I think it will be more important for enhancements on the software side vs. the hardware side. Many people think iOS is getting a little stale.

They could also release a larger screen that scales well resolution wise with the current 4"

Anyway, I'll just buy the next generation Nexus 7 (whatever it is), I don't care about iPads.

The bitter side of me wants the 5S to fail. Then maybe the yawn-inducing S models will be a thing of the past.

I am with you. The only reason I hope they release the 5S sooner rather than later is to get the 5 for $550.

With shorter refresh cycles - it will be interesting to see if Apple can maintain it's huge #s at launch of each or if their sales will be more spread out throughout the year.

Well...whenever they're ready to release the iPad mini with the retina display, I'll be getting the 32GB variant in black.

I hope that the iPad 5 is thinner than the previous gen devices. It should have a bump in the middle and very thin edges. That would be cool. So we could wobble the thing on the table and crumble sugar.

Unfortunately iOS isn't exactly lighting the world on fire either. Both hardware and software are feeling a bit dated
IMO.

What's dated about it???? Everyone keeps saying this, but yet I've seen no one really elaborate and say what needs to change?

Personally, I hope iOS does not turn into the ransom note approach of Android. I get lost in the mess every time I have to mess with an Android phone.

What exactly do people want hardware wise that they would consider an upgrade then?

There are still things that could be included that exist "now" (let alone what we don't know of the future). I am not advocating for any of the below - just listing

NFC
Tactile screen (which raises bumps or other things as needed)
waterproofed
pico projector

and so on...

*this* and hence my original point. Is it really worth releasing new generations this quickly? I don't think so.

Fingerprint sensor = I'll Buy

If the iPhone5s has a fingerprint sensor (to prevent unauthorized entry and to speed unlocking of the device by the owner) then I'll definitely buy it. I have so much important information on my phone now but it's a hassle to lock it down sufficiently (4-digit password has been shown to be easily hackable; longer passwords are a pain to enter often and can be read by snoopers).

An iPhone 5s with a fingerprint sensor would potentially solve a lot of those problems. You could give the phone a very secure password but not need to enter it unless the fingerprint sensor is broken or something. This would also set a standard in the phone industry for protecting your phone from theft. Apple's password lock is in need of an update considering all the Android ways to lock/unlock your phone. However, no mainstream Android phone has a great biometric lock. Once Apple releases it on the iPhone5s it'll be the new standard and we'll all be laughing at the silly/cumbersome locking mechanisms that other phones have.

If all the iPhone5s has is an improved camera (and no upgraded security) I'll just hang on to my iPhone 4s for another generation.

As the months proceed toward launch we'll see more threads on best guesses for product and a delivery date with a how likely they're right rating.

Should I reply to this one or wait for a later edition.

We could just cut and past the comments from thread to thread.

I think this is hilarious.

Let's not forget either that the Galaxy S IV is coming soon. A rumored feature sounds very interesting:

Why didn't Apple think of that? It sounds.. Apple-like and if Apple would have thought of that, iPhone users would be drooling over it and standing in line.

Because *SHOCK* - Samsung doesn't copy everything. They actually come up with stuff on their own. I know. Shocking.

No doubt Apple will wait and introduce their own version one day and everyone will say Apple's implementation is better, etc

And you'll be able to read the review of the iPad 5 just as well on it!

Stop your damn complaining, there are people without food out there.

Are there people out there, without food, who are on a Macrumors thread?

Why? I get a free phone every two years, why would you hold onto an old phone?

I usually get the 32gb version of the "number" phone, so the 4, 5 etc, and when the new ones come out, I easily sell my old one on CL for $300, which pays for the new one.

If I held onto the old phone for two cycles, my old phone would be worthless.

Who knows, but really, whining about buying a $500 computer that works fine because a new one is coming out sometime in the future is really childish.

I get what you're saying...I almost didn't upgrade my old 4th gen. 64Gb Touch for a new one, but the difference between the 2 is big.

Sure, I can see being annoyed, but dang, it's not like the old one stops working as soon as the new one comes out. If you feel a product is worth what you paid for it, it's not worthless to you the next day right? Let alone 3-4 months later.

Also, as someone pointed out, there is a dang buyers guide on this very site, if you are so worried about it, just only buy items in the "green" category.

It's just crazy how many people complain about Apple bringing out new products!

Because it's a gimmick that's not going to work well in real-life.

How many people are using Android's facial recognition to unlock their phones? Remember that feature? Remember how "innovative" it was?

....yeah, nobody's using it.

It might finally be getting time for me to get my first iPad. I just hope the new models are lighter, the minis are retina, and... that's actually all I care about. Specs on a tablet are pretty meaningless aside from weight, battery life, and screen.

If the mini is retina, and Apple can shave some ounces off the full sized, it's going to be a tough choice between the two, with lots of agonizing time comparing in an Apple Store after release.

Everyone around here anyway. Well, at least 95% of them will.
