I know the rumour says "no new design" but with the increase in RAM, this is going to have to be more expensive so they might as well bump up the enclosure material. Give it a Mac mini-like enclosure. Aluminum has better heat dissipation than plastic, and Apple is already making the remote out of aluminum on an accessory so it's already proven affordable enough.

The cheap plastic was overlooked when it was a cheap device but not for $300+
For a device that's mostly invisible in my TV stand, I don't care too much whether it's metal or plastic. I suppose if the aluminum improves performance, but for normal use I don't think it will make any difference. Maybe if does local AI, but I don't foresee using that myself--we'll see I suppose. My only thing is, make it black aluminum. I like it inconspicuous while I'm watching my tv.

Remember a few years back, Gurman said a gaming focused Apple TV was coming? Were their small attempts to already making it a gaming platform already that gaming Apple TV, or could it be this?

Gurman has also talked about a ‘half sized ‘ Mac Pro , Extreme M-series., and return of the large screen iMac none of which have seenn light of day as released product.

Gurman has also talked about a HomePad ( a smart screen ) which likely is another path to a home hub device. More like Apple TV is coupled to that than some gaming first strategy. ( e.g,. An Apple TV box hooked to a TV is also an even buffer Home smart Screen ) [ and possibly th3 A19 Pro is more locally smarter then A19 variant . ]

Apple won’t supptress games , but probably not a top 2 fearure where whole system focus is that.

Yes it's for New Siri but it's also soo overkill for the rest of the ATV, but if it added Shield TV like AI upscaling for older content that would be awesome too
Apple TV is a home hub. The ‘Siri AI ‘ acts don’t have to be on TV screen to be useful somewhere on the home LAN ( local area network) .

Everyone keeps saying that Apple is going to maintain the pricing of the current generation of devices, but that seems completely impossible.

It isn’t $300+ … it is a $199 box ( the base version’s current price ). You are about $100 off and trying to push the price higher when ~ $200 is already $50- 100+ higher than the alternatives.

It's already $279 in Canada. With 2 to 2.5X more RAM than the currently offered box expected on the new one, it's a fair guess that the price will go up during a RAM shortage crisis, pushing the base model beyond $300.

You do realize they will spend a large amount of time discussing OS27 and Apple Intelligence as well, right? They'll want to show its features on the new devices, so what better time to show new AppleTV and HomePods that will be able to access it?

If they have already spent 1.5 hours on that, then it isn’t a good time . People’s attention spans only go so long. Until most people can act sully get their hands on a working Siri AI to start to form their own opinions all Apple is doinf
G is another dog and pony show on AI. Apple has been doing that for two years already .

Apple is in a “Where is the beef’ situation . They need to ship it and then talk about it some more after they have regain some credibility. After OS27 ships ( and macOS 27 ) ships would be better.

If the general judgement that Siri Ai isn’t all that good then they ar3 in trouble anyway and another event is opportunity to fix it. If accepted inanely well than can just press release ship it and don’t need another dog and pony show because utility is obvious.

Pretty likely Apple is going to get mixed reviews. Which means talking again later ( conversing so,e of some stuff again z) would be useful .

A19 or A19 Pro and 8-12GB RAM?

Add two USB-C where the ethernet would go.

There we go... Mac Neo for $349 in the smaller Apple TV form factor.

Everyone keeps saying that Apple is going to maintain the pricing of the current generation of devices, but that seems completely impossible.

Don’t forget that Apple increased the Apple TV pricing by a lot in June, +54% for the base model and +67% for the higher end model. That compares to the between +15% to +28% increases to various iPad prices that it made at the same time. That suggests to me that when Apple repriced the Apple TVs in June it wasn’t just to adjust for increased component costs (particularly RAM) for the current configurations but also in anticipation of increased specs for the soon (I hope) to be announced updated models so that it isn’t seen to be doing two price increases within 4 or 5 months of each other which in my opinion wouldn’t be a good look.

Collective sigh of relief for everyone waiting that it’s not the A17 Pro as previously rumored 😅
Thing is though an A19 pro won’t deliver much more than an A17 Pro for a TV box.

I guess it would make sense mind as the A17 and A18 Pros are already starting to lose out on certain features due to the 8GB RAM.

I suppose it’s just been delayed that long they have to use the chips they have in stock and the device will age better.

If they include a fan you will see drastic difference

It was “supposed to” come out a year or two ago, but got delayed for the new Siri. People didn't want a device with older specs. So even if it doesn't make much difference in practice, it still feels better not buying something that's already dated, and yeah like you said will age better.

gimme gimme gimme gimme

been waiting so long and every day i hate the roku ecosystem more and more
I'm not challenging you, but why do you hate Roku so much. Aren't they all about the same? Roku and Amazon FireTV are a deep jump to less expensive that an AppleTV. What more in function and utility justifies the AppleTV's higher price?

Non USA prices have all kinds of currency exchange noise in them. And Canadian prices was not the reference point I was using. '$' on a USA based site usually means USA dollars.

The base model is already up 54% ( 129 -> 199 is a 54% increase). The Ethernet version went up 67% ( so additional SSD moving up more than just moving up RAM. )

If these are somewhat A19 and A19Pro models could not sell in an iPhone Pro then although the cost of a A19 die is more than a A15 die. That is probably somewhat of a wash at the moment and gets cheaper as Apple TV goes into comatose update mode for another 2-3 years.

If the RAM was 20% (which is probably high but a conservative even number) of the original price then 60% ( RAM up 3x ) of original price is $ 77.4. That is basically in the zone of this increase $70. Apple can eat some profit margin ( 0.6% ) and still make money. Apple's profit margin on NAND was already huge. They could either take away free space ( dump 4-6GB into LLM model space and just leave less.) or incrementally update. if shifted from 5%->10% for NAND it is another $13 ; not going to be huge jump even if somewhat unnecessarily make it.

The large storage model already has a larger increase. The RAM isn't going up if that one sticks with A19. And already have a higher increase to cover the NAND costs.

If you keep the case the same there there is really no increase costs there. The costs should stay mostly flat there because not making changes (and adding costs).

Apple should be eating some margin here, because the Apple TV as a product is not all that robustly healthy. It is NOT a dominate device in it competitive field in terms of unit numbers sold. Cranking the price even higher only makes it even more weaker competitively for the core function. That is all the more worse in countries where the currency exchange is bad and is struggling even more.

Apple TV is a relatively low volume product so lower margins on it won't show up significantly in Apple's overall balance sheets. [ NOTE; if iPhone Pro only increases by $100-150 then no way the AppleTV is going up a larger amount. ]

P.S. Apple will continue to sell the iPhone 17 for years. So the RAM of the A19 and its RAM is still on a very high volume purchase contract that probably has some limits on the prices increase, because very large bulk sales.
[ iPhone 17 isn't even superceded now .. and even after Spring 'replacement' will be sold as the n-1 and n-2 iPhone for long time. ]

Excited! This is one of the cherry on top I’ve been waiting to add in. I got into home entertainment stuff earlier this year as a means to help entertain myself as well as others while they’re over. Seeing as a new model is coming out this year I’ve been holding off.

I currently have 2x Neo g7 43s I use one in each of my productivity and media areas as background displays, typically always running some kind of media for atmosphere and then upstairs in living room I have a Bravia 8 77”, which is exclusively for entertaining guests.

This is a high-end device. I think the other "killer feature" will be full 120hz support. If you want to live in the edge and force Dolby Vision, it would never have to switch modes between 24/30/120fps content giving it a noticeably better experience than the competition on higher end TVs (which is the market they are aiming for at the price they are currently asking).

Also, it seems unlikely there is a glut of A17Pros anymore with the success of the Neo and phasing out that SoC. The 2nm node is going to stay expensive so I think Apple is going to milk 3nm for as long as it can stay competitive. The AppleTV (with a core or two disabled) is going to be a great recovery outlet for those chipsets.

Really though, I just want them to release it. Whatever the SoC!

The Canadian Apple website uses CAD, not USD. $ is used for both CAD and USD. If you’re on apple.com/ca then you’re seeing prices in CAD fwiw (which is where you see the $279).

It’s also in alignment with historical exchange rates between CA and USA.
