CDMA iphone 4 in january is highly likely but it might not be for the american market.;)

Can't see the need for a 7" iPad, it's not that much different from the existing size. A 5" one could be possible though - but the iPod Touch isn't that far off at 3.5"...

I just can't see a new iPhone being released in January, unless it is a CDMA version. A version with redesigned internals to alleviate the antenna problem, yes, but not a totally new phone.

Your individual use case isn't valid for Apple to make a sweeping business decision.

Different people have different needs. I personally would rather have a 7" or 8" iPad rather than the currently-shipping model. There is a market for a smaller iPad, particularly if it comes in at a lower price point which would be expected since the touchscreen panel is the most expensive part in the bill of materials. Cost has been well documented barrier to iPad adoption.

The fact of the matter is Apple serves what the mass market consumer wants, not a individual commenter on a Mac rumors website. Apple isn't making devices for you. They are making devices for the Joe Consumers of this world, but most affluent ones with large amounts of disposable income, well educated, et cetera.

I can think of THREE big reasons for a smaller iPad:

- cheaper - economy sucks right now, so Apple needs a cheaper iPad, not to mention looming Android tablets.

- Reading - smaller (high-res) screen could compete nicely with other e-readers.

- Gaming - direct competition for the likes of Nintendo.

Wow. That would be a huge middle finger to the people who just bought an iPhone. I know technology evolves quickly, but 6 months?! That's just ridiculous.

Not if you listen to the Android folks... the drool over new hardware every few weeks.
Can't please everyone I guess.

agreed on a 7" iPad

If Apple does this, it just won't be one of their smarter moves, IMO.

I mean, sure, more choices are a good thing -- but Apple hasn't even offered options in areas where huge numbers of interested buyers are demanding them. (EG. No matte screen options for Macbooks... only on the Pro models.)

Yet they're going to offer 2 different sizes of iPad? If they stick with the current configuration options (wi-fi only or wi-fi + 3G, and 16GB/32GB/64GB versions), that'll be 12 different products they have to stock!

And like you say, the current size is just about ideal. If you shrink it down to a 7" screen, you're right there with all those netbooks w/7" screens that most people think are too small to view web pages on comfortably.

The *only* people I see a 7" iPad being popular with are the "me too" types who want to own an iPad but can't afford one. They'd probably go for a 7" model if it meant getting the entry level price down to, say, $249-349.

Don't see the need for a 7 inch iPad. The size now is perfect and any smaller would be too small. I think Apple spent a long time figuring out the perfect size for the iPad, and don't see them adding a smaller version. You have the iPhone/iPod touch size, and the iPad. No need for anything in between.

Rumors

Is it just me, or does everyone find the comments to these stories far more insightful than the crap article?:apple:

I'd rather have 11" iPads. Around 11" the keyboard on screen can be true to life with an external keyboard size. A smaller iPad with lesser resolution would be tragic; I hope they keep the res. if they go smaller.

Agreed. I am especially interested in the shuffle with the possible mini touch scree. I would not buy one but would like to see if they can come up with something new.
I wouldn't buy it either, and I want a shuffle.
Wish they would re-issue the 2nd gen design.

How about the Classic iPod? Haven't heard a peep about that.....

ummm interesting, a new iphone would be perfect for jan release as i bought my iphone 4 unlocked and no commitment to carriers and my contract i got with my iphone 3gs ends in december so iphone 5 would be excellent on a new contract and will have the iphone 4

ipad, no need for a smaller ipad it would crazy for them to make it smaller

ipod, not really interested as my ipod touch 3rd gen does me fine :p

Best not be in January, I got an 18 month contract and paid more for the 3GS exactly for the reason of upgrading to the 5g just as it comes out

Six Months would be fine if Apple would switch to a slightly more incremental upgrade cycle, and it would mean that next year there won't be new, higher spec, Android devices battling against the iPhone 4, which would be almost a year old.

Personally, I'd prefer to see them take this path and face off the Android competition from the rest of the phone industry, but I'm not sure that's what Apple will do.

Six months: spec bump.
Six months: new phone.

As for the touch screen shuffle, sure it could be done and i am sure a lot of people would buy it but it would be very limited in real use. A new iphone in January is unlikely however as people have said many times apple will have to do more frequent updates to keep up with android. A smaller ipad is retarded. 7" would be too small to use comfortably and too big to carry in your pocket. Anyone who says otherwise is out to lunch because typing on a 7" screen would be a huge pain, it isn't big enough to use like a regular keyboard and to too big to be able to hold comfortably and type at the same time. The 3" device will likely be the new apple tv.

No way iPhone 5 will be out. MAYBE, A version for Verizon but iPhone 5th Generation won't be til next June. iPod rumors more than likely are true, i would put money on that and I can't see a new iPad til next year because they still trying to keep up with orders on the one now.

I'm all for a new iPhone But what about the hardcore fans like me.

I wait outside O2 for the new iPhone 4. And for what, a phone that has signal problems and proximity sensor problems. And then it looks like they are going to bring out the iphone 5 in january does apple think that we are all made of money. We cant buy out of a contract so easy or so cheap!

lets only hope that apple give its loyal customers a rebate on what thy have paid or at least let us upgrade for free.

I don't understand why people are so angry over putting bumper case on iphone 4. I personally love the bumper case. It makes the grip less slippery and I find it quite stylish too. plus it's free.

also, even if the antenna issue did not exist, people should've been seeking for a case/bumper anyways because of potential crack when you drop it.

Some Apple users are just too damn unreasonable.
Well, maybe in your 'world' but there are lots of people who always keep their iPhone (2G/3G/3Gs/4) naked because they like it more that way.
My iPhone is assured so if I drop it, or I'll spill water on it, they will just replace it. I wasn't planning to buy a case (or bumper). I like the iPhone 4 when it's just naked. And well, now I'm forced to use some sort of case since I can't browse the web on 3G because the signal drops all the time. It will just jump back to GRPS (that's like 8 times slower than EDGE) and that's no fun to use.

Smaller iPad...

Keep the current resolution, but use the Retina display technology to get the device down to a more manageable size...

Especially if they add the camera from the iPhone4.

iPhone by January? I thought the whole article was decent till I read that. No chance.

Wow. That would be a huge middle finger to the people who just bought an iPhone. I know technology evolves quickly, but 6 months?! That's just ridiculous.

Look at all the Android phones. They are refreshed daily it seems like. The iPhone and Apple are the only ones that don't do refreshes more than once a year.
