Hmm, usually the iTunes store has been updated by this time already, so far nothing has changed. Maybe an announcement coming up today...

Blimey  ....
It is too! Downloading now.....
Downloaded. Nice new Podcasting icon below Library.... I'll have a play in a sec.
So that cuts 4.9 being a subject of the special media event. I think its looking more and more like new iPods. Which makes more and more sense when I think about it. Apple have never done (well in my Apple experience - all of 9 months  ) such an event for a computer hardware launch, and with the Intels out next year they're not going to do it for an PPC based product now IMO.

Has to be new iPods. And I've got the money waiting Steve..... its just a shame my nice new PB will be in a workshop getting a new logic board thanks to a recently deceased lower memory slot

Please check to see if there are any new features buried away in menus and preferences that might hint at new stuff :)...damn what a time to be shaped back to dialup speeds

Yes, because usually the phone is subsidized by the provider and is locked to their network. Another issue is that there is not a standard network. While Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM, and Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, they don't operate on the same frequencies (although Cingular and T-Mobile overlap).

So, for example, while it is possible to get a T-Mobile Sony Ericcson T630, have it "un-locked" by a third party, it will be crippled on Cingular's network (where they use the T637).

Thanks for educating me. :) I've always wondered why there are so many similar phone-models in usa.. (like 630 and 637). We've only got two different networks here, which operate on the same frequency and everything so that method seemed a little strange to me. Probably good for the different businesses but bad for the customers, so the socialistic powers here in Norway are good for something.. :D

Forgive me for being dense, but where the heck did you guys go to find itunes 4.9? :(
@

the front page sais 4.8, but click on download and you'll find 4.9

www.itunes.xx(x)

I just downloaded and installed it on 10.2.8. I actually had to restart my machine. I guess this means Apple had to do some extensive system-work for it to still work on 10.2.8 in which case I say YAY APPLE!! :D :D

I have one problem with the preferences, tho..

when in the podcast-pane, there is a button in the bottom leading to the ipod-preferences, where you are supposed to be able to choose which podcasts to sync. However, the only settings I get is those I've always had. I have a shuffle, btw.

Can anyone else do anything with these settings?

Just the new settings for the iTunes Phone... nothing else new as far as I can see. Was specifically looking for anything hinting a movie downloads, but thats a negative.
Hope when the phone is released its got a redesigned GUI as Motorola sucks ass when it comes to ease of use against Nokia and SE. Their design is getting better and better for the high end phones (RAZR, SLVR and the "RAZRberry") but their normal GUI is just bad....

Agreed, although the fact that this is called the "iPod Phone" means that Apple will probably want to continue the iPods tradition of ease of use onto the phone.

If they have left it up to Moto though, you can ebt your life it's going to one sticking great mess of bad graphics and incontinuity though. Those cats sure suck when it comes to working on the insides of a phone rather than the casing.

Seeing that new iPods were released today...the media event is looking more and more to be the phone release.

Podcasting support in iTunes was really the previous WWDC event. This special Apple Special Event in July is too announce iTunes support for cell phones. Much bigger and a bigger revenue generator for Apple. Can't wait!

I don't see Apple doing an entire event just because of the Motorola iTunes phone. Very interesting.

I do. I think this is going to be a big deal and they would like to get a lot of press as leading the charge into selling music with partners. It cements the preeminence of the iTunes Music Store as the #1 retailer of digital music.

thank you. as i understand the chipset already supports recording, and you simply reiterate the point that yes MD and tape can do it, but it can be done in a more seamless manner.

o and i wasnt really knocking the quality of tape as i was knocking the fact that it has to be transfered in real time...wasnt clear.

Totally. Record-enabled iPod would streamline this process quite a bit. Real-time transfers are less than desirable. I have recorded live audio with my 12" iBook (dual USB) but even at that size is a bit too cumbersome to take to a show. An iPod on the other hand... oh yeah. Perfect.
It is true that all of the technical (guts) elements are in place now for an iPod that could handle recording. A simple firmware update could yield an iPod that records 44/16 stereo - no prob (save battery life). I suspect some day we'll see an iPod that records... especially with Apple's Podcast push.

Anywho, carry on.

Again, please correct me if I'm wrong... but I believe that this is already possible, except for the stereo part, is it not? and you don't have to settle for 44 kHz, either. iPodLinux allows up to 96 kHz (or thereabouts), and I recall reading that, through some modifications to the dock, Line Level recording can be achieved - a great improvement over the level achieved through the headphone jack directly.

I realize that this isn't using Apple's iPod OS, but it DOES allow for more functionality than what is currently in place. It allows for gray level shadding (up to four levels), different font face used on the navigation, and more games (tetris, minesweeper, more added all the time), has a calculator program, and because its open source, it's possible to modify and update with more games, applications and features.

I do a fair amount of recording on my home computers (desktop and laptop), and would love to have the ability to record live with my iPod, and can't wait for Apple to make it more obtainable (and, dare I say it... allow for multi-track recording on the iPod, too - someday), but there is already a somewhat viable option already available.

Just my input on a matter that I may not fully understand... just relaying what I've come across...

Will be soon

Cingular is holding a 4-day Motorola Sale, and they wouldnt just do that for no reason. You dont even have to go into the hidden things in iTunes to find hints about the phone, all you do is type in "phone" in spotlight and theres a Driver for the phone as the Top Hit. If its this obvious, they obviously arent trying to hide it for a long time.

Could there be more than the iPhone? found these graphics in the iTunes.rsrc file
