What a bull. MR should check their resources better. The button presented is in fact the iPhone 4s button, which was redesigned to prevent liquids entering the iPhone, a common problem, found in the iPhone 4,and 3. The square part is made of silicone rubber, which is taped to the backside of the touchscreen, creating a watertight seal. The old button presented is in fact the button used in the iPhone 4, and in the iPhone 3 series.

In the ifixit iPhone 4S teardown, they seem to have the rounded home button rather than this one )

At the front side you can't tell the difference. I repair iPhones for a living, and I an sure about my statement. The square silicone part is sticked at the backside of the touch panel.

Take a look at the picture in step 14, there you clearly see the back side of the panel with the square home button in place.

It looks to me like the home button will be back lit. That's why it needs a complete square holder to block out the light around the button and only have the home button icon lit up. When you look at the back view it seems to have a clear plastic where the icon is.
