I'll play Apple analyst.

Sources tell me that Apple will release a new iPad sometime this year or next year. They are also planning on updating the iPhone this year or next year and might or might not be introducing a new model of the iPhone. Apple might also release a new product they haven't released before. The only thing we can say for sure is that Apple already released products and probably will continue to do that.

Wasn't the "last year" rumor about an iPad 5 to be fulfilled in March 2013?

... OK, they have 3 more weeks. There isn't a flurry of production talk, yet. There aren't the accelerating rumors and leaked reports which predate a release. It's fairly uneventful, aside from this "April" rumor which is another stab in the dark.

If Apple has better processors and cameras and screens they should update as soon as possible to keep on top of the market. However, if they don't have anything substantial to update, why bother?

People need to be happy with what they got. I got an ipad mini 2 weeks. Don't care if they come out with a new. I'm not that rich that I can keep up with apple's refreshes very six months.

Ain't gonna happen..... It would mean that the iPad 5th gen and iPad mini 2 would have to be in mass production NOW, and we have have had little evidence of actual production.

This is just someones predictions based on a '6 month time period', not evidence of actual hardware availability.

Rene over at iMore has a little inside birdie at Apple. They've been right the past year or two every single time besides things that may have changed at last minute.

This lines up with what I posted previously except for the Mini which I think should be separate from the other ipad, meaning keeping the Mini for fall. Apple needs to shine a spotlight on its bigger ipad and focus better on marketing. The iphone won't release without iOS 7, which needs a few months of beta testing (typically most of summer). I still think a mere ipad mini spec bump (no retina) makes little sense in April. It's selling as fast as Apple can make them right now.

Keep in mind this isn't an indication that Apple is releasing twice a year. I wouldn't expect a bigger ipad (again) in fall. This is Apple readjusting.

Dear Apple.

if iOS 7 , and the quality of Mac OS doesn't return soon..doesn't reiterate what makes Apple Different from the rest of the companies.. then you are truly lost.

People cared about great hardware from you when they were in love with your software.

well, that love is dying. clearly apple's hardware divisions haven't fallen short since the dawn of Apple's great era.

but your software divisions are in huge need of focus and attention. you need to downgrade craig federghi to some lower level, as a provider of ideas. but you need someone like that bertland guy, to write Decent, reliable, and nearly bug proof Software.

It seems like Apple is mailing it in with the iPhone line. Kinda weird that I'm actually more interested in a Samsung product launch than anything I see on the iPhone horizon.

The bitter side of me wants the 5S to fail. Then maybe the yawn-inducing S models will be a thing of the past.

Because people on 2-year contracts (a good chunk of Apple's sales) need a completely redesigned phone every year?

The 5S news will surely drop AAPL shares into the $300 territory.

Because the phone needs to be reinvented every year. Something is seriously wrong with the world if a company's share price can tumble 40% off its highs because of the screen size of its phone.

----------

Surely the 5S will be a little more than just a processor and camera upgrade.

Well this rumor didn't mention anything about software....

Why even release a minor spec bump for the Mini, if Retina is slated?

I guess Apple feels the general consumer is not forward-looking enough to hold off their purchase until later in the year? But then, do they really think that these buyers won't feel shafted when the "true" upgrade comes 4-5 months after their purchase?

These are expensive devices, and they're not disposable. Whoever said "fragmentation" isn't off the mark -- soon we're going to have "only works on Gen 2 Mini or Gen 4 iPad, or higher, and only on Sundays" ...

No, you're right, it certainly doesn't need to be reinvented. But it's also not too much to expect that the most innovative company in the world can add a feature every two or three years that would make us go "wow cool".

iPad Mini...

Holding on to my iPad 1... But it has become way too slow and I use it more than I thought I would. Yet... Yet I like the Mini better, it suits my needs of portability much more and the weight/form factor is better for me. But, having bought the AppleTV 1st gen, the iPad 1st gen, I said: "no 1st gen this time around". And I'm glad I did. No retina display? No deal. So here I am, (im)patiently waiting for the new iPad Mini to be released. Will head to the Apple store the day it is released so I can finally say goodbye to my iPad 1 (which served me very well btw).

Ah, yes, I need to buy a new iPad.

Maybe Tim actually managed to "double down on security" this time.:D

Retina iPad mini ffs!
Also, looking at the prices of iPad mini, and iPod touch, (269 and 249 sterling) they need to drop the iPod touch by a lot! Since you can buy an iPad mini for just £20 more. Added iPad mini shoulda been retina from the start.

The introduction of the Retina screen was the last "wow cool" hardware deal... but then again, what else can they do now with hardware???

I think anything "wow cool" at this point will have to come from iOS or some add on product like the rumored iWatch.

I just got a 128GB LTE iPad 4 last week. I love it and since I upgraded from iPad 2 64GB 3G, it feels like a massive improvement for me. I also have no problem if Apple releases new models quicker. Twice a year would be ideal.

Oh my god. The sky is falling down. You realise that there are lots of people complaining about exactly the opposite? And what kind of mentality do people have who think they should buy another iPad just because Apple has released a new model? Grow up, people! You should buy a product if you feel that at the moment you buy it you will be better off having the product in your hand and the money gone from your pocket. If you buy an iPad every two years, what does it matter to you how many iPads Apple releases in the meantime?

Well, there's no need to be facetious pal. Sarcasm does not suit you. I've worried about things a lot more than the efforts of a cash-rich multi-billion international corporate (such as deaths, divorces, job losses, etc. - e.g. *life* stuff).

What you describe is what I do at the moment. My iPad 2 is perfectly fine and my MacBook Air is going to last me a good few years to come, likewise for my recent purchase of an iPhone 5 (although it suffered from a dodgy home button necessitating a replacement).

My point was that does the market really need a brand generation model at such a fast rate? There's innovation, and there's innovation. With such a rapid rate of new generation productions of the same line - where does the older stuff ultimately end up?

I'll answer that: it's a damn good job that Apple's entire product line has a good high resell value..

And as I say - with each new generation (at the rate things are being released) - what about quality control? If a fault is found at product launch - how long does it take for Apple to release a fix before then releasing the next generation? Repeat.

And I think you don't understand the meaning of "fragmentation". For Android device, people complain rightfully about fragmentation because there are plenty of devices with ancient Android versions, plenty of devices with similar Android versions behaving differently, and each device has a different screen resolution. Apple has kept all these differences hidden from developers. iPad 1 apps run fine on an iPad Mini.

Not in the sense *you've* defined fragmentation.
