doing his job. Believe it or not, these guys are required to multitask. Just because he's protecting his constituent consumers does not mean he's not addressing other issues.

And, the iPhone is a big deal. It's an extremely popular device surrounded by unprecedented hype. Millions and millions of consumers are affected.

Schumer's letter calls for transparency, so the consumer can make informed choices. Nothing wrong with that. I commend his efforts.

His job is to speak for his constituents, and if they've written him or his office to complain about the iPhone's problems, then he should be commended for speaking up for them. Everyone always heads straight for the "economy/oil spill/war" red herrings as if those are the only things that these people have a duty to address. How likely is it that this Senator's daily tasks involve fixing the nation's economy, fixing the oil spill, or ending a war?

Well put.

Oh, so you know what they are going to say then?

Well, maybe Schumer does. Gore sits on the board, it isn't a far stretch of the imagination to have Schumer and Gore having a chit chat.

If Schumer was really concerned about this issue (which I frankly don't believe he is) then yes, if he is not satisfied with Apple's response then write a letter - heck pull them in for a congressional hearing.

If they can bust the balls of Major League Baseball, why not Apple?????

/sarcasm

Why wait to find out what they're planning? There's zero harm in releasing this.

Giving any politician the benefit of the doubt is your first problem.

I think BC this is huge and no one has challenged Apple thus far, as far as GM, the Government and Obama administration stepped in fairly quickly, and since Apple doesn't need a bail out and they handled this poorly as related to a PR issue, I guess someone feels the need to step in. If this is real it is a thought out letter, but I would need to confirm the authenticality first.

i think that a senator (or any politician) should worry about its state/city/country issues then a product that is having issues. why not spend more time figuring out how to make the state better?

FYI, GM does not make cheap cars !! I'd rather get hit in an American car than in a Japanese car..Go get your facts straight

your telling me that a cavalier is a better quality car then a corolla?
they do make a few good cars here and there, but compared to everyone else (even other american cars, ie: ford. GM has a big step to take in competing with everyone)

for all the people who are "happy" with their iPhone 4s, good for you ! but there are people out there who have issues with them and deserve the right to know what is going since Apple chose to be quite about it. After all, we all invested money in our phones thinking that we upgraded to a better device and don't want to be screwed!
Why Apple is getting criticized by everyone?? it is obvious: They sold close to 2 millions iPhones knowing the issues and decided to close their eyes about it and tell people to buy their stupid bumpers to fix the reception problems.

I don't see any problems with that letter either. But maybe his grand daughter kept nagging him about wanting a white iPhone or something.

Why wait to find out what they're planning? There's zero harm in releasing this.

You're right - no harm and huge upside.

Make no mistake this isn't for the consumers of New York, this is to get his name out there and to reap any rewards.

What if apple gives away an apple gift card tomorrow or *cough cough* decides to do a recall, do you think Schumer is going to go around saying "see, I was looking out for you" or will he write another letter thanking apple for being so open?

Apple isn't going to change their talking points tomorrow because of this letter so the letter itself is a pure political grab.

Are people in NY really this pathetic that they don't know how to deal with a product they're not satisfied with. This is not an issue that people need someone to do something for them, they're not being ripped off or scammed. All they have to do if their not happy is take their phone back to the store and get their money back, simple as that. Now if Apple was not refunding or AT&T wasn't releasing people from the contract then I could understand some government officials stepping in. I'm sure there are good people in NY, and people like this give everyone else a bade name.

People in NYC are not this pathetic but speak their minds when they have to. At least someone use their political power to voice our concerns since Apple didn't have answers to our calls or complaints. There good and bad people everywhere not just in NYC !

Maybe not but if I see something like this from one of my representative they will lose my vote.

Well said. This isn't something that consumers need protection from. If the product is defective, return it. Done. The only time the government might need to get involved is when consumers have no recourse against a corrupt company. This isn't the case here.

Overreaching big government makes me sick.
