No, they're right, Apple needs to put a more powerful cpu in there.

Maybe, maybe not. If they are intending something more useful than a new iPOS (no guarantees on that), they might reach the deeper market with adjunct capability. It would make sense from their standpoint: you can do a fair bit on the tablet device, but if you want to do more, buy the Remote Finder app to use it to (hopefully securely) access and/or operate the Mac upstairs while sitting in the back yard.

Same here. Apple really needs to get away from its i[name] system. iPod, iPhone, iTouch, iMac.... It gets old and displays a lack of creativity, which is not what Apple is known for. (in general)
There is no iTouch. This the general public inventing an i-name.

There are exactly three names for devices that start with i: iMac, iPod, iPhone
Compare that to Macbook (Pro), Mac Pro, Airport (Express/Extreme), Time Capsule, AppleTV

exactly. those guys can brand anything, i mean when that silly little beige imac first came out they got jeff goldblum to sell it.
Except naturally that it was not beige at time when all other computers were beige (ok, there was the blue white Powermac G3 which preceded the iMac a little bit).

He might have said exactly the same thing if he didn't have any inside knowledge of an Apple tablet -- because of all the Apple tablet rumors.

The why didn't he say "tablet" then? This guy took a largely unused word for this device and used it with some authority, as if he knew what it was called. If he is working with Apple on content for such a device, Apple would most certainly have used some kind of name for it (and not Q473) and its form factor. We've all been using "tablet" for years.. but here comes "slate". It reeks correct terminology long way.

It's my opinion that using another name for this device brings some credibility to this rumor. If he'd used "tablet" instead, I would have been more sceptical.

That may be, but in my experience most non-tech people refer to it as the "iTouch". I think it's because most people use them for so many things other than just music that they don't think of it as an iPod (and it also lacks the wheel).
Sure but how can one blame Apple for using the 'i' moniker too much if they aren't actually the one using it?

Devices, sure. But don't forget iTunes, iWork, iChat, iMovie, iWeb, iCal, iDVD, iLife...

The "iBrand" has passed its expiration date.

Calling it "iTouch" would be the most appropriate.

And can we please stop confusing "iPod touch" and "iTouch"?

Apple does not currently have a product called "iTouch".

Slate would be a cool name for the Tablet, or then can just bring back the Newton.

Why should cell phone look like a phone? Instead of trying to build computer into phone, just add a freakin' phone to Itablet via Bluetooth headset. I like my Iphone, but I'll give it up in an instant for the ARM Cortex A9 MPCore (like TI's OMAP 4440) in the Itablet form factor, preferably as a slate that uses bluetooth to connect headset (for cellphone function) and folding keyboard and Bluetooth trackball.

The iTablet already exists as a (cheep and chearful) tablet computer produced by (Taiwan listed) AMTek.

(Mind you apple did use the name mighty mouse for a couple of years.)

That would be too confusing having an iTouch and a iPod Touch. I'm still thinking the name will be either iPod Tablet, iTablet or possibly iPod Slate. I don't think it will simply be the Slate.

"Jaguar", "Tiger", "Snow Leopard", these were originally internal code names that were not meant for public use, but the leakage was too much with 10.2 and the tradition began. "Slate" may be a similar internal usage or perhaps the gray lady editor's personal predilection, but as far as Apple marketing goes, it is not a likely release name.

I hope it doesnt have anything to do with "iPod" in the name at all. iPod implies that it is mainly used for music.

I'm hoping the Apple Tablet that comes out is marketed towards more computing (like a laptop) and less iPod-like.

Well if it was an unintentional leak Jobs is probably throwing a hissy fit of epic proportions and chewing carpet in Infinite Loop.

He'll probably just trash the whole project now…
And the NY Times is definitely off his Christmas card list.

Why do people persist in pushing this caricature of Steve Jobs as a petty, raging tyrant? I'm sure he's quite opinionated and definitely a control freak but I just can't see him caring that much about this. That image of him might have been true in his early years in the industry but look where that got him back then? Safe to say he's probably learned some lessons and adjusted his behavior/attitude?

And if you think I'm just talking out of my ass, think about his public acknowledgment of the PowerMac G5 slip up (the "premature specification" joke.) He seemed surprisingly amused by that and that was a major announcement everyone was on the edge of their seats for. Likewise, we didn't hear of any freak outs about the infamous iMac reveal on the Time website.

I think this stuff happens and I'm pretty sure Jobs doesn't get his panties in quite the twist some of you imagine.

Others have said it and I'll repeat it for a surprising number of people. Slate is just a generic term that has been around for ages that describes a tablet without a dedicated keyboard - touch screen only - which is what we are all expecting from Apple. He didn't need inside knowledge to use the term slate, just knowledge.

Slate = Upcoming Products

Slate can refer to "items slated for release", or a "slate of products". The guy could easily be talking about the "impending Apple slate" meaning a list of products which are impending.

So this might have nothing to do with the tablet specifically! :)

Slate would be a great name for such a device. After the oh-so-lame moniker "iPhone," Apple needs something more distinctive for its next device. The "iGadget" meme is growing tiresome.

If they name this thing (if it exists) the iTablet, I'll puke.

I think the iSomething is still a way better way of naming things, and more coherent, than what every other company uses, numbers and letters and fantasy names for products!
