One more thing...

about iPad and the European Law for Universal Chargers:
1) iPad is not a cellular phone, thus, strictly speaking, must not comply to this European (soon-to-be) rule

2) You cant charge an iPad with a cellular charger, there's simply not enough "juice" in it in order to charge the big iPad battery. Thus you'll still need the very own iPad charger...

Just my 2 (euro) cents

1)So much for all the February rumors. April is still 3+ months away and I'm a bit surprised Apple is waiting this long to release the next version with all the other vendors out there working hard to beat Apple at this tablet game...not that I love their tablets yet but 2011 and 2012 should be the years of heavy tablet wars.

2)Retina. Sheeez....Apple makes up this term for a particular resolution on the iPhone 5, then uses the term on the iPad 2 and CHANGES the definition of Retina less than 12 months later. Lovely.

Still don't get why they are obssessed of using retina terminology

Why? because Apple recognizes that perception is what's important to the user experience - not specifications. Most users don't grok 1920x1440 4:3 vs. 329dpi, they just know "I can't see the dots". Since the effect of resolution depends on distance (see http://xkcd.com/732 ), the issue really becomes "can I see pixels at normal viewing distance" - to wit: "retina display".

Noooooooooo. I asked for nothing but Best Buy gift cards for my birthday and Christmas this holiday season. I can't wait until October?!?!?!

Wouldn't freak too much. I don't think the Apple as sole reseller for 6 months is true. Even Apple has limited leeway to how much it can jerk retail partners around. So guessing BB will carry the iPad2 from launch day just as it carried the original iPad BUT remember BB had very limited supply of the original iPad. Just a hint though -- next time ask for cash. It's accepted everywhere, not just a single store. GCs are a rip.

I can't wait. Fighting my kids for use of my iPad has become unbearable. I almost need one for each member of the family. :(

++ ... I'm tired fighting over the iPad with the rest of the family. I only get my iPad quality time once the kids are in bed :) Might get a second discounted 'old' model for the kids (so that they have the 'same' model and stop fighting) and I will treat myself with the new one.

+1. I read that in a thread a few weeks ago. I can't remember where I saw but there was a artist's rendering of what the adaptor would look like and extras it could have. It may be to late too bundle such and adapter for this year's model. Something may come on the market next year.

Yes (and thanks for the link). I agree there will be an adapter >> FOR THE iPhone << to use micro-USB via the Apple 30-pin connector. The iPhone is much smaller than the iPad, so its not so easy to include a separate micro-USB port on the iPhone when its already got that Apple 30-pin connector. But its NOT difficult (or expensive) to include a separate micro-USB port on the iPad, so its not a stretch for me to believe that Apple will include both (and obviate the need for an adapter on the iPad).

Oh boy, this indicates I will be able to get my iPad 3 sometime in April/May 2012.

It didn't take a genius. Annual upgrade, a year from the release of the last version. Apple have always done this with iDevices and roughly 18 months for the mac range.

I'm not sure I want to trust that report.

Saturdays are not Apple's traditional day for releasing new products or upgrades to older products. They seem to prefer Tuesdays for that purpose. While I don't argue that April is likely to be the month they release it, I would expect either March 29th or April 5th as the more likely date as the nearest anniversary to the original release (as compared to pre-orders).

Keep in mind that this is deduction based on past history and not any kind of inside information. I could be just as right--or wrong--as the report itself.

I do find some of the rumored changes unlikely, however.

What use is a USB port without drivers? Apple is not going to suddenly start supporting a bunch of devices. Maybe a few, through the current dongle.

Now if they gave access to the file system and let you copy files back and forth, instead of syncing with iTunes, that would be fantastic. But that's just not going to happen. I love the iPad, but once Android devices get good enough, I'll probably switch, just because of this one thing.

Out of curiosity, how much further do you hold your iPad vs your Phone, because for me it'd be the same distance.

I've seen people quote 18" to 24" as the viewing distance for an iPad, whereas Steve noted 12" was the distance for the iPhone.

Didn't Jobs define the RD in his keynote as being over 300dpi?

No, he didn't. He qualified it as being exactly what I said it was, size of pixels and distance viewed from.

He then said that at the 12" distance you view an iPhone, 300 ppi was required to achieve the effect, he basically qualified it for the iPhone. However, the 300 ppi doesn't hold for an iPad you hold farther away.

I don't understand why everyone is so hot and bothered about a significantly higher-resolution screen. On a small screen like the iPhone/iPod, the sharpness of the Retina display is important. It becomes less important on a larger screen like the iPad. I for one would rather see more graphical prowess displayed on the existing screen than a processor trying to drive 4x the number of pixels in a more limited way.

Hey man....way to back up all that "not possible."

Sure.

1. Retina Display would put the cost of this thing to more than $1000. I suggest a higher resolution but not a retina display. These reports specifically say Retina Display and that's why I felt I caught the bluff.

2. USB: I know Apple loves (or loved) USB but they know that they have better solutions. USB is going to help a lot of people but I don't think Apple is one of those who put things just to satisfy the consumers. After one year (hypo.), if there are better solutions to USB, Apple would not be in a good state to axe out the port and and the architecture. I don't think Apple will do that.

3. With the iPhone in place, android in action and harmony among people :D, Apple will plan out a mass release for iPad 2. It cannot be exclusive to the US for 3 months. A couple of weeks is fine but 3 months (1/4th of a year) is a veryrisky period.

1. Retina is just a marketing term. Using Apples definition you only need resolution high enough that most can't see it. As to iPad due to it's relatively low resolution screen they have a lot of room to increase resolution. In any event iOS is already configured to allow for fractional resolution increases and Apple has warned developers about the possibility of multipliers other than two.

2. USB will be around a lot longer than many seem to realize. Adding this port drastically increases the flexibility of the iPad and especially addresses the business market. To be honest I'd rather see an SD slot first but would be happy with a standard USB port instead. What is interesting though is that none of the leaked cases have what looks like a cut out for USB.

3. As to the roll out in April I would be surprised if Apple waits that long. Sounds to me like an effort to trace a leak. For one thing why Saturday? As to the 3 month or longer wait for European distribution, honestly do you guys think you are special or what? The US is Apples home country, it only makes sense to meet demand there first. Further we really don't know what sort of tech they will be ramping here, it may take awhile to reach mass production.

The LCD, the battery or the SoC could all be running new tech that may have growing pains. For example Samsung is just bringing online a new process node with very low power characteristics. Both LCD and battery tech are constantly being revised, migrated or improved. IPad 2 could be very bleeding edge tech, or it could be a more modest update. The further off the update is put the more I think it will be a major update.

Anyhow why believe this report anymore than any other? IPad2 will come when it is ready.

Wasn't one of the original iPads released on april 3rd? I think so as I remember it being on my little brothers birthday.

I have inside information:
From Germany to the rest of the world: macnotes.de is no source and doesn't have a credible source. They are link baiting, writing awful articles with stupid mistakes all the time and just don't have a (good) reputation. Their main purpose is to advertise for 3gstore.de, known for selling unlocked iPhones since recently.
I'm shocked this dubious news with obviously false facts (USB) even makes it unreflected and without backed up information on an international site. The reputation of macrumors suffers seriously for me after this.

I think pretty good logic all around, but I also think you're underestimating Apple.
1. Retina Display would put the cost of this thing to more than $1000. I suggest a higher resolution but not a retina display. These reports specifically say Retina Display and that's why I felt I caught the bluff.
I don't think it be that hard or all that expensive to create and obtain a 300ppi display that's roughly 10" diagonal. Apple managed the shift for the iPhone4 without raising the price, so I don't see why they can't do the same for the iPad.

Personally, I agree with you. While many people feel that USB is absolutely necessary for a tablet device, I don't. Interestingly, we're all aware that Apple and Intel have been working on that Light Speed (or whatever it's called) protocol and that Intel itself has said the first versions will be copper based, not fiber optic. I'd think this format would be more likely, though even then I don't expect to see a new hole in the side of the iPad for it. If a hole is made, I think an SD card slot is much more likely.

Again I agree. If I remember correctly, the Wi-Fi-only versions of the original iPad hit UK and other markets within a month or 5 weeks of the American release--about the same time as the 3G hit American stores. I'll grant that from there the international rollout was pretty widely spread, but Apple has pushed for massively increased production capability. They have some idea now what kind of production capability they need to meet the demand and should tighten that rollout into a much shorter time period than the original. It might take three months to hit all markets, but I expect delays of only a couple weeks between markets rather than the month or so they did in 2010. Remember, their production capacity is more than 4x what it was for the original iPad.

1. I agree the iPad doesn't HAVE to comply. But I think Apple would try to make it comply anyway.

2. Please enlighten me. You are saying that the bigger battery in the iPad requires more "juice" (amperage?) than that provided by the agreed-upon Universal Charger Solution (UCS) just because it has a bigger battery. My imagination says that a bigger battery might take more time to charge but can still be charged via UCS... why is my imagination wrong?

Even if Apple announces the iPad2 late march they would loose all revenues internationally as noone would buy the old iPad then anymore. It never happened before with an existing product and it certainly will not happen with the iPad 2. That would kill the momentum of this device.

So, my beloved Americans, come back to reality and do simply not believe any articles which are obviously false.

There's an easy way to tell when Apple is about to release a new model--they slow or even stop shipments of the previous one. We've seen it every year with the iPhone, iPod and their computers. Apple itself doesn't announce the dates unless they're announcing a pretty significant change to a given product line--usually available on the day it is announced or within a couple weeks at the outside. Yes, they announce all-new products up to six months ahead; we saw that with the iPhone. But changes to existing product lines usually see a very short lead time.

As an all day every day user (see my signature) I will definitely be upgrading on day 1 IF it has more ram and/or a beefier processor like the iphone4. As apple continues to add wonderful features and capabilities to iOS i have found the hardware in the current iPad to be slightly overtaxed. Its just not as snappy ass it used to be, and thus not as great an experience using it all the time.

Thank you for saying this!!! Everytime I try to point out that iPad is to slow and needs a faster processor I get jumped on. People take it personally when you say their beloved iPad doesn't live up to your(my) standards.

In light of iPhone 4 I'm not sure how Apple managed to keep iPad sales going. It is a nice device but it is very rev one in my bOok.
