iPods, my vague guess:

Withdrawal of iPod Classic, the last hard-drive based iPod. Apparently, Apple weren't interested in picking up Toshiba's 250Gb 1.8" drive. The Touch becomes the new 'standard' iPod with a 128Gb Touch instead, perhaps even doing away with the scroll-wheels on the Nano as well. Mebbe.

CDMA iphone 4 in january is highly likely but it might not be for the american market.;)

Which market will it be for then? I'm not aware of CDMA even being used in Europe, but correct me if I'm wrong. If apple create a device specifically for the non-us market, this will be a first. It's also very, very unlikely.

A 5-7" iPad serves no purpose. The iPhone "5" at best is the long rumored cdma version. No way they would jump their product launch 6 months up. They have a steady history or iPhones in June, iPods in September.

So, expect a much needed refresh next month the for iPod family.

I can think of THREE big reasons for a smaller iPad:

- cheaper - economy sucks right now, so Apple needs a cheaper iPad, not to mention looming Android tablets.

- Reading - smaller (high-res) screen could compete nicely with other e-readers.

- Gaming - direct competition for the likes of Nintendo.

#2 & #3 make sense. The first one doesn't really, seeing as how Apple has sold truckloads of these things at their current price point. They're all about margins, not affordability.

I still don't understand why the iPad isn't the same aspect ratio as the iphone. it would only make sense to have a wider screen. wtf apple. I still wish my iPhone 4 was 64 gigs. if they bust that out quick ill be pist. That HD video eats space:mad:

That would be a disaster, the Ipod classic is the perfect device who just want a device for playing their music collection. The touch has smaller hard drive, smaller battery life and is more fragile. This would be a BAD move.

If they do a 64GB iPhone in January, I will gladly hold off my iPhone purchase until then.

I'm all for a new iPhone But what about the hardcore fans like me.

I wait outside O2 for the new iPhone 4. And for what, a phone that has signal problems and proximity sensor problems. And then it looks like they are going to bring out the iphone 5 in january does apple think that we are all made of money. We cant buy out of a contract so easy or so cheap!

lets only hope that apple give its loyal customers a rebate on what thy have paid or at least let us upgrade for free.

Apple won't give you anything. They didn't make you go buy the iPhone 4 on the first day. Wait for the reviews if you're really concerned.

Well, maybe in your 'world' but there are lots of people who always keep their iPhone (2G/3G/3Gs/4) naked because they like it more that way.
My iPhone is assured so if I drop it, or I'll spill water on it, they will just replace it. I wasn't planning to buy a case (or bumper). I like the iPhone 4 when it's just naked. And well, now I'm forced to use some sort of case since I can't browse the web on 3G because the signal drops all the time. It will just jump back to GRPS (that's like 8 times slower than EDGE) and that's no fun to use.

Insured not assured....

Your individual use case isn't valid for Apple to make a sweeping business decision.

Different people have different needs. I personally would rather have a 7" or 8" iPad rather than the currently-shipping model. There is a market for a smaller iPad, particularly if it comes in at a lower price point which would be expected since the touchscreen panel is the most expensive part in the bill of materials. Cost has been well documented barrier to iPad adoption.

The fact of the matter is Apple serves what the mass market consumer wants, not a individual commenter on a Mac rumors website. Apple isn't making devices for you. They are making devices for the Joe Consumers of this world, but most affluent ones with large amounts of disposable income, well educated, et cetera.

You forgot to mention that you own Apple stock.

Don't see the need for a 7 inch iPad. The size now is perfect and any smaller would be too small. I think Apple spent a long time figuring out the perfect size for the iPad, and don't see them adding a smaller version. You have the iPhone/iPod touch size, and the iPad. No need for anything in between.

7 inch iPad (or iPod touch...) is for people who want to read material comfortably without holding a 10 inch iPad. I found it too heavy to hold comfortably in one hand.

It is for people who find it inconvenient to use their iPad as a mp3 player.

Iphone is too small for reading pdfs, articles, books.

This may be an answer to the 6" Kindle, but even if it is not, I know there is a market for it.

I would use it for the following:
-replace my iPod nano
-read research articles, pdfs, etc
-jot notes
-record notes

Market: Academics, students, researchers, paperback readers, people with failing eyesight and slippery fingers...

iphone 5

Would love to see Apple come out with more than one version of iphone per year. I think it's kind of silly how they can only update in June. Apple needs to keep up with it's competitors IMO once a year update is not doing that at this moment.

I think it would make a lot of users very happy if they updated twice a year as well. My contract ends in February of 2011 (My iphone hit the deck and busted the screen so I had to buy a new one mid cycle.) No way I'm going to buy an i4 when I know a new one is coming in June. I'm sure Apple has seen the drop off in sales from leading up to the next version. Sure some go out a buy a phone that is 8 months old because they may not have a choice, IE: broken, lost, or stolen. But most would want to wait given the choice...

The Chinese.

Apple is making money hand over fist from the iPhone, despite updating them only once a year. They have no pressure to keep up with their competitors. The Apple brand is strong enough that they don't have to do what everyone else does to be extremely successful. In fact, it's NOT doing what everyone else does that has made them what they are.

My worry is for developers.

At the moment we're producing for original iPhone, iPhone 4 and iPad. Each has different requirements for assets and in some cases layout.

And now we're adding a 7 inch screen in as well. If it keeps the same 1024x768 resolution as the current iPad and the same (or close dpi) all is well. However 1024x768 on a 7 inch screen may make most body text on websites too small to read without zooming in.

Which would mean developers would have to produce four sets of assets and possibly three different layouts for iOS.

Far from ideal.

... And then it looks like they are going to bring out the iphone 5 in january does apple think that we are all made of money.

Personally, I think it's crazy that people still have the mentality of cheap throwaway phones that they will upgrade the next time something slightly better comes out. in the time I had my 3G, I had friends that went from Symbian, to webOS, to Android. Why? Because they wanted something new - not because the device they had didn't do everything that they wanted.

Coincidentally, everyone I know that got an iPhone, still has an iPhone.

...

If they do release a 7" ipad its only so that they can have 78% of the screen so they can use the same resolution as the iphone4 and have iPhone apps run full screen instead of the current cluster ****

http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent..._of_the_smartphone_death_grips.html?&tk=hp_fv

Real world results.

Looks as though the signal loss in other phone is real but the death grip to create them is far from real world.

Also people should feel entitled Apple launched a botched design and is now trying to sweep it under the rug.

I'm not disputing that people are having problems. I am saying that I've choked my phone with the death grip and cannot kill it. So, as much as people want this to be a full problem for everyone to justify their anti-Apple sentiment, I am not having the issue. Period. And I'm the first one to call and complain to Apple if something doesn't work.

Darn, i got really exited when i saw that picture, i thought the little one was supposed to be the 9.7 inch iPad, and the big one was a bigger iPad. I want a 13-inch iPad!!!!!!:)

I think the 7 inch iPad is overkill. I don't see a reasonable purpose for it. Sure, smaller is better sometimes, but is the iPad really that big? I don't think so. It's perfect for its intended uses. Just another way to make a buck I guess.
