Same here. Apple really needs to get away from its i[name] system. iPod, iPhone, iTouch, iMac.... It gets old and displays a lack of creativity, which is not what Apple is known for. (in general)

Apple is known for their BRANDING, not their creativity.

Among the issues mentioned by Keller was delivery of content to mobile devices, including the "impending Apple slate"

On paper or digital, what makes Mr. Keller think his "delivery of content, be it on mobile devices" is worthy of purchasing?

If it doesn't fly on paper, a bunch of one's and zeros is going to change that?...

The Times cannot exist on its name alone... The "story lines" the NYT decides to report and those it chooses to ignore may fare well in New York and LA, but it seems not so much for middle America, and with lower subscriptions, the less ad rates they can charge, the less money they take in, the more employees they have to let go...

But I hear Rush Limbaugh's radio show is doing well with its ad rates and sponsors for the "delivery of content"... Any correlation, I wonder? Hhmmm...

this seems to me little more than someone who like us fully expects an apple tablet to come out, but really has no definitive knowledge of such a product. i've said it before, but apple has mastered the art of spreading false information to cover up what's really going on.

Apple is known for their BRANDING, not their creativity.

exactly. those guys can brand anything, i mean when that silly little beige imac first came out they got jeff goldblum to sell it. i remember thinking to myself this is nothing more than what i can get at dell, less because it doesn't have a cd-burner and yet it sold like hotcakes.

same with the ipod. i lol'd on that one, i already had my archos jukebox and it had 20GB's of storage not the measly 5 on the original ipod.

and then the ultimate uncreative device, the iphone. hello the prada phone was announced months before the iphone and looked identical. clearly the apple engineers just copied it.

If you watch the video and see how he's ready from notes/script, his mention of the "Apple Slate" is definitely intentional.

I don't mean to douse water on this flame, but I work with a lot of publishers, and they are all very scared of the Apple tablet. They're scared that this mystery device will come along and blindside them like it did with the music industry. But in reality, they have no idea... they're just scared... nobody has any concrete details. And they're all trying to position their businesses to be able to distribute to new devices, including the tablet they don't know exists...

so... maybe this guy has details that nobody else has, but I think he's just like all the other publishers... that they assume an apple tablet is imminent... and that it is going to shake up the publishing industry

I am curious to see this beige iMac to which you refer - I am unfamiliar with that product. Link please?

I'm sure Archos LOL'd too as their Jukebox came to dominate the market. Oh, wait...

Clearly the iPhone was well into development long before anyone saw the Prada phone.

Troll Different.

I take what New York Times executive editor Bill Keller says regarding Apple's tablet project with a grain of salt actually... there is real question of whether The New York Times will exist in 2010 and it is shedding staff and loosing circulation faster than most other daily newspapers! Moreover, The New York Times has a very bad habit of using unsubstantiated quotes for news stories and Kelley is among that group of news staff lying to make a story or using unsubstantiated gossip in a news story; his reference to Apple here is likely an allusion to gossip Keller heard somewhere rather than based on anything factual. Facts rarely make it into The New York Times.

you're missing the point. it's branding.

Btw, I'll call it now: iPod Slate

Any chance that this dude might be a bit confused and called the rumoured iTablet a Slate by mistake?

  1. I'm sure Slate magazine won't mind
  2. Nice to see that in the waning days of print media, Bill Keller maintains the iconic look of the newspaperman; loose tie, cuffs rolled over once or twice, etc.. :)

"Slate" doesn't sound very Apple-like. Maybe this editor doesn't have much personal interest in tech and said the word "slate" when he meant to say "tablet." Slate is probably his version of "whatchamacallit."

From what I gather in that video he's talking about how content will be delivered on mobile devices - couldn't he then just be talking based on the expectation of such a device rather than a specific one?

So, you'd bought an Archos Jukebox Studio 20GB almost imediatly after it launched, in the 19 days between when it went on sale on October 4th 2001 and the ipod went on sale October 23rd 2001?

By the way... The difference between the ipod and all other mp3 players of the time... The ipod was half the size of them, because they'd used 1.8" drives compared to the 2.5" drives in the Archos and similar players. And of course the innovative 'scroll wheel' control.

Tell me, how easy was the Archos UI to use?

Actually, "Slate" is much more Apple-like than the recent "iGizmo" plague, which has not been very Apple-like at all. iPhone? Really???

My boss bought a later-model Archos. She didn't LOL when we compared her new purchase to my iPod side by side. It was more like a SOB.

The thing gave her much grief for many months. She's an iPod owner now. No surprise.

Wow, journalists really don't think the rules apply to them—do they. I swear they rival politicians in corruption and are easily if not more disrespectful of privacy. How about trade secrets there buddy?

Oh, and catch up to the twenty first century while your at it. You guys are trying to resurrect a dying industry only because you were late, are late, to the party. For what? You were busy protecting your jobs. News Flash, the writing has been on the wall for more than a decade. Stop chasing shiny hoaxes in the sky and join the 21st century. Any eighth grader can create content AND format it for a "slate", iPhone, computer, or just about anything else out there. What you are talking about is how to maintain the status quo. Sorry buddy, your kids and theirs are a lot more tech savvy than you will ever be and they know how to access information for free. Your industry has not produced a value added product in half a century. Time to step aside and let the next generation show you how its done today.

Hey, but don't worry. WalMart and Home Depot are hiring greeters.

'Slate' ... I like the name. The reference made in the presentation was 'impending' ... I hope that means before the end of the year!

It would be another device that would simply open the doors to more people switch to Apple.

How about:

iTapplet

How's that for the worst name of the year?

Slated for release

Ok, in the words of Guy Kawasaki, there's going to be a "bozo explosion" up on this forum.

Slate, as in slated, as in scheduled, as in a tablet with no keyboard, as in you're all off your rockers and you've been slighted.

Agreed. Plus I am sick of all these app developers to call their apps "iEverything" which , because of this, lost its coolness. Its time for Apple to change their approach to this.

Ps. lol i forgot my nickname is iPoppy....just killed my own post :p
