i don't understand this. It was just reported on the home page that AT&T has gotten a surge of new customers and tons of people with previous iphones who upgraded to the 3g. Apple will have to offer some incentive for the 3g iphone users as well. I don't see us getting a discount as high as the iphone 2g users, but maybe 100 dollars off of the unsubsidized price. If apple does not do this they will be losing lots of money. I know there are many people who want the coolest newest iphone and dont' care, but most people i know will not go get a new iphone if its just a better camera or faster processor. 3g speed was the big selling point, so i think with this one it should be also subsidized for 3g iphone users. Its not like the iphone will get any cheaper then what it is now subsidized, so no reason why someone would wait to buy the phone. u follow me.

what do you guys think the possibility is of introducing a 32gb iphone? It's possible with the touch, why hasn't it been brought down to the iphone? That's really the only thing that's held me back from getting an iphone, I want to be able to carry all my music...

You also have to remember that the iPhone has some extra hardware in it that the iPod Touch doesn't, namely the hardware that allows you to make phone calls, which isn't exactly tiny.

While I'm sure one day the iPhone will be able to have 32GB and even more I think its more of waiting for the memory to become small enough to fit into the phone.

In a firmware update for us older users not wanting to buy a new phone.
Your sig was my thoughts exactly, along with why do people move it to the front when their phone app is always on the bottom left, either way its to make the iPhone users not feel left out when they gave it to the touch users :p

MacRumors has discovered that Apple's iPhone 2.x Firmware has evidence of the next generation iPhone which has been designated "iPhone2,1".

Apple uses these models numbers to distinguish between different hardware models. The original iPhone carries the model number of "iPhone 1,1" while the 3G iPhone is labeled "iPhone 1,2". These numbers do not change for simple storage increases and instead represent functionally different devices. Similarly, the iPod Touch was originally introduced as the "iPod 1,1" and the most recent hardware revision was labeled "iPod2,1". The 2,1 iPod Touch added a speaker, volume controls, microphone support and a much faster processor than the 1st generation model. This new model number can be found in the USBDeviceConfiguration.plist in an unencrypted firmware.

Rumors of the next generation iPhone point to the support of Multi-Core CPUs and possibly Multi-Core GPUs from Imagination Technologies. Apple has been building a team of chip engineers over the past year to participate in their own ARM processor designs that will presumably be used in future iPhones. Schiller previously outlined Apple's natural product timelines and acknowledged that June is the usual timeframe for major iPhone revisions, although storage increases could happen at any time.

Strange. I am a developer since the App Store start and never viewed such a segmented report from Pinch Media. Even the iPhone is not divided in iPhone and iPhone 3g. Here is a snap of one of my Pinch Media reports. I am afraid the one posted showing 2,1 could be fake.

iPhone Nano

Well, if it is the iPhone Nano, Apple should get Robin Williams for the ad:

Voiceover: "Introducing the iPhone Nano."

Robin Williams: "Nano?"

Voiceover: "Nano."

Robin Williams (wearing suspenders, with iPhone to his ear): "Mork calling Orson... come in, Orson."

Meanwhile, at least one developer has noticed actual "iPhone2,1" models in use based on PinchMedia ad serving reports. (Other numbers blurred out).

Sorry if this was covered earlier, but couldn't this just be the much rumored iPhone nano? Would be a disappointment to me, but makes sense.

this has been anticipated for a while now where as the iphone nano was just wistful thinking... the iphone nano wouldnt make sense because it wouldnt be compatible with the app store

I want metal back back. With a black plastic apple for reception... Hott.

that sounds like it has some promise :D

maybe they offer different tiers of service?

and out of curiosity what apps do you develop?

I highly doubt its an iPhone nano, from what I have been hearing its roughly the same size though redesigned front and back

No it isn't, it too when used for example "there are too many rumors about the next iPhone"

No it isn't what? You used it in the exact same way as the previous poster. It is too both times.

Anyway, I'm definitely waiting for this. It is perfect timing for me. My Sprint contract is up at the end of May, I start my clinical rotations for medical school in the beginning of July where I will be using the iPhone as my PDA and definitely putting the new version of Epocrates Essentials on there that just came out last week.

why would they release a new iphone when a lot of the current iphone users are on contract therefore won't be able to upgrade until the end of the contract. In my case I'm on an 18 month contract so will have to wait many months later...

There are many other potential customers out there who has been holding off buying iPhone and many more potential markets that has not received iPhone yet.

So Apple does not need to care about current iPhone user basis as much still...

The required part is already in the market

While I'm sure one day the iPhone will be able to have 32GB and even more I think its more of waiting for the memory to become small enough to fit into the phone.

If my memory serves me right, Toshiba has been producing 32GB memory(whatever type I can't remember) since last november.
I think Apple is just waiting out for the supply line to become more stable. This will also entail 64GB iPod Touch(iPod Touch have two memory slots whereas iPhone only has one).

can someone please explain how apple would be making money with a new phone, unless they give all iphones users the option to upgrade at a cheaper price?

not saying as cheap as new customers, but cheaper than customers who are not eligible for an upgrade. SO many people have an iphone now that the prices went down so much. Steve said that this price was to stay it was the lowest price they could offer the phone at, so why would they raise it and for previous users who are now in the millions, what would be stopping them from getting the phone now.

We need to start an iphone "macro" rumor... 5 pounds, slide out full size qwerty keyboard. Cup holder, 5 batteries for 8 hours of uninterrupted standby time. 2mp camera (no video) and an 8gb hard drive. Comes with colorful strap for easy carry. That will put the iphone Nano rumors to rest. Hey if I pitch to Kevin Rose, then everyone will start believing. AHHHH

Yay! Now I have something to wait for. I just canceled my BlackBerry Storm because it was horrible compared to my iPod Touch, just waiting to get enough funds to sign a contract with ATT. It would be amazing if this new model turns out to be CDMA on Verizon! That would be sooo good, for me. Afterall, wasn't there just a rumor a few months ago that a Verizon iphone announcement could be made in '09?

Hmm ok I have been proven wrong, I didn't know they make the 32GB small enough, maybe it was just too expensive to implement immediately, aren't Apple and ATT subsidizing the price of the iPhone as it is?

Everyone has been talking about offers and upgrades for current iphone owners but I haven't seen any posts regarding new customers.

I am interested in buying an iPhone now but I'm not desperate for one. Does anyone know roughly when the new one will come out and any suggestions if I should wait or just buy a 3G now?

New iPhone new processor

After some digging around and trawling through the suppliers websites I came to the conclusion that the new iPhone is most likely to get a new main processor designed by PA Semi and graphics by Imagination blogged about it here
