Clearly from the shadow on the white one, the round-rect is not flush with the surface, and is a hidden mounting detail.

Size of the home button is more interesting to me: small enough to keep nearly the current device height while fitting a rumored taller display—and still have symmetrical bezel sizes when held in landscape?

"Introducing the iPhone 5, with an all new, completely redesigned home button."
"Going home has never been so easy."
"We decided to match the innovation of Siri with our revolutionary new home button."

It's not an easy marketing angle, but I think Apple can handle it.

I do not have iPhone 4S but every time i use one i find that its quite inconvenient/time consuming to hold home button to activate Siri. And putting iPhone to an ear to activate it doesn't seem to work 100% of the time. I hope apple will come up with a better/faster way to activate it.

I'm in the Dallas, TX area - in a chinese marketplace (grocery store), they were selling fake iPhones (3G/3GS/4), and the home button white square is PAINTED on. Beware of these. There's no gloss over the white square part.

Also, how the **** is this newsworthy? What a waste of time.

Not a good idea. Have you used an Android phone with the touch buttons? They're unresponsive, easy to accidentally hit, and just don't work too well in practice.
What phones have you used? I have owned an android phone for several months, and never accidentally hit them even once. I think they work fine, and have also never seen any performance issues as you describe.

Not a good idea. Have you used an Android phone with the touch buttons? They're unresponsive, easy to accidentally hit, and just don't work too well in practice. The iHome button is a staple of the lineup and should stick around until some truly revolutionary replacement comes along through haptics or otherwise, but I think that is quite a ways away.

Anyway, this home button thing is fairly boring to me, I want to see hints of the new screen and enclosure!

I don't them unresponsive using ICS, but I do agree they can be easily manipulated. I've had situations where I've rotated the phone to landscape and it goes home because the side of my finger touched the home icon.

i cannot even put my hate for that little annoying thing in words, it needs to gooooo. broke on THREE iPhone 4 i owned. seems to work fine on my 4S so far, but its still annoying and waste of space

It doesn't need to go but there needs to be a extra button or something for the simple fact the home button has so many functions that it gets used excessively.

Shall we have a sweepstake on the number of messages that will be posted speculating what the next iPhone will look like based on the photo of a button?

My guess 150.

I was able to glimpse an iPhone 37 via a rent in the fabric of the space-time continuum.

Was that you? I was able to travel forward in time and help develop the iPhone 37, and then was instructed to come back to this time and start marketing it. While I was there I thought I saw an eyeball watching me. :D

"the new iPhone" duh

Thats wrong bro, it should be called "the unreleased new iPhone with iOS app-like squared home button"

In other news, the iPhone 6 is going to come with a screen. I can't reveal my sources, sorry.
