Does this mean no more iPod Classic?!?!

I hope not. -nobody- makes high capacity mp3 players these days except for Apple. The competition either makes flash players, or they make stuff to watch movies on which is too big to fit in a pocket, but too small to use as a tablet. The iPod classic is ideal, because it can store a good number of CDs ripped with Apple Lossless, as well as backup files.

I'm torn right now on the eternal "Buy now or wait?" question. I want to buy an iPad this weekend. But will Apple update them in September with the iPod line? Or will they follow the typical yearly update cycle of the iPod/iPhone, meaning I'll have until April before my iPad is the "old model?"

I really want one badly now, but I don't want buyer's remorse in September. :(

I feel exactly the same as this lady. I'm bummed how slow my iPhone 3G has gotten, and the iPads are really really cool. If I buy an iPad, I can ditch iphone and AT&T altogether!!!

:mad::rolleyes::mad::mad::apple::apple:

It'd be interesting if Apple did release an iPhone for Verizon in January to say the least. What might make sense is if they adopt a new bi-annual release schedule that looks like this...

Jan 2011: CDMA iPhone "4.5" (small upgrades from iPhone 4)
June 2011: GSM iPhone 5
Jan 2012: CDMA (+LTE 4G?) iPhone 5.5
June 2012: GSM (+LTE 4G?) iPhone 6
... etc.

This would make some sense. For one, Verizon is ahead of AT&T on LTE rollout. This would allow AT&T a little more time to roll their LTE network out to more markets.

If the rumor that AT&T loses exclusivity to the iPhone in 2010 is true, then a January 2011 announcement of a new iPhone makes some sense.

But if you're going to lose exclusivity to one carrier, then why not open it up to ALL carriers (Verizon & Sprint for CDMA, AT&T and T-Mobile for GSM.) If this happens, then your rollout idea could work. Get the GSM folks in mid-year, and the CDMA folks six months later, each time providing a small glimpse of what's to come for the other network type.

None of those seem pretty accurate except for maybe the iPod refresh, which that current line of products needs badly. My guess is that the iPod Classic will be weeded out and it will be the last we will see of our old Clicky wheeled friend. I am guessing all iPods will be of the touch variety, and kind of minimalize the product line. That will give O.G. iPod owners a incentive to upgrade now that I am sure the iPod OS isn't supported anymore, the games were sort of a waste of money and they won't feel cool without apps and iOS. I saw someone the other day with a OH-GEE iPod gen 1. I had to play with it, it was so nostalgic. Its like looking at a Apple II then looking at a iMac. Amazing how fast technology has moved in the last decade. :apple:

I'm all for a new iPhone But what about the hardcore fans like me.

I wait outside O2 for the new iPhone 4. And for what, a phone that has signal problems and proximity sensor problems. And then it looks like they are going to bring out the iphone 5 in january does apple think that we are all made of money. We cant buy out of a contract so easy or so cheap!

lets only hope that apple give its loyal customers a rebate on what thy have paid or at least let us upgrade for free.

Although I'm only singling out the above quote, other similar comments so far on the thread have made me want to ask (apologies if it's already been asked later in the thread)...

Why would some of you be angry if a new phone is released in January? Why do you think Apple's 'loyal' customers should hope for a rebate? Why the "we can't buy out of a contract so easy or so cheap" comment? Why would you want to? You've willingly bought something which suits your needs and have willingly entered into a contract - what difference does it make to you that a new model is out later?

I'm hoping to get a new perspective on this because I really can't understand the anger or frustration on things like this.

You speak of 'loyal customers'. What do you think you deserve? Apple have designed and produced products that fit your needs (that's their part done), you've given Apple your money (that's your part done). Therefore, you're both even. Why the feeling of being owed something?

Again, I'm hoping to get a good explanation and different perspective on this.

It just all seems very similar to celebrity; fans demanding more from music artists than just music despite the fact the 'deal' is done when the music is made and the people have paid for it.

Many more Apple haters post here than anywhere. Guess there just aren't enough Android forums for them.

Oh, there are plenty of Android forums out there, they just don't find any satisfaction talking to fellow users who have already drunk the koolaid I suppose.

Oddly enough, as an iPhone user, I don't frequent Android forums to talk about how much better my iPhone is than an Android device.

Android has to be the most astroturfed (whether intentionally or unintentionally) product in the history of products. You can't go anywhere on the Web (meaning non-Android-specific-sites) without being bombarded with "ANDROID FTW!" and seeing opposing viewpoints shouted down. It's quite extraordinary. Google PR has done an amazing job whipping its user base into a frenzy. These people actually believe Google is doing them a favor with Android merely out of the goodness of their hearts.

Since when has that been Apple's strategy?

Never, of course. And never will be.

I highly doubt the iPhone rumor. If anything it would simply be a Verizon iPhone, so a 4.5 Gen iPhone.

It may be just you. Most of the comments here are as usual, useless and pointless. Such as mine right here. Many more Apple haters post here than anywhere. Guess there just aren't enough Android forums for them.

Competition is good for both android and Apple, its like the football teams, they create "false" quarrels so that Jo Blog becomes forever more aficionado and keeps paying more and more and more.... the only ones that actually get something out of this are the teams not the millions of "customers"

You just dont understand how this works!

PS (and the people that actually use something until it dies on them instead of running after the next fad)

iPod Touch with Blue Ray or I'm done with Apple.

I don't think a Blu Ray player will fit in an iPod Touch. At least not in its current size. :D

The iPhone update actually wouldn't be that bad an idea. Android is gaining fast on them, and their updates are coming very quickly. Waiting a year for an update is an eternity in today's phone market.

I really hope they don't kill the iPod Classic. Like a lot of folks around here, I have a fairly big collection and it gets very expensive if I try to buy a Touch big enough to hold everything. I can buy a 160GB Classic cheaper than a 32GB Touch. It would be nice if they could replace the spinning hard drive with flash memory and simple interface, similar to an overgrown Nano. I just want something to hold my media collection: no apps, internet access, etc. I have a phone for all that. But I know that won't happen.

Seriously? And someone here mentioned that these postings are in some way, insightful? Give me a break.

What I'd Love to see:

iPod Nano with two screens in a flat glass front. Basically a ~1"-square tiny touchscreen with adaptive/variable control icons, below the main view screen, to replace the scroll-wheel. Otherwise incremental stat upgrades from the current Nano.

iPod Shuffle basically minus the view-screen bit, and simplified. The 1"-square controls only, with basic information display, like current track info. Kind of like the previous shuffle that just had the round control layout, before the "piece-of-aluminum-gum" shuffle. with a clip to hold it to your clothing.

iPod Classic gone. iPod Nano is smaller, with no moving parts, and the price of NAND Flash is probably low enough for Nano to have a lot of capacity.

iPod Touch... TRANSFORMED.

NEW: iPad 5. 5" iPad, replacing iPod Touch. iPad format, shrunk to iPhone size and thickness, with similar processing to iPhone 4. More capacity, but no phone infrastructure. GPS (maybe via dongle plug-in), compass, accelerometer, and gyroscope. Bluetooth. FM/HD radio receiver. Skype or other VoIP via microphone-enabled headphones. The same camera setup as iPhone, good camera on center of the back side, VGA on front side, above the screen. iPhone's Retina screen.
-iPad like aluminum back with radiused edges (why the camera should be on the centerline, where the body has the thickness to accommodate. Glass front. Plastic antenna-array cover with proper reception sorted out.
-Note: with the camera in place, this device could be pitched against Flip and other digital video capture devices, as a more comprehensive device. Also with iMovie for iOS 4, and direct-to-web capabilities.

NEW: iPad 7.... if they must have an intermediate between iPad 5. 7" IPS screen, otherwise similar features.

Updated: iPad 10 (rounded up from 9.7 inch screen size figure.) revision of current 1st gen iPad. Updated with incremental processing speed specifications, and similar to the iPad 5 that I just mentioned. Including the cameras, or at least one high-quality iSight camera in the screen bezel, if not a high-quality camera on the back side, so at least it will do FaceTime. On-board speaker and mic for iPad 10 and 7, maybe 5. iPad 5 would be able to cope with just the headphone/mic setup.

Iphone upgrade... likely incremental, to try to regain some face. Possibly unlocked between At&t, t-Mobile GSM models, and CDMA/LTE Verizon and other CDMA carrier models, both with revised/fixed antenna issues. iPhone 4.1, so to speak.

Very true. I had a Touch for a short time, and absolutely hated it. Nothing beats a good ol' hard drive, centered solely on music. The death of the Classic will be the end of an amazing era. :(

lolol good one, but how about brand loyalty/return customer.
Providing a good product is just not good enough. No loyalty will have them looking at the competition.

If iphone updated in January, I would expect that Apple would be under pressure to offer a very aggressive upgrade deal to iphone 4 customers.

Absurd post. You know it's bad when the most plausible thing is the shuffle getting a screen.

Wow. That would be a huge middle finger to the people who just bought an iPhone. I know technology evolves quickly, but 6 months?! That's just ridiculous.

new smartphones get released nearly every month, what's so ridiculous about a 6 month timeframe?

I guess all us iPhone 4 owners need to prepare to "bend over" come January.

coments like this are stupid. Every other company releases much more crap than Apple on an ongoing basis (look at Sony). You are never forced to buy the next thing. Does yours stop working with the next issue comes out? These comments are so tiresome.
