I don't see how AirPods tie people to the Apple ecosystem. I've happily and without any issues been using my AirPods with my Pixel 2 and now Google Pixel 3XL. They work flawlessly and in some ways better on Google devices.

...AirPods, which are the most successful current Apple product...
Really? I guess there are many ways to define success. Here, I suppose it’s units sold? Definitely not revenue.

If they would price them at $99.00 they would fly off the shelves.

I saw that they’re selling for $239.00 on HSN.com! Who would pay that much for them???

You can get them for $139.00 at Costco.
$159 is an excellent price already, as you’ll discover if you compare the market. Many high-end wireless ear buds are twice that. $139 is outstanding. As this article states, they’re already flying off the shelves. The right price of a product isn’t defined by one’s budget.
Except W1 is locked to apple. Competition D.O.A.
Current pairing of nonproprietary BT gets pretty smooth, but the W chip is outstanding! Competitors will have (narrowing) room to succeed on audio quality (the discussion of which can get silly) and features.

I think the biggest potential with AirPods is in combination with Apple Watch. For the past few years people have become chained to their smartphones, this combo finally breaks that while still allowing people to stay connected. It already works pretty well right now but there is a ton more that they could do with the two devices together, especially with cellular.

AirPods refuse to stay in my ears, have mediocre sound and look ridiculous. Apple has a long way to go in order to improve these things. As of now, they simply see them as a way to generate more revenue because their lack of creativity with the iPhone is hurting them.

What Apple needs to do is ship a couple of different sizes and shapes for different shaped ears. The market for them is large enough to deviate away from one size fits all.

There are still too few people using the cellular watch on a regular basis. But in a few years, the market of cellular watch folks will be large enough for Apple to really factor that in.

I would be surprised if Apple did this considering this would directly affect their supply chain. However if they did, it’s a sign that they do care about users more so than now

I’m not sure about this. A cellular Dick Tracy watch is similar to the iPad. They both are trying to cannibalize their big brother (iPhone and laptop respectively). The biggest gain from wearing the watch I think are the health aspects along with discreet tethering to your phone. It’s considered ok to check your watch for emails/messages, but rude if you check your phone. Funny how the world shifts

Again brand awareness is everything - I see an android watch or in-ear headphones and have no idea which brand they belong to whereas both the airpods and apple watch are instantly recognisable. Well done A :)
And you see them everywhere, ...snip
Starting to see them everywhere recently in Japan. ...snip
I continue to be amazed at how well these sell given how ridiculous they look on people.
AirPods? Competition?

How do you know what's Apples' and whats not...

Likewise, if Apple allowed it, I would prefer to use Watch + iPad. But since I need to own an iPhone, I don't buy the Watch.

I hope that eventually we can piece together our own combination of wearable/portable Apple tech in any configuration that's best for us.

Unless they find a way to slow down my music, I won't be updating, they work great now. :D
In all seriousness about “slowdowns,” I’m curious to see how battery longevity holds over the years for a given pair. With all the pushback from many MR members onto caveman like myself regarding our preferring the big picture benefits of corded headphones, I value the earbuds I have that are 10+ years old and stashed at various locations that work as well and conveniently and instantly as they did when new. No need to replace every tbd years as battery life lessens noticeably. Some benefits of AirPods are undeniable but I’m awaiting to see sentiment holds over the years for the the big picture (and any ongoing replacement costs) hold with AirPods.

It's generally rude to be fiddling with a device at all though in professional settings its' more appropriate as it's a business tool nowadays.

I really would like a device that lets you step away from your phone though while provide phone function. It's a nice minute amount of bulk that can be secured variously for activities and it would be neat to get more full-use capability out of it. I still independently use my Gear S3 on vacations when I want to get away from things but still maintain connectivity. Ditch the phone and wallet and just go adventure.

No, if this is how you think Apple views the AirPods, I think you're being cynical and a bit shortsighted on this. I think that the AirPods are going to become a significant plank in Apple's wearable platform, along with the Watch and I'm assuming glasses. Now, I do think they need to address the issue of fit for more people and some improvement to the sound would be nice, but the look has never bothered me as they look exactly the same as their wired ones have for years.

Used to like AirPods (sans the fit, sound leak and poor microphone ;)). Got the Jabra's Elite Active 65t and WOW. Never looked back.
