"Retina display" is not a formal or scientific term, just a branding term—but to fit Apple’s previous definition, you might have to assume that you hold an iPad farther away from your face than an iPhone. How much farther? A foot? A yard? :) I’d be amazed if it even comes close to the previous definition at any reasonable distance. Still any increase is nice. 2x would be awesome (and makes the most sense for apps) but sounds cost-prohibitive. I’d love to be wrong on that!

Here's the main reason, uh reasons, for keeping that window relatively short:

1) iOS. The second gen iPad will launch with a version of iOS 4 (it has to if it's launching before May as no dev preview has been issued). Apple have made a commitment to having a single release for all devices going forward (or at least that's what the public think now so it becomes difficult to back away from that) so won't want to wait too long to get iOS 5 onto the device. iOS versions normally roll out with the new iPhone in June / July. It also gives a great PR boost possibility by holding the iOS 5 developer event around the launch window for the iPad 2.

2) If (and it looks likely) Apple are going to transition to dual core processors this year the iPad will almost certainly be the first to receive the new SoC. When that happens everyone is going to have a pretty good idea what'll be powering the new iPhone when it turns up. As such it's in Apple's interests to give the competition as little time as possible to respond to that.

3) The last one is more a matter of not honking off your userbase and could easily be ignored but Apple are pretty good with iOS devices at giving them a year run (more or less) before the new one comes out. Launching in March (assuming worldwide launch or at least a quicker rollout than the first iPad) would not go down too well with existing owners, especially those that got 'em for Christmas.

Gotcha, that makes sense as well. Thanks for explaining.

I'd LOVE it if they announced a "pro" model that was a full blown OS X with full multitouch on top. But we all know that won't happen (yet).

Not gonna happen. Exhibit A: the utter failure of full-blown Windows tablets.

Desktop OS ≠ mobile OS. It's never worked before, it won't work now.

Umm... when have Apple ever thought about what customers like if they don't want to do it? :D No, sorry, I honestly don't believe they're going to stick another port on their machines when the FAR simpler option (from their POV) is to say 'here's a charger with a USB / 30 Pin adaptor. If you want to use a regular micro-usb charger just pull the cable apart here >< and you'll find a Micro-USB adaptor". Bear in mind as well that most PC's don't have Micro-USB ports so companies will have to supply adaptors ANYWAY if you're going to connect for data transfer / update reasons.

The PCs dont need a micro-USB, that end ould still be regular USB, the new standard EU chargers would have a micro-USB male in one end and a regular USB male on the other. If apple would comply fully with the standard, the female 30-pin connector would be replaced with a female micro-USB and the cord would be the aforementoned one, leaving the rest unchanged.

will we see only a wi-fi version initially, like last year, or will the 3G versions be available from day one?

Must have higher res

1024x768 is a joke for reading text. The screen on the current iPad looks horrible. They better upgrade the display, especially after iPhone 4 and after all this chatter about the screen being upgraded in iPad2. I don't care at all about cameras -- I want a screen that's good for reading content and for browsing the web.

Agreed.

A release in the UK 3 months after USA would kill iPad sales in the UK for 3 months. What would be the point of that?

+1 Can't see a staggered release for this exact reason.

Hopefully it'll be a 2nd April Worldwide release :)

Your eyes must be worse than mine, then, because I'm able to read 9pt text easily on the iPad, and my vision is 20;200. I'm extremely nearsighted.

Orientation lock in 4.3 looks to come back

Looks like 4.3 will have the orientation lock as a user-selectable option to allow the side switch to be Orientation or Mute. Smart move Apple!

Now if they would just sell an accessory "clip" that would clip on the iPad dock connector, run up the back and put a CCD camera on top. This way older iPads could take advantage of the upcoming Facetime stuff - and not force people that already paid close to $1K for these things to buy new ones.

It'll never happen - but one can dream :D

Take a look at your AC adaptors for the iPhone and iPad. The iPhone's adaptor only offers about 200mA of charging power--that's 2/10ths of an amp of current. The iPad's adaptor offers a full 1 Amp to charge a much larger battery pack. Even when the iPad is turned off, the iPhone charger will take five times longer to charge the iPad than an iPad charger.

That's about the simplest way I can put it.

Ahh... so, since a USB can supply 1.5 amps while communicating (more if not communicating), that means USB can supply enough power to recharge the iPad's battery. Correct???

can somebody write an intelligent description of why or why not there will be some sort of usb port on the next ipad?

Both cams

Just in camera talk the iPad 2 doesn't sell me (not saying the rest of iPad 2 won't be cool). Maybe I'm in the lone here or maybe it's just my friends and family, I just rarely use FaceTime or Skype, etc. It maybe a once or every other month thing with my brothers family on the east coast. Though maybe a different job setting would change that.
Don't get me wrong I'm not knocking the idea, just not a selling point for me, though I understand others want it. I can see for those with no cams on computers, phones or current pad users too. Plus a rear facing camera just feels odd when I imagine it on my iPad, IMO of course.

Better display: great
USB: okay
Speaker I have seen rumored: not huge for me

I will wait for iPad 3, plus without some miracle I have to wait, money wise makes no sense at the moment or in April.
What would really make me want iPad 2 is iLife and or say a light version of Final Cut Express (not going to happen I know why I'm cool for now) of purse when it hits I will be saying " I want that......but sadly have to wait"

Some people think that the EU directive about cellphone chargers with micro-USB plugs has something to do with this. Of course, the iPad is not a cellphone, so one wonders how this conclusion can be made.

Others think it has more to do about plugging in accessories, like a flash card reader (e.g., to get images from a camera into the iPad). This functionality is available with the iPad Camera Connection Kit, but it uses the dock connector.

There is no way Apple will sell what analysts are projecting if this rumor is true! I call BS!!! I will be PISSED if this happens. I have been waiting since before the first one to get the 2nd gen. I say March!

Yay! Early April was kind of what I was expecting anyway and I can't wait. I have been iPad-less since late august and it kind of sucks. (It was stolen) Wasn't going to bother with predictions but here they are:

Two cameras

A screen that Apple will describe as a "retina" display even though the ppi won't touch the iPhone and iPod touch's

Thinner body with sleeker industrial design resembling the iPod touch but without shiny chrome

Faster guts with a GSM model and CDMA model

32GB base memory for 499

Louder speaker

Just my two cents! And BTW I will probably be one of the crazies camping out for it :)

Indeed. I'm typing this from a Win 7 HP tablet PC and yes, it's really terrible as a tablet if you expect something like the iPad. It's bad even at its supposed calling card: writing with the active digitizer on OneNote. The last thing Apple would do will be releasing an OSX based tablet computer.

In any case, here's hoping that Apple releases the new iPad with a higher resolution display.

Wow.. April? I might have to go Android then. I don't think I can wait much longer :)

I love/use apple as much as most of us do here but I would join you in an instant IF there was a decent android tablet with a sufficiently broad set of applications on something larger than 7 inches (the motorola is the only one that seems plausible and we don't even know when that'll be out).

Hum, no. Typically each PC USB ports (2.0 since they're common nowadays) may supply up to 500 mA, some (Apple MacBook anybody?) even less. Mains powered hubs are allowed to supply up to 1.5 A.
Have you ever tried to charge the iPad via a USB cable connected to a PC (I did) or your only experience about this matter is through wikipedia?

What size/resolution is your computer screen? Does this look horrible to you?

Thank you for saying this!!! Everytime I try to point out that iPad is to slow and needs a faster processor I get jumped on. People take it personally when you say their beloved iPad doesn't live up to your(my) standards.

In light of iPhone 4 I'm not sure how Apple managed to keep iPad sales going. It is a nice device but it is very rev one in my bOok.

It's not processor, the ipad processor is running faster than the iphone.. but it is RAM. i don't think they should skimp to even 512.. it should get a gig. RAM is cheap.. work it out apple.
