What the hell are you talking about? WiFi is many times faster than Bluetooth, not to mention better on battery life (I think), is already set up for a home network in the hypothetical example, and has much better range (you could start syning when you walk in the door, not when and if you are in range for Bluetooth) Have you ever tried sending even ONE song over bluetooth? Let alone syncing 8-16GB worth?

Right.
Because Apple is known for testing the waters by using the fastest protocols immediately, right out of the gate... Like choosing....edge over 3G. o_O
Wifi's current throughput is only faster because it's expected to operate at longer ranges. This is precisely why Bluetooth radios are more efficient and consume less power.
As for speed, if apple were to implement Bluetooth 3.0, it would leave wifi-N in the dust.
Besides, BLuetooth radios CAN work at ranges that would allow you to sync when you walk in the door.
Now why you'de think it necessary to sync while standing across the street or halfway down the block with wifi..... ??

But what the hell I was really talking about was that bluetooth was implemented as a wireless replacement for cords, while wifi was created as a wireless replacement for conventional Ethernet networking. This in itself makes Bluetooth the logical choice for wireless syncing.

iPhone USB cable = cable
iPhone USB cable != Cat5 network

Upgrading from current contract (UK)

In the UK it will depend on what upgrade policy O2 adopt. I got the Edge iPhone in November 07 and upgraded to the 3G in July 08, just 9 months into the contract.

Google is your friend.

What are you talking about? First, I don't think this is an obvious answer at all. Second, YOU try to google "iPhone" and the numbers "1" and "2." See what comes up? Garbage.

I can see when the "google-it-nazis" come into a thread where someone is asking something like "where can I buy an ______?" or "how many people live in the state of Texas".... but your way off base. Thanks for your constructive comments though. Why do we even have a forum at all? Who needs conversation when we can all just google our answer? Mods, go ahead and shut macrumors down, we have google!

I can't believe I have to explain this again... -.-

4 words: WPA has been cracked.

I could stop right there, but I'll explain...

*brabra*

What a disgusting post. Thanks for wasting my time. For anybody into the matter it's obvious that you don't have a single clue. You have caught up some words that you think sound cool like "DNS poisoning" :D but have reached a depth of knowledge as having read about it in a gaming tabloid.

The only thing that has been cracked about WPA is that it's not immune against bruteforcing passphrases in PSK mode. When using short passphrases like "password1" WPA can be easily cracked. But as often in cryptography the complexity increases exponentially with any added digit, so for a password like "OIJf0(/)(§ibfeiwe(&Tkjfhsd98/)(ishsdifhkjsdfkjhFGD&§(§/)(FIJHVKHFDKD)F)(ZE" you would still need 100000s of years on a government supercomputer to break one access point, let alone a tiny 8-core Mac Pro, which can forget about it before even starting. Especially when disabling legacy WPA1/TKIP support, which no piece of Apple hardware choses by default, the risk of a security breach through WPA is exceptionally smaller than through other ways (like a burglar getting its hands on it). Most of Apple's products today take care that a very long passphrase is automatically set at setup time.

I dont want to hear this. I bought a 3g 16gb last week!!!!!!!!!!!! :mad::mad::mad::mad:

Sorry if this was covered earlier, but couldn't this just be the much rumored iPhone nano? Would be a disappointment to me, but makes sense.

Duh

Who expected that Apple would stop development of the iPhone after releasing the 3G? So what kind of news is this, if any at all? It could still be released tomorrow or in 1 1/2 years, no new information has really been leaked.

iPhone G3, Here we come!

I wonder how they're gonna handle the subsidy of iPhone 3G Customers who want the new one though...

Same way they handled first gen iPhone users, renew/extend the contract and give them the subsidized pricing.

oh hell yes. I'm glad I held on to my first gen when the 3G came out - now I'll get the new one subsidized.

Not exactly. The first gen iphone had no subsidy, so upgraders got the discount. But if you got your 3G subsidized, you won't be eligible to get the next iphone subsidized because you'll only be at about about 1 year (at most) on your contract.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.
All phone companies have to recoup the subsidised amount.

The 1st gen transition was different because the iPhone was bought unsubsidised so O2 or ATT didn't lose anything by offering early "upgrades".

Same here. :D Hopefully worth the wait.

9/13/2009 for me but 3/12/2010 for my wife and our 3G's were bought at the same time on day 1. Don't get it.

Upgrade eligibility is computed based on a variety of factors, including the profitability of your plan per line, etc.. I'm assuming yours is the primary line, and your wife's is one of the other family talk lines? If so, then the system would spit out an earlier upgrade date for your more profitable line than her less profitable one. I bought my iPhone 3G October of '08, and my upgrade eligibility date is showing October '09. Also, keep in mind that AT&T's OLAM screen occasionally displays dates that nobody (including those who set the dates of Jewish & Christian high holy days) can quite figure out.

Hopefully, Apple will see it fit to put in a haptic-response touchscreen that actually works and allow for typing out messages on the touchscreen in landscape display mode in the third-generation iPhone. Add these two and Apple will finally be able to compete against all those Blackberry and Palm Treo devices out there in the critical business market. :)

On my AT&T OLAM under "check upgrade eligibility" it says July 09". This is good news I guess. I bought my 3G on day 1.

Can anyone else confirm their upgrade elgibility?

Mine lists 12/23/09 and I too bought my phone on launch day (well the second day)

Did you use an upgrade to purchase the phone?

iPhone 4G... I didn't know AT&T was already rolling out their 4G network. We are still on EDGE (2G?) here in flyover country.

Unless they do something quite special, I'm happy with my 3g thanks.

remember this?

it is coming!

A phone with drastically more RAM and processing power could potentially keep the App Store working well and universal while also one-upping the Palm Pre, if it had the same general app specs but allowed the phone to run several apps at once. The original iPhone and iPhone 3G could be given background notifications but lack the true multitasking, and the App Store would still be universal. Everyone would be happy.

@Complie: Any chance you could translate a smidge? I haven't taken a course in Egyptian hieroglyphics in many many years. If you don't use it, you loose it.

It would be great if the new phone had some great new features, as well as the ones most of us have been craving for so long. It needs cut and paste, the ability to read and edit documents, etc . . . Of course we always want increases in areas such as processing speed, security and graphics management. One thing that would be really great though, would be if they decided to implement that video calling feature that people speculated about for so long prior to the release of the 3g model. Oh boy if the phone had all that and maybe more, my gosh. I hate to say it but I think I would be on board for another 2 years lol.:D :apple:

Boy am I glad Danish law only allows for 6 months contracts :) Bought a 3G when it came out and now i'm free as a bird :)

So for those of us who won't be eligible for an upgrade in June/July, will we still be able to upgrade by paying full price?? What will that price be?
