1 MP will not suffice for scanning. At least not for OCR. Those apps suck on the iPod while doing a reasonable job on an iPhone.

And I would like to have a 2048x1536 resolution screen. That should be the minimum res of the back cam as well. Just so augmented reality apps look good!

It would be sweet, I agree, but 2K (or, to actually fill a screen like that in both dimensions, you might be stepping up to 4K) cameras are big, super expensive, and require a ton of processing power. It could be 5+ years before we see that kind of video capture (plus extra "augmenting" processing) in a tablet.

It would depend on the size of the page you are scanning.
1MP fits a letter size page just fine at 150dpi.
A Business card page of 3.5x2 Inches could fit 1MP at over 300dpi.

It seems like lots of people here have mixed-up their still-camera marketing jargon with their video camera jargon.

720p resolution is less than 1mp - Presuming this camera is intended for Facetime, Aug Reality, and other 'video class' functions I don't see what's to talk about.

You can say that again.

No, seriously, keep saying it. Over and over. I need a break.

No gestures, no retina display, 1mp camera...that's it. Honeycomb it is.

You shouldn't make your decisions based on wild guesses and people thinking out loud. Those rumors are fun and entertaining (as are all the comments) - but nobody knows which rumor is based on true facts and which are wild guesses of people that feel important.

I would suggest you wait for the official spec and make than an educated decision. If rumors turn out to be true and you think honeycomb fits you better, go for it (based on real spec) ...

1 MP? might as well as not even put a camera in there.

1 MP totally sucks for quality why even bother with the camera.

Sony's made a pretty big deal out of their HD camcorders, and Cisco sells a ton of those HD Flips. You should probably go tell them that their devices might as well not exist.

Maybe YouTube could stop wasting their time with that crappy HD stuff, too.

You do realize this isn't official info, right? Slow down.

In all probability, it's probably true. Was really hoping they weren't going to 3Gs this up and call it a day but that's what it's looking like. The only curveball I can see is maybe a 3D display or something to utilize the A5, but highly unlikely.

My predictions:
- crap camera like iPod Touch 4th gen. probably same parts.
- A5 CPU/GPU
- 512mb ram
- tapered edges
- big speaker grill
- same screen (or 3d screen?)

That's about the right amount of updates to tempt someone to upgrade or buy one after waiting...if they had no competition nipping right on their heels. Competition specifically building a UI for a tablet experience at that.

And I do plan on waiting for both to come out before deciding. Honeycomb comes out afterwards anyway.

Why?

Can any iPad owner tell me why the screen resolution needs to be increased. It looks amazing, it's held about eighteen inches from your face. The calls for a 'retina' display are frankly ridiculous and show a complete lack of basic technical understanding. Where is that processing power coming from? More pixels than a twenty four inch iMac screen, with less processing power, no cooling system and not halving the battery life?

Do get a grip people.

And for this criticising apple because of some rumour, also - get a grip. This reaks of a competitor trying to damage speculation of iPad two so that you go and buy their crappy seven inch bricks.

These forums have devolved into immature nonsense recently, and much of it is by people who have very, very little understanding of technology.

iPad two will be out around April. Specs will be slightly improved, it might have an sd card slot and will most likely have a front facing camera. Anything else is a bonus.

If that isn't enough for you, don't buy one. Dont whinge like immature school kids. I'm on my first gen iPad, it's a stunning device that is selling as fast as it can be produced. There's no need for any massive development for the second gen. I'll be giving it a miss as I have zero use for a camera.

It will launch, critics will slam it. It will sell millions. Tens of millions.

Goddang you people...

720p resolution is roughly 0.9mp

Those of you talking of retina-display level video are on crack - If iPad2 is retina, its native resolution would exceed 1080p levels. Capturing video at this level is a feat only achieved by specialized professional equipment...

Expecting this kind of stuff out of the iPad2 is like expecting your PS3 to double as a petabyte media server.

You're suggesting that apple aren't designing their interface specifically for a tablet experience? Are you insane? The iPad is already out and will be onto it's second iteration before honeycomb is released. Where's the decision to make. If you like android go with android.

And as for three d screens. Just stupid.

Apple doesnt need a gimmick or a curve ball. The product is excellent, it just needs a polish. Not gimmicks.

I have held off on buying the first iPad and was all ready to place my order for the 'ipad 2'. This news has stopped me dead in my tracks. I will wait for the iPad '3' (or perhaps the 6--I mean, maybe they increment the camera one MP for each iteration? You never know with those secretive Apple folks.)
Truly, this is shameful. If this is just conjecture (and we all know the history) perhaps some of you 'diggers' can scoop out the real story. Maybe it's incorrect (I did try a little petroleum jelly on my rear facing camera to simulate what you would see with1MP and folks, it's not pretty!)

that's what she said...

i don't write the jokes, i just deliver 'em...

This is not surprising news, sorry. You don't need a great camera on an iPad. Anyone who wants one, really needs a reality check. There is no point. I have been on record saying that the only reason that the iPad even has a rear camera is for it's FaceTime capabilities. Lastly, did anyone not notice that all these supposed iPad 2 covers only have a hole that is shaped for just the camera, with no room for a flash. How do you not pick up on this? It's been in front of all our faces for weeks.
