RE: No 1080 support.

You have to remember this is an Apple consumer product that will be aimed towards the very average consumer - like all other Apple consumer products ( including software!)

If you start on a TROLL note at least make it sound good.

He wasn't trolling, he is right. Most of the TV's that are hanging in living rooms today are still 720p or even below.

TV's are appliances that usually hang around for a minimum of 5 years, so there are not that many people that would be tempted to replace their new TV with for example the google STB built in.

That's why I think this thing could be a succes:
  • Low price point
  • Usable for most existing, sold TV sets
  • Able to velcro to the back of the TV

Just like the iPad and iPhone4, this thing will be aimed at the average consumer WHO IS NOT ON THIS BOARD. It is my parents, sister and colleagues who do not care about 1080p or i or whatever, but just want to watch incredibly detailed TV and not have a fuss with specs and settings.

Plug this thing in, velcro it to the TV, control it via Wifi remote (iphone) and you are good to go.

Do you see which part i'm quoting?

I think this is mostly BS... The biggest laugh was picking the name iTV. Whatever journalist came up with that one really should have done their research first. Apple would never be given the rights to use that name in the UK.

Just like Apple would never be able to use the name "iPhone" (arguably owned by Cisco) or "iOS" (most definitely owned by Cisco), or use the name "Apple" together with music (most definitely owned by Apple Corps).

The choices for Apple are: Give $x to ITV and call it iTV, or give $0 to ITV and stay with the name AppleTV. The choices for ITV are: Take $x from Apple and allow them to call this box iTV, or get no money and don't give them the right. They just have to agree on the money.

Cisco owns "IOS," yet Apple somehow managed to strike a deal with them. I'm guessing that, as a corporate entity, Cisco is somewhat larger than ITV in the UK.

I'd say an executive who rejected say a £10,000,000 offer for permission to use the name on a little box, that is £10,000,000 pure profit, would have some explaining to do. And it's not as if having your name associated with Apple would drag your reputation down.

It is funny how many people think the name of a tv station on a tiny little island is going to have an impact on what Apple names the device.

If Apple is smart, which they are - much smarter than you - they won't piss of one off the largest commercial television content producers in Europe... ITV own media content and distribution rights worldwide. Without content... Apple TV, iTV, whatever they want to call it, is worthless.

It won't be called iTV - guaranteed.

Tell me again why people in most of the world would buy this thing ?

There's no content to be had from Apple, except in a handful of countries, and with the storage going down the drain... don't know, this device is totally useless to me.

It won't be called iTV - guaranteed.

I'll add that to my list...

"Apple would never kill off Classic completely."

"Apple will never open brick-and-mortar stores. It would be a disaster."

"Apple will never make the eMac available to non-educational buyers."

"Apple would never get into the music business. They can't legally do it."

"Apple would never offer iPods for Windows users."

"Apple would never discontinue the iPod Mini. It's way too popular."

"Apple would never create their own browser. They need Internet Explorer on the Mac."

"Apple would never offer iTunes for Windows."

"Apple will never make a video iPod. The screen is too small."

"Apple would never create a 24" iMac. It would be too top-heavy."

"Apple would never create their own office suite. It would make Microsoft angry."

"Apple would never offer a headless Mac."

"Apple will never merge TV with a Mac."

"Apple would never switch to Intel chips."

"Apple will never get into the cell phone market. It's way too competitive."

"Apple will never create another handheld platform. The Newton was a disaster."

"Apple will never let people run Windows on a Mac."

"Apple will never make Safari for Windows."

"Apple will never let developers into the iPhone. It's a security problem."

"Apple would never call something the Macbook Air. That's horrible sounding."

"Apple will never release a 3G iPhone. It's too power-hungry."

"Apple would never call their tablet an 'iPad'."

It is funny how many people think the name of a tv station on a tiny little island is going to have an impact on what Apple names the device.

Apple may just name it "Great Britain" if they feel like.

It's all about trademarking. You can bet your *ss that iTV in the UK has trademarked the name iTV in all situations (in the UK and possibly the rest of Europe and the world) where it has to do with showing moving images on a flat or slightly curved surface. This would also include this rumored Apple device.

iTV would and should sue if Apple would call it the iTV and the trademark extends globally. If it doesn't Apple could decide to launch it under a different name in the UK or the other regions where iTV has the trademark.

Apple has done and will do the same. Just try getting a landline phone on the market called iPhone. You can count the minutes until Apple will ring at your door.

Apple has tens of billions of $$$ in the bank.
If they want to call it iTV, they can buy the UK TV channel.

Ignorance and arrogance must be so wonderful. ITV is over 5 channels, plus help fund many others that are broadcast on Cable and Satellite

Apple would need to empty the bank to get the ITV board to consider selling the name to them.

If you can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080p you need to get your eyes checked. My wife can tell the difference and she's as blind as a bat.

The idea is good, but yet again another device that will only allow you to be part of Steve's world and nothing else.

I wish the sheep would wake up and realise how sad and pathetic the fanboyism is.

They would have to put a big disclaimer sticker on the box. Otherwise you'll have non-techy consumers kicking up a fuss because they can't find Emmerdale and Corrie on the new itv box they've just bought. :D

Without 1080p people are going to be very aware of the diminutive lifetime of this product. They wont sell very well because most people will just wait for them to release the inevitable 1080p version.

The 2 million hardcore fans around the world will buy it no matter what. Those who are a bit more intelligent realizes that an Apple product provides some value only after its 3rd generation. Then you get what you should have gotten in the first place.

All this is very obvious by now.

RE lack of 1080 support: Most people can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080.

Yep. And most people, like me, simply don't care. A DVD playing through my MacBook plugged into the TV via DVI looks excellent. Blu Ray discs have the effect of creating cardboard cut-outs of characters and animations. Sometimes, its good to have the image a bit more diffuse. Real life has atmosphere. So should films. A lot of people are fans of Blu-Ray, so I won't try to take that away from them. Is it higher definition? Of course. Does it matter? I'm not so sure.

That's your opinion. 720p might be fine with you but not to others with higher definition televisions.

"higher definition television" would 1080P, right? I dare you to see any difference between 720P and 1080P from 2.5 meters (which is the typical viewing-distance) or so. You _might_ be able to see the difference on 52"+ tv's, but even then, the difference isn't that big. It does get bigger as screen-sizes increase, but those uber-huge (60"+ or so) are quite rare. Most people have 36-46" screen, and on those screens there is no practical difference between 720P and 1080P.

The "average consumer" goes to the big box store and sees the +40" TV showing a Blu-ray demo.

They'll notice that the Apple over-compressed "not really HD" video looks like crap compared to what they saw at the store.

But that has nothing to do with 1080P vs. 720P and you know it. You are talking about bitrates, when the whining has been about resolution.

Imagine how bad the Itunes version of King Kong would look!

Yeah, I bet your eyes would just bleed while watching it

Guess what? I can watch normal DVD's just fine with my PS3, even though I also have a sizable Blu-ray collection, even though by your logic, those DVD's should look _horrible_ on my 42" full-HD screen. Yet, they do not. Yes, Blu-ray looks better (naturally), but that doesn't mean that DVD's look like crap.

Why is it that just about every Mac-related site has a whiner who does nothing but whine about Apple, all day every day?

While ITV are big in terms we tend to think of, they're still a small-ish player in international TV, Apple could quite easily buy the company with their huge pot of cash they've been saving up.

That wont happen though. No, i dont see it being called iTV, at least not in the UK, they may just re-brand it here. Its nothing to do with buying the rights to the name, its more to do with the confusion it will create with consumers. ITV is an established name here, people make the assumption that if someone is mentions ITV they are talking about the TV company, that would harm any Apple product of the same name.

For those thinking the UK doesnt have much influence on Apple, why then have they just built their biggest ever retail store in London? We're a tiny island, the second most populous country in Europe...;)

Easy, the difference is huge. I cannot understand people who cannot see it. My eyesight is pretty good, and as a photographer i suppose i may notice the detail in any image more than average. Still, it does not appear to be a small difference to me.

Steve Jobs, your hobby stinks!

Stay the f***k out of home theater business and give it up already.
Unless your goal is to turn Apple into the laughing stock of home theater fans.

No 1080p?!?! Are we still stuck in 2000????

Are you seriously thinking I would DOWNGRADE from my BluRay player and WD TV Live to THIS?!?!?!

:eek::(:eek::eek::(:eek::eek::(:eek:

You're not the target audience. Simple as that. Most people is still watching SD on their new flatscreen..

Re

I really doubt Apple would shove an SoC such as the Apple A4 which is designed for power with wattage in mind when power (electricity) is no option, i can Apple possibly either having another chip which they made whilst creating the A4 which will more than likely be built on the Cortex-A9 architecture with the full 4 cores as that will mean the Apple TV (or iTV) will have a nice 2GHz+ of speed and possibly an Nvidia GoForce which would adequately process 1080p video.

Just my opinion on the matter.

People should ask Nintendo how much the average person really cares about HD output.

Indeed. People should also check the back of their PS3/360 game boxes and look at the native resolution. You'd be amazed how many of the current gen titles are actually 720p (or less).
