A remote that includes too much... that's how i see this.

This is a cross between a tiny remote, and a bigger one to ful the touch-pad, but can no longer hold easy in one hand. The price alone is even more expensive than the 3rd gen, but since you paying for the touch-pad and voice assist only, its not worth it.....

Apple may think the App Store won't be on the 3rd gen, but technically, there is zero reason why it can't be.. Its only an software update.

then again, the TV service on the 3rd gen may just be as good anyway........ now, how about Apple music,,, there was no mention of that at WWDC, but it was still in the press info.

Someone changed their mind ?

Can anyone explain to me why I should buy this? It doesn't do anything a € 35,= Android stick can't do. I just want to watch Netflix, Youtube and Spotify, that's all. Vastly overpriced and I don't want to buy any Apple content (music, vids). Oh, I'm not an Android fan at all, MacBook Pro, iMacs and iPhones are the prevalent platform in my home.

You said it yourself- if you're only interested in 3 small things, this isn't for you. If you're interested in the types of 3rd party apps that Apple can draw to a store, then this would be more interesting. It most certainly will be capable of things a 35 euro stick can't do simply due to having more powerful hardware (faster CPU/GPU, local storage, etc).

I made the mistake of buying the third-gen Apple TV earlier this year when Apple lowered the price to $69. I'm disappointed to say it rarely gets turned on, and if it does the ONLY thing I use it for is streaming Netflix. I'll wait and see what the 4th-gen model can do before I invest upwards of $200 on it

I'm glad I live in Austin with Google fiber as a competitor. Time Warner Cable wouldn't dare add caps. Google would scoop all those subscribers up.

Good point.
I currently do not have data capping in my area, but you post made me wonder about the areas that have data capping, if they have more than one ISP as an option.

I am betting that if there is competition in a particular area, chances are there are not data caps.

For years my area was at the mercy of Comcast until FiOS moved in. Now when one ISP does something I do not like, I switch. I have switch many times over the past 5 years, The first being when Comcast sent me a letter saying that I was exceeding my data cap (pre-cap suspension). If it was not for FiOS being in the area, I wouldn't be able to do anything but bend over and take it.

who wants to browse the web on their tv set ? It will be just like the wii. and that motion remote is hard to use..try entering passwords... takes me over an hour.

Umm, isn't everyone going to see what the device can do before even having the ability to buy it? :)

Am I missing something, or does the $35 Chromecast dongle do much the same stuff? It streams Netflix, HBO, etc. to my tv perfectly. And it's controlled by my iPad or phone...
Why do you need a separate box with its own magic wand for $200?

And I LOVE mine, much more so than my Roku. We use it for everything except Amazon (have to use a Sony BluRay media streamer for that, talk about crappy UX).

Although my main love for the thing is that it streams my iTunes Matched music to my home theater and outdoor speakers. For that it's brilliant. I'd love an Apple Music update (I expect that soon).

I find that people who don't like it think it's either limited because it doesn't have Plex/an app they like or it's slow for them. The first will probably be remedied with the ATV4. The second has to do with the router being used. I used to get spinning loading icons and random crashes when it was on a flakey wifi router. Updated to a better router and both went away. It loads easily as fast, if not faster, as the Roku player on the same 802.11ac network.

What people don't realize is the Apple TV seems to get routed differently than other devices. When Netflix goes down on one device the Apple TV usually has no problem.

Okay....now your post is a little premature don't ya think? This might very well be a very feature-rich product and the price might easily be well justified. I'd pay $199 for a Super TV.

I would love it if Apple kept the Apple TV 3rd gen as "Apple TV" and this new model as "Super Apple TV"

I just hope that finally we can get a slingplayer app on the device..

the two prices points make me think there are going to be two storage options, for downloading and taking with you on say a vacation or hotel trip. Interesting, but with connectivity probably not too necessary.

A 149$ device with say 16-32GB of onboard storage, with a better more and 802.11AC and a faster gaming focussed SOC chipset is probably what we're looking at.

The media companies Apple needs to negotiate with to bring Apple TV closer to their vision will see this device and its uptake and reconsider. The release of this device with the added capabilities and ability to add the media owners as they either fear the march of progress, or catch the magic of a new outlet, will be a self-fulfilling thing. In this sense Apple should have released the hardware a year ago with whatever channels were on board. Within 2 years or so we will see the AppleTV ecosystem grow to near the original vision for it they had.

I have both. 6 Apple TVs, 1 first gen, 1 Apple TV2, 4 Apple TV3, and one Chromecast. I had the Apple TVs first, but wanted to play around with the Chromecast just to see what it was like.

I never use the Chromecast now. While I have not used it in a while, and things may have gotten better, I hated having to use my phone as a remote, and hated that it depended on other devices to use.

My Apple TVs get used a lot, and are very easy to use. While the UI could use an update, especially the giant movie list when linked to a computer, it is still very useful, fast, and modern.

Any Apple streaming service will be so cut down for the New Zealand market that it won't be worthwhile, if it is available here at all. Broadcast rights are so tightly controlled here, that even the NZ Netflix offering is severely depleted, so many New Zealanders use proxy services to get access to get around Geoblocks and access US Netflix etc.
That being said, if the new ATV has an app store, and apps are available for the streaming services my family use, I will be interested in getting one for my media center. Then I could re-purpose the Mac Mini, which would be a lot cheaper than buying another Mac.
It will be interesting to see what is announced. I'm much more interested in this than the new iPhones.

I know what you mean about the Sony BluRay. My parents have one and used to watch Netflix on it. It was horrible. I gave them one of my Apple TVs and used the remote learning feature so they only needed one remote. Now they can watch all the Quincy ME and Dragnet episodes they want without calling me first to figure out how to get there.

I can't wait. This is the sort of thing I want Apple to work on, not useless tech like the watch. Go back to when Steve Jobs explained by they killed Open Doc, and you seen an opposite philosophy with the watch.

I might be alone here, but I wished that Apple would spend as much time on the Apple TV as they did on the Apple Watch. Or maybe they are, but they are so secretive about everything that we would never know....

Unless there is an update to iTunes as well, which will allow you to stream .mkv and other file types. This will be of no use to me. I like the apple tv in some respects, but for me I as media evolved. I no longer have use for it.

I will be ordering this as soon as it's possible. And I don't do that often with electronics. The last time I ordered any electronics on launch day was the 2011 Macbook Air. Before that it was the 4th Generation iPod Nano.
