I read through all of the posts and don't see one thinking/wanting one of the features I'm looking/hoping for - better AirPlay support. I'd love to wirelessly connect one of my Mini Servers to one of my HDTV sets or 4k displays for presentations and videos that aren't as laggy as the existing ATV.

I just made a deal with Comcrap - every single channel, including premium channels, and Extreme 150/25, for $110 per month for 24 months. I have my own modem and Tivo, so I won't get gouged there - Apple, you missed out on my $$$$ there.

As to further speculation: Apple? Please buy or partner with DISH, which has so many in-place programming licensing deals and so much NA satellite/terrestrial spectrum that's sitting on a shelf. Or, please buy Verizon, what with all of their fiber deals (installed and delayed - and they can fire their do-nothings CEO, Chris Christie, and CFO, Fran "Shamwow" Shammo) and the only nationwide LTE spectrum, plus the bonus of NBC Universal and all of the shill media companies now owned by them (AOL, The Verge, etc.), with the bonus I could use discounted iTunes cards to pay my VZW bill! Do that, and you'll still have tens of billions in the bank!!!! I'll send my Mark Cross fountain pen - Tim can use it to sign that new contract, and keep the pen!

I agree with you about Comcast but if Apple partnered with any TV service I would rather see them hook up with DirecTV. It's more sports oriented plus the programming is very good and straight forward.

Because it makes perfect sense to compare pricing in 2007 with 2015. Especially given the market and competition now.
But it *does* make sense to compare the price of a next-generation device with functionality we don't even know yet with a crappy run of the mill set top box?

I'm not doing that. I simply stated that I don't think me (personally) will find anything of enough value to warrant buying the new device. I'm not into gaming. And the devices I have now do everything I need it to. I really don't have any complaints.

Better be a LOT more than that if I am expected to load console (ps3 quality) games. They will eat 32GB fast!

I think you might be disappointed. No doubt the gaming will be amp'd up from the iPad and iPhone.. but I don't think it's going to be console equiv. I could easily be wrong. But I see Apple as boasting a HUGE library of games already available.

How can anyone say whether it's over or underpriced until you know what it does?

If it includes a graceful implementation of:
  • An SDK & App Store, including games, apps, utilities, etc.
  • Universal content search (and universal browsing from home screen)
  • Siri/remote microphone
  • 3-axis motion control remote
  • Ability to sync with iPhone/iPad as additional input/controller
  • Integration of Apple Video “Apple Live?” streaming service
  • HomeKit Hub functionality
  • Splitscreen apps/PIP
  • Universal Recommendations/Queue/Playlists
  • Video and app Handoff
  • Etc.
...then people will be clamoring to pay $150-200 for it.

A few months ago, I would have agreed with you - then ATT wrote a big check.

I opted for DISH because I'm surmising that Apple should be able to work out a deal with Disney, owners of ESPN. I also like the Comcrap buyout I posed because of their ROOT Network and NCB Universal ties. And, DISH has so much terrestrial LTE bandwidth they're not using it's just stupidly ridiculous.

Maybe an ATT buyout makes sense too (?) - Apple would own ATT, ATTWS, U-Verse, and DirecTV. I'll go one better - maybe CenturyLink, though they don't own any programming rights but they've got fiber and DSL just about everywhere in the US.

Regardless, an Apple buyout of one of these crap companies would also buy some loyalties and eliminate one or more crony hierarchies.

I've been saying they should do this for years. Make a $199 box that can do a lot more stuff and has some decent processing under the hood to run casual to somewhat mid-tier games. Then unveil a premium games section for the App Store. I'm willing to pay up to $299 for the right specs and controller so $199 is a steal of this thing can do so many more things. I just hope they nail the controller. That's my biggest gripe with the current generation and if there's an App Store it needs to work well with apps and games.

Why would anyone want to run ALL their video content through an ATV rather than just use either cable or satellite UNLESS they couldn't get cable or didn't have a view south toward the satellites? To put up with occasional spooling, etc, the content would have to be lot cheaper than existing content with cable, etc. My Dish $75 200 channel deal plus $25 HBO/SHO plus a $13 sports pack comes to $113. Now if I could stop paying for the 150-175 channels I never watch, I might be interested EXCEPT the channels I watch (ESPN, Pac-12, HBO and SHO) probably represent 75% of my total Dish monthly bill. IMO, this is NOT a game changer.

The TV service sounds very 'USA only'. Hopefully they can create worldwide content deals with quality programming.. That will set it apart from the others. Cut out the regional crap. Subtitle foreign content.

The ONLY thing that would tempt me to buy one is if the memory was greatly increased so that when I rented a movie the ENTIRE movie(s) would be downloaded so that I could then watch them later without any stuttering during playback.

I have an ATV 2 for 5 years and I've never had any stuttering issues.

The Wii didn't have to contend with capable smartphones and tablets until well into its life, which is one of the reasons people often give for the Wii U flopping. I don't see too many AppleTVs being sold for light gaming purposes, especially at $199.

Assuming that the ATV 4 will play all of uour current iOS games, I think $149 would be a good price point for an entry-level model. Not sure what a $199 model might add.

The article didn't mention 2 different models. It just said Apple was still considering whether to make it 150 or 200

This new version of ATV will have to do quite a bit more than my current setup for me to be interested at those price points.

Roku 3 + HD antenna + OTA DVR for $150 total does far more than the current model of the ATV. Add my plex server to the mix and I end up with far more media available than I can consume in 10 lifetimes.

Price does not shock me, hoping someone will work out how to get kodi into it.

I just want a native plex client and I'm good.
Me too. Though Plex Connect via the Trailers app works pretty well in the meantime. I'm not sure I'd buy a new one just for the native app since I have the Trailers workaround running.

The web-based TV service is expected to deliver a lightweight package of about 25 channels for around $40 per month.

Okay, an authority like MacRumors should know the difference between the "web" and the "internet". Web is short for "World-Wide Web", which is technology based on HTTP-delivered HTML "documents" called web pages. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Apple TV is not a web browser, right? HTTP is just one of many protocols that operates over the larger internet.

This will be an internet-based TV service using very different protocols. HTTP may be involved to a certain extent, but not HTML, right?

(Does this correction violate the terms of use of this forum?)
