How do you operate a touchscreen OS and apps without a touchscreen, ie, your TV? Will the 'iTV' actually be an iPod touch which mirrors its internal screen onto a TV?

You operate iTV with your iPhone, iPad, iPad touch, or Magic Trackpad.

I am a huge Apple fan, and I even have an AppleTV at home. But honestly, the amount that Apple has supported the AppleTV I really doubt I will buy one. Hell, I was really pissed off last night when I went to watch a video only to find out my AppleTV had locked up.

I am really looking forward to GoogleTV however.

Yep. 1080P or bust.

Despite my wanting to use this thing first to play music, it HAS to have the following:
  • 1080i support at a minimum
  • hdmi PLUS optical out for audio!
  • external and networked drive support - out of the box
Then I'm good.

I would really like to see support for 3rd party interfaces so folks could possibly add an El Gato style DVR solution, but I won't hold my breath for that.

That's your opinion. 720p might be fine with you but not to others with higher definition televisions.
Your opinion, my plasma is 720p and I'm happy with this along with the others who have 720p higher definition televisions. Unless you have greater than a 50 inch TV anything more than 720p is not needed at normal viewing distances.

Meh!

I'll keep my Apple TV's thank you. Apps on my TV? What do I need that for?

1980: "Apps on a desktop word processor? Who needs that?"

1990: "Apps in my web browser? Who needs that?"

2000: "Apps on my cell phone? Who needs that?"

2010: "Apps on my big screen tv? ..."

I really hope it supports 1080p, not because I'll buy one, but because I'd like to see widespread availability of HD content in iTunes.

I'm fine with 720p movies taking up space, because I'll gladly sacrifice storage for quality. I just want to be able to purchase my favorite movies in HD. I'm tired of 640x480.

1080P or the lack there of isn't the problem, the lack of secondary storage is.

Sadly I don't see this being all that great of a device.

First; it requires a great internet connection that is fast all the time. Simply put there are too many people with poor internet connections that would not benefit from this device.

Second; some things you just want to have stored locally. Especially those movies that are watched over and over again by your kids. Sadly I think the day is coming when we will be paying for our internet connections by the byte, so one will want to limit the use of streaming in situations like this.

Third; the device would be far more interesting if it could work from a local server. But then I have to wonder why it would be a WiFi device, for a fixed TV installation wired Ethernet would be faster. Plus it wouldn't hurt your WiFi bandwidth which is far better allocated to a laptop or iPad.

Lets just hope that there are many missing facts from these rumors. The concept wouldn't be all that bad if it didn't seem so limited right now.

All those people complaining that it won't play 1080p almost certainly already have devices to play 1080p content on their TVs. This device is going to be about apps I'd guess.

And for all those claiming 1080p is noticeably better. Yes, it is, but only if your TV is big enough and only if you sit near.

See chart on this page:

Man, Apple doesn't want to give us what we want, but gives us what they want us to want.

I'm with the "no 1080p, no sale" camp. If you can't see the difference between 720p and 1080p, that's okay. Those of use who can are willing to pay for that, and we won't settle for less.

Apple will do anything to expand the App Store. They are making too much money out of it.

Actually, from what I've heard rumored, Apple just barely breaks even on the iTunes store. It's actual purpose is to drive sales of their mobile devices. In that respect, it's been wildly successful.

Perhaps in a few years we'll see 1080, but not until they can get file sizes and costs down.

You know, i thought this comment was bang on but then i thought, well if DVD's playback 720p and there isn't a single Apple device with blue-ray, why bother going to 1080p? It's a 'waste' (in Apple's eyes) since they don't ship a blueray player and those who have bought an external one are so few.

Now consider the use of 1080p

What do you all think about this?

DVDs are 480i.

480i? Exactly my point...wow, some people are really uptight about this when apple don't even provide a means or do any 1080p at alll!!!!

What a bunch of nonsense. No one's gonna buy a 720p device that only plays Apple Store content or streams from computers or nerdy NAS boxes. Could you imagine regular Joes being interested? I can't. An abomination like this would find even less buyers than the current Apple TV. You could give it away and people wouldn't take it, because no one needs another box sitting under their TVs and another remote on their tables that does absolutely nothing useful. As if ANYONE would buy a $99 device just to be able to access the iTunes Store.

And all the nerds already have a PS3, XBox, Apple TV or something similar.

Um last i check netflix Hulu stream in 720P and 90 percent of the tv stations stream in it as well so your basicly saying that most of HD providers have blown it.. come back and try again.

Fail. I agree, if you can't do 1080p in 2010, you fail.

My Xbox 360 does instant 1080p.

EDIT: And I have a 50" LED Sharp Aquos, there is a stark difference between 720p.

Without 1080p people are going to be very aware of the diminutive lifetime of this product. They wont sell very well because most people will just wait for them to release the inevitable 1080p version. Its not a huge request, especially not this far into 1080s established lifecycle.

come on apple, pull your finger out, if it cant run 1080 then use different hardware. it cant add to much to the overall cost to get it to pump out 1080p 24f videos.

That definitely improves my Home Theater budget. $99 with netflix and junk. Pretty spiffy apple. let's hope they can deliver + a few of their usual unexpected-yet-delightfully-welcomed surprises.

2010: "Apps on my big screen tv? ..."

It has been tried before and failed. People want to sit back and be lazy in front of their TVs. Not be bothered with some app ********. For the serious activity you have gaming consoles, and I don't see Apple competing in that area with Apple TV.
