If this is the case, I plan on waiting a year before upgrading.

Being on the "S" cycle is tremendously annoying. It'll be worth waiting a year to start getting a real upgrade every 2 years.

What really concerns me with Apple's potential accelerated product launches (on certain product lines) is the impact all these new models are having on the environment and that of the market. It's going to lead to a lot of fragmentation as clearly many people cannot afford just to go out and buy a brand new Apple device every single time a new generation is released.

And can a company really maintain a realistic quality control on these products at the same time?

Apple needs to slow down a bit before it starts getting messy.

Oh my god, the horror. Someone may be unable to afford an iPad 5 when it comes out and be stuck with their iPad 4. Quick, someone call Sally Struthers, we need to get a commercial on the air ASAP to encourage people to donate to help end this injustice in the world. I just hope Sarah McLachlan will let us use her tearjerker music in the background.

Because people on 2-year contracts (a good chunk of Apple's sales) need a completely redesigned phone every year?

Completely re-designed?

No.

But do something more than slap an "S" on the box and call it an "upgrade."

I'll debate your points without the sarcasm, thankyouverymuch.

lighter ipad

cant wait for the new ipad form factor in the full size version. Im hoping for a major decrease in weight like happened with the iphone 5s. I dont know why, but the ipad feels very heavy in my workbag!

It seems like people just look for reasons to complain at times.

This is so true.

Whenever I see an article, no matter how wonderful, I wonder how someone in the comment section will twist it into being awful.

Headline: 'Apple cures cancer'. Before hitting the comments link, I think up the ways... hmmm... 'Well, if Apple didn't spend so much time making iPads and iPhones, maybe they would have cured cancer years ago.' or 'Apple must have stolen this cancer saving technology from someone else, we know they're not creative', or 'Samsung's cancer cure will be better. Instead of saving 98% of people, it will save 98.1% of people. SOOOO much better'

The starts are aligning

I'll have my tax refund by then and my 4th Gen iPod Touch is on its last legs. If this comes to pass it will be perfect.

I predict:

1) iPad mini spec bump (non retina) using the A6 processor

2) iPad5 using the A7X processor

3) iPhone5S using the A7 processor

4) no more iPad2-- the iPad mini fills the entry-level role now

We're all human beings[*] for the love of .. whatever - complaining is what we do. There are ways of ignoring these comments and forums - a little self-discipline is required at times.

Yes, I'm a bloody hypocrite. I know.

shrugs

Am not upgrading my iPad mini for awhile* and probably won't bother with the iPhone until early next year at the very least. I refuse to fall into the trap of getting upset over quarterly revamps of new product.

* Yeah, I'm finally seeing the difference between retina and non-retina, but I can't go through constant upgrades and want to wait.

No, you're right, it certainly doesn't need to be reinvented. But it's also not too much to expect that the most innovative company in the world can add a feature every two or three years that would make us go "wow cool".

But that would come from software, no? Seems to me where Apple needs to step up is on the software side.

My approach is that an Apple PC has an average work life of around 2-3 years (3+ years it'll probably have depreciated to the point of not worth bothering with anymore - my four year old white MacBook can't run OS X Mountain Lion, it's battery life is awful, and I really should get it recycled somewhere - an SSD might revive it for a little while longer, but I don't honestly think it's worth bothering with). I expect to get at least 3 years life out of this Sandy Bridge full-fat iMac that was purchased by work early last year.

iPhones - around 2 years which is what you get with an average phone contract if it's subsidised. iPhone 4 had started to suffer from home button woes (becoming increasingly difficult to acknowledge presses) at the time of the 2nd year renewal.

iPads - again, around 2 years - possibly 3. Depends on what approach Apple takes with iOS development - but that same can be said about its PC products too (hence MacBook and OS X ML).

By my reckoning - given the *rumours* about possible new generation products, I'll have jumped two or three generations by the time I replace my MacBook Air and iMac, three or four generations by the time I replace my iPhone 5 and iPad.

Retina iPad mini ffs!
Also, looking at the prices of iPad mini, and iPod touch, (269 and 249 sterling) they need to drop the iPod touch by a lot! Since you can buy an iPad mini for just £20 more. Added iPad mini shoulda been retina from the start.

I bought the 5th gen. Touch (64Gb) for £330 because to me it represents much better value than the iPad Mini. No competition, really.

The introduction of the Retina screen was the last "wow cool" hardware deal... but then again, what else can they do now with hardware???

I think anything "wow cool" at this point will have to come from iOS or some add on product like the rumored iWatch.

Unfortunately iOS isn't exactly lighting the world on fire either. Both hardware and software are feeling a bit dated
IMO.

One way to convince me is to have 2 prices for iPad mini, retina and not retina. Then, 2 prices for regular iPad, all retina.

Because the iPhone doesn't have a 5" screen? What else is dated with the hardware? Certainly not the internals.
