We watch the shows/movies and pay little attention to all the technical stuff. We are all about the content. Most of our archive was recorded on our Tivo - 720p or 1080i, and transferred to the Macs. Blu ray for people like us is huge overkill.
Watch what you say - you might offend the BD patrol here, and get chastised for not supporting the BD format, or revering it in the highest esteem, hence "the real thing." In other words, your preferences will be criticized and deemed irrelevant.

As much as I enjoy BD on my large LCD TV, I equally appreciate Eye TV and Tivo content in 720p, 1080i, on the iMac screen. Besides, the smaller file sizes allow for more content to be stored and enjoyed, all the while saving valuable HD space. To each one's own, in this arena - silly that we are looked down upon for having our own preferences.

i dont think thats the issue. the past few years ive spent more time watching youtube videos than i have movies. i just dont get why anyone would basically tow the apple line when theyre doing it just to line their own pockets at the cost of consumer choice.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I think too. I think Blu Ray video is gorgeous, but what I really value is recording a movie on our Tivo and thinking that my kids would like it, so I move it to my TimeCapsule so they can stream it to their computers or put it on their iPods for our next road trip.

That seems to be the value of having a computer in the loop. If I wanted to watch blu ray content, I would buy a player and plug it into my nice TV. So I personally don't miss it, but for those who desire it, seems like it would be nice if Apple at least made it an option.

You can call it "towing the Apple line", if you like, but I am really towing my own line. I like the focus by Apple on the content and the ability to move it, archive it, put it on my TimeCapsule or iPod, etc. That's what I want to be able to do easily with my content, and I will follow companies that make this process easier for me (Apple, Tivo, etc).

If you want to move a file then move it. Cut and paste is not move. What happens if you forget to paste? Lost file. We don't cut and paste files in OS X (though you can copy and paste.) We move them. It's part of the reason we have spring-loaded folders. OS X takes care of the user.

Want to move a file to a differnt drive without ending up with a copy? Drag the desired file to the location you want to MOVE it to and before "dropping" it (releasing the mouse button), just press and hold the Command key. Doing so, the green "+" graphic should disappear. That means you will move instead of copy.

Grand Central Dispatch.

Apple didn't spend a huge amount of time and money developing this to not use it to it's maximum potential. Currently, it's really only the Mac Pro line that's going to make full use of GCD. I would therefore expect the new iMacs to have some sort of Quad Core processors to make use of GCD and Apple's investement.

I wouldn't expect the iMac line-up to become too powerful though as you have to consider Apple's pricing and specification structure. There has to be a visible price/performance divide between the top-end iMac and the lowest spec Mac Pro.

:apple:

The iMacs don't need to receive a quad-core and in fact I am very doubtful about such a move. I rather expect Apple to use Westmere dual-core chips with Hyper-Threading which will provide four threads and performance similar to a quad-core. Why no quad-cores? Possible reasons include: (1) there are actually no 32nm quad-cores (2) existing Nehalem quad-cores may have a TDP which is too high for the iMac and (3) the Clarksfield quad-cores are a big step back in frequency (topping out at 2.0 GHz IIRC) even if performance is better than existing dual-cores. This last reason would pose a problem for marketing unless Apple lists the processors as "speeds up to 3.2 GHz" by listing the top frequency of the 920XM in single core Turbo mode. Thus, I think Apple will unfortunately stay with two core solutions.

The bolded part is the key statement. Reminds me of someone laughing at those thinking candles were on their way out as the electrical grid was getting built.

Reminds me when the Macbook Air was released. Way ahead of its time. But we're slowly moving toward the Macbook Air paradigm.

Yup.

I've dropped physical media for about 3-4 years now. TV comes into Tivo, Music comes in from iTunes or Amazon, movies come from many digital sources including Amazon on-demand, comcast on-demand, Apple store, and netflix streaming.

For me, physical media IS dead, and has been for a long time now.

We'll be downloading 1080p content soon enough. It's being done every day via torrent already. Exact same picture quality as Blu Ray discs minus the audio enahncements. You can still get DTS but it's limited. And file sizes while not 40gb (some are, actually, there are fully-ripped Blu-Ray discs out there), a lot of them still come in at a hefty 15-20gb. And there's plenty of activity. If the uploader knows what they're doing, picture quality will be identical. And there are plenty of people with this knowledge. Obviously, torrenting works on a different level, but it's a sure sign that we've come a long way and there's not that much further to go.

It'll be done legit soon enough, rest assured. The load is heavy right now, but infrastructures aren't collapsing.

Instead of the Xeon, I think it would be the i7 since it's much more dekstop friendly.

are you serious? have you ever used a diffrent os in your life? you sound like you copy and pasted that from apples website or something

if your dont paste a file that you cut, IT DOESNT MOVE, it stays where it is. (this is true for ALL windows OS's, Ubuntu, SUSE, and every other linux OS i can think of

Reminds me when the Macbook Air was released. Way ahead of its time. But we're slowly moving toward the Macbook Air paradigm.

ahead of its time? LOL how much did apple pay you to say that?

lets see.

CPU is garbage 1.6GHz? please....
over heating issues (see threads in the air section)
bad hinges (see the class action lawsuit)
sub par battery life
non-removable battery = JOKE
horrible unoptimized build design (takes 20 screws to hold in the keyboard, ridiculous)
onboard video = garbage
non-upgradable ram (Soldered to board, what a stupid design)
non user upgradeable HDD
1 useless USB Port that cant actually fit all USB Devices (IE USB HSDPA adapters)

also it is mentioned that the Air is infact not the thinnest laptop, not even at its release date, thats false advertising on apples part. i remember seeing both Toshiba and NEC had thinner laptops but nobody cared because even if the laptop is 2 dimensional you still need a 13.3" bag to carry it.

yeah, if anything the macbook air was behind its time, by a solid couple years. nobody freaking cares if the imac (or macbook for that matter) is thinner, except the people at apple. its all thin enough. how about some focus on making these machines fully functional, for gods sake. im all for aesthetically pleasing design but even if the h/w was the same (its not even close) id rather have a mbp than a macbook air. i cant believe anyone buys those things.

I guess you're paying for the exceptional user experience with the operating system and quality. But you're right, the prices are a little steep.

a little steep? you can buy 3 computers ALL faster and more powerful with larger HDD's than the cheapest imac for CHEAPER.

thats called a RIP OFF IMO, no amount of customer service can equate to that since CS only comes in when something breaks. and for how much your paying for that shiny plastic i would expect the absolute highest level of QC(you shouldn't even be able to get a defective mac for how much they are charging)

their lame 1yr warranty is also a joke, most Asus notebooks have a Global 2 yr warranty with a 1 yr accidental warranty attached (no additional charge)

Asus also has a free lifetime tech support where as Apple's is only 90 days,

what the hell kind of "exceptional" CS is that?

i know someone that bought it, it sucked so bad and the HDD had bad sectors only after a couple months, so he got a MBP, he then got scammed by some Nigerian email and he basically shipped the MBA to Nigeria for FREE with no paypal payment (just a fake email that he never confirmed)

that shows you his intelligence level, more money than brains.

and that's all it ever will be, your opinion.

Meanwhile, apple continues to top/ be among the top of the charts. I wonder why that is.....

because they have a good OS, and a popular portable music player, the imac is not whats driving apple to the top. infact if apple never came out with the ipod and drove that hard, they would not be anywhere near the top.

Point of this anecdotal post?

So apple computers top the charts because of the ipod, right. Yes the ipod brought attention back to apple, but why would that drive their computer sales?

on top of what? the "premium" market? ok fine, while you can go with another hardware manufacture and get EXACTLY what you want, i don't care how much you try and sell that magic beans of "tight integrated OS driven experience"
