I have recorded with both tape and MD AND center my audio work around my Mac.... No problems - and tape quality is great (MD compresses a bit).
..
That said, I too have been longing for an iPod that would record (at least) 44.1/16 stereo audio. My Mac can handle all compression schemes later (via iTunes, Logic or any number of audio apps). I think all the pieces (electronics) are in place, would not require the iPod to expand in size (at all), and there is a legitimate market for this. Just because some don't want this feature does not mean this feature should not be included (I could care less about Party Shuffle, yet have no problem with that being an included feature set of iTunes). If anything, Apple should include this feature as it puts a more creative tool in creative hands... which is why I use a Mac in the first place.

thank you. as i understand the chipset already supports recording, and you simply reiterate the point that yes MD and tape can do it, but it can be done in a more seamless manner.

o and i wasnt really knocking the quality of tape as i was knocking the fact that it has to be transfered in real time...wasnt clear.

What is this think with the US? You seriously can't buy any phone and use it with any operator?

Yes, because usually the phone is subsidized by the provider and is locked to their network. Another issue is that there is not a standard network. While Cingular and T-Mobile use GSM, and Verizon and Sprint use CDMA, they don't operate on the same frequencies (although Cingular and T-Mobile overlap).

So, for example, while it is possible to get a T-Mobile Sony Ericcson T630, have it "un-locked" by a third party, it will be crippled on Cingular's network (where they use the T637).

A note about recording

Please excuse me to referring back to a several posts ago...

There seems to be a great deal of negativity toward recording any sort of live sound on an iPod, and seemingly for good reason. I purchased an iTalk (griffin technology), and truth be told, the audio quality is just about as horrible as my families answering machine, after being submersed in molasses, due to the very low audio quality restrictions on the ipod (mono, 8kHz, etc). however, i am curious why there seems to be little reference to the alternative... iPodLinux. i came across it randomly online, and was shocked to see that, after installing it on a 3G iPod, it will allow UP TO 96kHz mono audio. i didn't believe it, so i tried it out... the audio signal is low, but the audio quality itself is worlds better. and for what i want to do (record orchestra concerts live), mono doesn't bother me one bit, because i'm only going to have 1 mic, and will be sitting in the center of the crowd, most likely. plus, there's the ability to record LINE IN audio, which isn't otherwise possible with Apple's iPod OS. there are loads of other features as well... why no mention of this?!?

here's the link to it:
http://ipodlinuxinstl.sourceforge.net/

or am i completely missing the ball here? maybe it's not all that i think it is for a recording solution

Just to clarify, if a program runs on a G3 it will run on Rosetta, since that's what Rosetta identifies itself as. Very few programs require Altivec, but rather make use of it when it's there. Photoshop et al run on G3s remember.

biscuit

That's why I said "Requires" and even noted that Apple has been telling us (developers) not to do that for the past five years.

In a larger sense, though, there is a good body of software that utilizes Altivec as well, and if you as a user are used to the performance of you G4 running such software, that same software running on a box nominally twice as fast may still end up running at around an eight of the speed you are used to simply because Rosetta reports itself as a G3 and thus all Altivec performance improvements are turned "off". While this doesn't mean the app won't run, an 8x decrease in performance on your shiny new $3000 machine relative to your three-year-old laptop is not exactly meeting customer expectations!

I definitely would not want to be running Photoshop on Rosetta. While I'm sure PS will be available for Intel at or very shortly after launch (Apple will make sure of that), there are less gargantuan apps out there who suffer the same problem.

If iPods were the same price they are now, but included any kind of audio input that would allow for 44.1 (or even 96!) kHz, stereo, uncompressed (or even possibly 128 kbps compression) audio recording, I know a lot of audio engineers, radio remote techs, small bands, TV crews, etc. that would buy one in a heartbeat!

Right now the options are: you get something like an iRiver, which is okay, but not great, for mobile recording, but just isn't built that great - for a few hundred; or you get a special compact flash recorder that can't record too much (4 GB max right now - and those cards are expensive), but is built sturdy and purposefully for on-the-road recording, but costs $500 and up.

Enter the iPod: $299 gets you 20 GB of recording, with an unbalanced 1/8" line input (or, heck, have some sort of dock adaptor for balanced XLR stereo!)—and have some sort of way to set compression rates and such.

Ever heard of MiniDisc?

Does anyone not think this is only iPod related? Given that computer sales have probably slowed after the intel announcement and that SJ said more products were on the way, isn't this a good time to announce some new computer updates or a brand new piece of hardware to get folks interested in hardware again? I was personally hoping for that half iBook thingy :D

This makes sense to me. the Ibook update is SO overdue, and it would simultaneously cooincide with the back-to-school market, which has had made good use of the Ipod/Ibook bundle in the past.

They need an updated look on the outside. They've taken the rounded look as far as possible, not unlike the old Ford Taurus or Toyota Celicas. A few hard geometric edges would go a long way towards giving it some class and taking them away from the look of a prop in Woody Allen's "Sleeper"..

I was hoping for a similar form factor but with lightly colored wheels in different colors than the light gray it is now. The flagship has always been sort of a one-size-fits-all deal, so Apple may consider that kind of differentiation to be off limits.

But posting on a board is about what I want!

yeah this could be an intel announcment as well, as an ibook, ipod announcement.
Personally im hoping for the new apple garageband asterioid.

Two words, buddy: Newton Two.

Seriously, if there's an iPhone with Address Book and iCal integration, wouldn't it sort of BE the Newton Two?

Besides the NBC & APPLE partnership I hope we have some better news than updated ipods, new aiport express and isight updates.

I saw on TUAW that a content deal was expected to be announced on "Tuesday" -- presumably this week or next -- with a major media company. Is there some kind of NBC rumor circulating?

Thinking...

You know what, it's kind of off topic but I was just remembering when who's his face, umm, Billy Gates was trashing the iPod and lifting up the everlasting cellphone. It's funny because now Apple is getting in on the action and Billy is going to be pissing in his pants once Steve makes his announcement. Apple is going to have some good stuff coming, he always does and apple never dissapoints me! (even when I'm doubting)

yeah, maybe that's how you see it, but for 70% of the people who buy an ipod, they'll see "oh, this thing records music?", then it will suck compared to a dedicated recording device, and people will complain because their ipod's recording options suck compared to their mp3 collection.

even a medium quality, stereo line-in would create cost and support issues that would stifle development on other iPod areas that would contribute more to the iPod user base as a whole, imo.

comments like these are ridiculous, the iRiver and other mp3 players already have line-in or recording capabilities built in, if there is a demand for it, and doesnt add significant cost then it should be added to the ipod.

people who want to use it will use it, I really dont think there will be an out cry that the recording isnt up to professional standards, its a frikin iPod people will understand that its a music player first and recording is just an extra feature.

considering that the iRiver is the podcaster field recorder of choice adding similar budget recording capability to the iPod would make sense.

I vote iTunes 4.9 (why not move it to 5 along with the rest?)
and 10.4.2 (its about time after weeks of rumours)

I was thinking about this today, remember the dave matthews special edition Ipod, what ever happened to that rumor? Its time apple stopped the U2 ipod.

Its prob been posted already (Too tired to read 7 pages.) but it’s too early for Macintels. I highly doubt whatever solution they are going to have in place for openfirmware is done yet. Add to the fact that the chips Apple wants aren't out yet. You can bet the ultimate goal for Apple is dual cores in their PowerBooks and high end single cores in their iBooks. Finally there is simply NO way in hell Apple would introduce the first Intel based system anywhere other then a MAJOR venue by Jobs. MW San Fran, WWDC, or Apple Expo Paris. *shrugs* Its a Jobs thing. So whatever is going to happen again it’s not going to be computer based. Whatever its going to be its going to be *Pod related.

And yet, an "iPod Home video set top box" would seem to be too large an announcement too (other than a MAJOR venue), right?

Actually I've pretty well given up on an Apple video set top box of any description... though it's the ONLY Intel based device I could imagine Apple releasing before next year.

Time to buy an EyeHome
