How do you operate a touchscreen OS and apps without a touchscreen, ie, your TV? Will the 'iTV' actually be an iPod touch which mirrors its internal screen onto a TV?

As its their first product called iTV they could use this logo...

720p should be fine.
Most people can't distinguish 1080i from 720p anyway.

Yep, I rent from AppleTV all the time instead of renting bluray and having to fiddle with a disc. Unless it's something really techy and awesome that I might enjoy the added resolution (Avatar, Star Trek, etc.); but comedies are just as funny in 720p.

1080p will be in next year's model anyway right?

I have a feeling it will do 1080p. Remember this isn't an apple official press release this is speculation. If it doesn't I don't think it will be a deal breaker like some say. Most content that is over the air is 720p or 1080i. Blu-ray on the other hand is 1080p.

I would like to see it support more formats if possible.

Um last i check netflix Hulu stream in 720P and 90 percent of the tv stations stream in it as well so your basicly saying that most of HD providers have blown it.. come back and try again.

All of those are channels that stream to hardware which is capable of displaying 1080P (in most cases)... the providers just aren't delivering it.

From what I understand, it's not that this device could do 1080P and the content just isn't available... it's that the device is not capable of doing 1080P.

I'm sure the 2nd iteration of this will be able to do 1080P though so people have a reason to upgrade.

1080p is a bag of hurt.

Why?

A Camera? (a la xbox kinnect).
Could also allow FaceTime.

I'm guessing just an updated REMOTE app for your ipod/iphone though.

Best reply to his quote, took all the words out of my head and mouth! Guess 90% of HD content providers fails.....

That's not the point. The point is if this is true Apple again creates artificial barrier for no good reason. If other don't do 1080 or iTunes has no 1080 doesn't mean i don't have 1080. As far as i know it's still possible to add your own stuff to the iTunes library.

That's your opinion. 720p might be fine with you but not to others with higher definition televisions.

Actually it depends on how far you are seated from your HDTV. Can you tell the difference between 720p and 1080p on a 52" TV from 20 feet away?

It'd be nice if iTV were just an iPhone app. I'd like to plug my iPhone into the tv and run it, streaming content from my desktop. Won't happen, but it'd be nice.

Here's hoping Apple lets me trade in my $400 Apple TV that they half-assed for three years for one of these new doodads that might actually be worth my time.

ITV shows the iTunes Festival.

Nothing will happen without a previous agreement.

im fairly certain itunes is just the sponser of the festival not the owner or organiser much like the carling festival at leeds and reading carling pay to sponser for advertising purposes
itv the tv channel merely bid for the rights to show the festival so im doubting that any sort agreement will be in place.
the name is prob only relevant in the uk anyway so they couldnt call (if its called that) itv in the uk

iTV is an APP. Its a great little TV guide program that can easily program my TiVos and search NetFllix.

I am saying that they are already working together. It's not as if Apple were ignoring them.

What is going to matter more than 1080 is content and model. If it continues with purchases and things you put into iTunes then it doesn't matter if the have 1080 or not. They need Hulu or a service like that, possibly a hook into the major networks, and something subscription to compete with NetFlix and cable.

So basically it's a dongle (albeit one with a processor and memory) attached to your TV that interfaces wirelessly with your other devices.

I doubt it will be the case, but it would be nice if it could wirelesly interface directly with a Timecapsule or any external wifi hard drive instead of always having to go through a Mac & iTunes in the middle.

It makes more sense, really, than the current product.

No 1080i/p is not as big a deal as it sounds. Most streamed stuff, channels, etc. is 720p or lower. I would love to dump my cable for something like this, but it's not going to happen until the content selection gets bigger. E.g., my wife will not live without channel 6 CT news (no idea why).

Exactly because Steve himself said that "No one wants another box."
But hey, everyone loves a little extra Dongle. :p

Hard to believe that Apple would release TV related products without HDMI and HD support in this day and age. So will ignore this "rumor" and wait for the official release.
