Most people know that there's more to a quality photo than the MP count of a camera. However, 1MP?!?! That's ridiculous...did we just flashback to 1997 or something?!

Next news flash is that the iPad now supports more printers...but dot-matrix ones only!

I hope Apple is splitting the iPad line into two different models, one based on the current model with the same resolution and 1mp camera and a higher-end model with Retina display, SD card slot and 5mp camera. Maybe that would explain the disparity with all these rumors. Yes, wishful thinking.

Yeesh. I really hope this is all a bunch of Apple-rumor steering...as the commenter above mentioned. IF not, THEN the iPad 2 is going to suck enormously...Ive been holding out for the next gen specifically for a higher DPI screen and iP4 comparable cameras. Worse part is, Apple could just add a POS VGA front camera to the existing model and expect people to line up for it.

Please Apple, 2084x1536 display + improved CPU/GPU/RAM + iP4 equivalent cameras = HUGE competition squashing success.

The iPad 1 didn't have any cameras and it didn't suck enormously. So how does adding a 1 front camera and 1 rear HD camera make it suck all of a sudden?

In terms of video, this rumour does point to iPhone 4 equivalent cameras.

Are they even making 1MP cameras anymore? Or did Apple pay $3.9 in strategic investment to some manufacturer to continue making 1MP cameras, LP records, cassette tapes and some such exotic stuff?

No...Apple is also heavily investing in:

  • dot matrix printers
  • monochrome CRT monitors
  • 8" floppy disk drives
  • the Pentium processor with the FPU flaw

:)

HD camcorders (at least at anything remotely close to a consumer level) did not exist in 1997.

Does anyone read threads before replying? You're all saying the same strange things over and over.

Who cares how many megapixels? I hope users will not shot photos with iPad like with their photocamera.

In my opinion it could have just a front camera for facetime. Facetime is the reason why iPad will have camera/s.

If that's the case why bother putting one in the ipad 2. such a low grade use less camera I wont use it anyway.

Some people like taking HD video. When did this stop being, not only a requested feature, but an actively despised one?

Also FaceTime, any video chatting, and augmented reality apps are apparently fairly popular and could use an HD camera (well, FaceTime doesn't do 720p, but still).

This is the second "rumor" that would be an Epic Fail for Apple in the last week. The first, of course, would be the removal of the home button on the iPhone.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; pt-pt) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

1Mp? You're kidding right? A device like this should have at least a 15Mp camera. And exposure/aperture controls, manual focus, ability to change ISO settings, etc, etc.

I *would pay* to see people taking pictures with this! (LOL?) :)

1MP video cam

Why does iPad need a rear camera?

The purpose of the rear camera is not to snap pictures, but for use with FaceTime as a video cam, so you can show the person you video conference with your surroundings. For that purpose, 1MP is sufficient.

A 1MP camera IS capable of HD capture. Remember, Apple's "HD" is usually only 720p, and 1MP is more than capable of that. The camera in the iPod touch is only 0.7MP, and it captures HD video.

Yes, my comment was in response to yet another user asking why anyone would bother putting an HD camera on an iPad. I was explaining that HD video has a number of popular uses.

A lot of people here seem really angry that people still take video in "only" HD. It's weird.

Geez, Jobs sure was right when he said that it's not the consumers job to know what they want.

Apple's "primary" use for a rear camera on an iPad will be most likely for Facetime. Not photography.

A 1MP camera, if that is what ends up being released, will be enough to do a full screen uninterpolated video chat on the current iPad resolution. Do you really think the iPad2 is going to double in resolution and hit the same price points? It sure would be great, but not likely this time around.

If you don't know what a rear facing camera is for, you've probably never used Facetime or seen the commercials for Facetime. If you have any sort of imagination, you can come up with at least a couple of circumstances in which the rear camera would be of use. I've used it on my iPhone more times than I can count.

Gotcha. My mistake.

There is hardly any substance to this rumor. Dozens of you are getting upset about a string of text that means nothing. Maybe it required a value and a label of "1MP" doesn't solidify ANYTHING except they're building in that functionality to be available to developers.

I personally hope the thing ships with no rear facing camera. Who gives a damn? It's a tablet and not a camera. If you want to take nice pictures, go buy a Canon or Nikon.

I've been saying the same thing since cameras made their way into cell phones. Cell phone camera are fine if you unexpectedly stumble across Big Foot or the Loch Ness monster. Otherwise, buy or use a "real" camera.

1)I never said it was a camcorder

2)My roommate bought a Coolpix camera back in late 1997. This it was about $900 back then. Don't quote me.

I may be off by a few months whether consumer digital cameras were introduced in late 1997 or early 1998. Sheeeeez.

Camera?

I just don't get it - I can't imagine using the iPad as a camera. Way too heavy for that.

I don't want to use it for Facetime either. Have you guys looked at yourselves on the front-facing camera on the iPhone? Unless you are 20 years old and have perfect skin, it's just not a good look...

I AM quoting you.....because you're right. They were that much when they first came out. I had to RENT a Coolpix 900 or 990 in the late 90's and it was $50 per day. Sure wasn't about to buy one at those prices.

You realize that recording video has a completely different set of requirements than taking a still, right? The iPad needs a back camera for an array of video-related purposes (FaceTime, in particular), probably not as a point-and-shoot still. Assuming this rumour is true, this is clearly Apple's stance, and frankly it makes sense.

I again assure you that your Coolpix could in no way be used to record HD video, like the iPad will. So the iPad is not using tech from 1997, as you stated.

This better be a joke..

I love Apple as much as, if not more than, anyone else. I'm able to "defend" just about every decision they make because it's usually a more intelligent decision if you look at all the factors, but this one is rubbing me the wrong way.

1 mega pixel? ONE? I know that megapixel ratings are given WAY more importance than they really deserve, and other factors like backlit sensors, optics, etc.. make superior pictures over a camera that JUST has a high megapixel count, but a 1 MP camera severely limits other capabilities of the iPad. First of all it means it won't have the resolution for augmented reality apps to look good, it makes bar scanning apps unreliable at best, (I remember my first gen iPhone was TERRIBLE at scanning bar codes) and most importantly it means that there's no CHANCE of a "Retina display". Pictures from a 1 MP camera would look TERRIBLE on a display with that kind of resolution. You need at LEAST 3 MP to even properly fill out 2048x1536.

As I've thought about what kind of camera they might put in the iPad 2, my conservative side has made me think they'll just continue with the same camera found in the iPhone 4. Pictures would look great on a potential Retina display and they could get a great deal on the parts because they use them in the incredibly popular iPhone. My hopeful side thinks they would put no less than an 8 MP camera that would probably go in the iPhone 5 as well. With a LOT of competition coming from HP with WebOS and Android with Honeycomb, both packing impressive hardware with great sounding specs, I figured Apple with just outright squash them with the iPad 2. They have unparalleled buying power knowing that the second iPad will be a guaranteed success, and the benefit of being able to see what the competition brings to the table, then one up that.

From all the news I've been reading lately it seems like all they care about is making the iPad thinner and lighter... The two factors I couldn't care less about them improving. The iPad is ALREADY incredibly thin, if it gets any thinner it'll just be more difficult to hold, and the weight makes it feel like a quality product, making it lighter will just make it feel cheap. With Gruber saying he doesn't think the Retina display is coming, and this report saying it'll have a 1 MP camera, I'm losing hope REALLY fast. So what if the graphics and processor are improved if you don't have a better display to take advantage of those improvements.
