I'm still rocking my original iPad. Haven't found any real need to update it. Based on my use case - added speed/memory isn't worth it. Only "worthwhile" feature for me would be the camera(s). But since my phone can do that - no rush.

Retina display? 4 times the speed? Lighter?

Let me guess, if Apple had added some "innovative" feature like "eye-scrolling" you would upgrade.....

Speed, display tech, battery life and design are pretty much the only ways smartphones/tablets upgrade these days.....gimmicky Samsung features don't count for me....neither do software features like Passbook that are available to older devices (or even ones that aren't like Siri).

This idea that phones need to be reinvented with innovative features every year is absurd.

The iPad 4 is a massive upgrade over the original iPad. If you don't feel that way, great - ultimately you use the device you feel works for your needs....but if the iPad 1 > iPad 4 isn't a substantial upgrade, I'm not aware of any recent tech (2010 - 2012) that provides a bigger upgrade.

That's only true if you ignore the fact that nearly everything about the design has changed in the last 3 years.

I guess for some people all design is, is how something looks asthetically. So even if the materials are different and the manufacturing process has changed if the device looks similar asthetically the assumption is the design hasn't changed.

curious to see how many people who did get the 5 will pony up and get the 5S
I most certainly will _Not_

I don't let contracts prevent me from upgrading at each new iPhones release, as I have enjoyed the fun of the experience. However now that Apple's likely move this year will be to continue to use its odd, narrow 4.0" display, I've lost all interest.

Once a nimble forward thinking _ and acting _ company, they've vascilated, shifting the focus to watches, and left the iPhone as an afterthought. Proven by their actions, as they attempt to cover that fact up with words.... spun to their advantage.

Blinded by Apples shiny image and influence, typical customers will believe every word Apple speaks and buy the not so ultra exciting iPhone 5S in vast numbers.

You seem to think I'm not upgrading because I don't think it's worthwhile. You've missed my point because I believe you're more concerned with trying to criticize me then understand what I actually said.

Let me make it clear though.

There are a lot of differences and improvements between the original iPad and the current iPad.

But FOR ME (my personal use case) none of these improvements really benefit me. Why? Because I use my iPad in a way that doesn't/wouldn't really benefit from greater speed. I'm fine with the resolution of this screen. Lighter isn't important to me at the moment.

I don't upgrade because - for me - there's little advantage. That's different (very) than saying there's no difference or the 1 to current iPad doesn't offer anything of value. I hope you understand the difference.

I never stated my use case was the normal. Or that anyone else would even have my use case.

I'll probably use my current iPad until it either dies, isn't supported by the apps I use or my use case changes. Not because I can't afford to get a new one. Not because the new ones don't have nice features or benefits. But I'm content with the iPad I have.

And no - I wouldn't upgrade for eye scrolling. Just like I wouldn't get a new phone just because of eye scrolling. I also wouldn't get the new iPhone just because of fingerprint tech. No one feature is the deciding factor for me.

Because it's a gimmick that's not going to work well in real-life.

How many people are using Android's facial recognition to unlock their phones? Remember that feature? Remember how "innovative" it was?

....yeah, nobody's using it.

I'll see how well Apple does making the iWatch not a "gimmick".

If there is no retina in the new mini in the coming months, they can kiss my a**!
Yet if the retina does comes into the mini, expect lines across the globe!!!

If that sucker goes retina I'm going to buy the hell out of it.

Design is indicative of function. When you don't change design, it's difficult to add new functions or abilities to a phone beyond changing the processor or changing the camera.

Thus, the only people happy with S-updates are spec-wankers who argue over benchmark scores and people who inexplicably want better quality for the photos they take and then compress to all hell when they upload to twitter.

Definitely, but even that reasoning is stretching the facts. It only looks "similar aesthetically" on one side. :)

If you read my entire post, you'd have seen I made this point. I apologize for assuming you were like the others who believe Samsung's gimmicks = big upgrades, while Apple's upgrades are worthless.

I'll play Apple analyst.

Sources tell me that Apple will release a new iPad sometime this year or next year. They are also planning on updating the iPhone this year or next year and might or might not be introducing a new model of the iPhone. Apple might also release a new product they haven't released before. The only thing we can say for sure is that Apple already released products and probably will continue to do that.

This is the new "Safari is snappier".

I don't think you thought that through.

What a silly, unconsidered generalization.

What really concerns me with Apple's potential accelerated product launches (on certain product lines)

Rumor. Might be better to hold your worries until it really happens.

And remember that they tend to drop products from product as new ones come out. When the iPhone 5s is live the iPhone 4 will be no more outside of service parts. The pad mini 1st gen could be dropped when the 2nd comes out. Certainly when the 3rd does. When the iPad 5 comes out either the 2 or 4 is good bye. When new model computers come out they EOL the old ones.

So there really isn't the market fragmentation we see in other companies.

And given that they keep tight control on iOS its not that hard to maintain the active models. Heck they even repurpose some parts in swapped phones etc to make new service units. Either the part as is or they strip off vital metals and toss those bits back in the fire to be melded into new parts

And I apologize. But it did sound like you were suggesting I was implying there aren't significant differences between iPads. I never suggested otherwise.

I just bought the mini on Sunday evening. Hopefully we hear some hard news if the retina mini is dropping next month or late this month, so I can return it and get the mini in all its retina glory!!!

The bitter side of me wants the 5S to fail. Then maybe the yawn-inducing S models will be a thing of the past.

I thought the same thing if not just to motivate Apple to release a solid model iPhone every year and not take the cheap route of just bumping up specs on everything? iOS needs to be super spectacular, otherwise I will stay on 6. I mean Scott Forstall last year thought that asking Siri for sports scores or making reservations was a great new feature? Really, I think this is the sort of thing that will put Apple in the hot seat. Also releasing multiple iPad versions in one year? Another reason I have not purchased a new iPad, just sold my iPad #1. I wanted the iPad Mini but not with a slower CPU and not retina?

I may just hang onto my IP5 until the 6 is out or until the iPhone has at least a 4.5" screen. I have the Note II and it is really nice as well, one other reason I have not sprung for an iPad Mini.

We will see what happens in the next few months, but after the 3GS and 4S I am done with the S model iPhones.

Faster processor and a better camera, so predictable. It'll probably be iPhone 4S users' turn to upgrade.

Having said that, I'm more interested in iOS 7 than what the new iPhone's hardware.

You know, I'd thought that for a while, but I honestly can't come up with a good reason to replace my 4S unless it breaks, god forbid. I love how it looks, and it does everything the 5 does. I even like the smaller screen for usability. I for one will wait to the 6. As you said, if that's when OS7 comes into its own, and we have a new case design, then I will upgrade.

I can't explain it, but I've found some odd sense of contentment with my iGear of late. I don't need to update anything. At best, I'll pick up a retina iPad mini when/if it shows up, but I don't own one of those yet. For the moment, everything "just works" as it were. No need to replace it.
